RETURNING TO THE SCHOOL BUILDING:  We will not permit your child to re-enter the school building after 2:30 p.m. to retrieve forgotten items.  Please understand and support our effort to help your child learn responsibility.  Also, if there were to be a fire after school hours, we would not want your child to be unaccounted for in the building.  Only those students who are members of organizations meeting after school should remain in the building after 2:30.

PENN ALERT TESTING:  We will conduct two tests of the PENN Alert system next Tuesday, October 30.  (A PENN Alert is a voice notification provided by OLSH to inform you of an unscheduled school closing or early dismissal.)  The first test will be conducted at 11 a.m. and will be the call you would receive in the event of an unscheduled early dismissal.  The second test will take place at 8 p.m. and will be the call you would receive if school were to be canceled the following day due to inclement weather or other emergency.  Please advise the school office if you do not receive these two calls.  They will be made to the numbers you gave us on the “Emergency Plan for Early Dismissal” form sent in before the beginning of this school year.

SCHOOL UNIFORM:  Wednesday, October 31, will be the last day (until April 1) that students are allowed to wear shorts as part of the school uniform.  Beginning Thursday, November 1, all students must wear either long navy (grades K-8) or khaki (grades 7 and 8 only) pants or the school jumper (grades K-4), plaid skirt (grades 4, 5, and 6), or plaid skort (all grades).  Corduroy pants in the color appropriate for your child’s grade level may be worn but may not have studs on them.  Please refer to pages 26 and 27 of the Parent-Student Handbook for complete dress guidelines.

HALLOWEEN:  All students are reminded to bring in a costume into which they can easily change on Wednesday, October 31.  Remember, costumes must be in good taste—no gore, no violent themes, no blood, and no weapons.  No masks are allowed (for safety reasons), but makeup may be applied.  A parade will take place around the parking lot at 1:45 p.m.  (Pray for good weather.)  Please also remember to bring in a canned good for a “treat” for the poor.  Refer to the letter sent home on October 18, which explains the history of Halloween, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day.

PIE EVENTS:  Keep supporting our two separate pie events currently going on…

Pennies for Pies:  Keep sending in your pennies (or any form of currency) so that we can buy pies for our Student Government-sponsored Thanksgiving Food Drive.  Students can continue to drop their donations into their homeroom containers until they get full enough to dump into the large container in the school office.

Pie Selling Contest:  The eighth grade homerooms are committed to winning this contest so that they can enjoy their “just desserts” (the pie/ice cream party reward on November 20)!  They challenge their fellow OLSH students to beat them!  Let the pie (sales) fly!!!

BOO BAGS:  There are about 15 Boo Bags available for purchase ($2.25 each).  If you are interested, please email Lisa Schoenberger (schoenbergerl@olshschool.net).  First come, first served!

STOCKINGS FOR THE SOLDIERS:  All donations to these stockings must be turned in by this Monday, October 29.  Mrs. Finan (Mrs. Gorsuch’s mom) and members of other contributing organizations will be driving to West Virginia with all donations.   We thank you all for your support and are sure our soldiers appreciate your generosity.

ABITIBI:  Feed the Abitibi bin!  Anyone can put recyclable paper into this green bin located near the drive to the lower athletic fields.  Paper and newspaper can be put in, but please do not throw in cardboard or telephone books.  This is a fundraiser for our school!

MRSA:  MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is a bacterium which can cause a variety of infections commonly referred to as “staph” infections.  It’s been getting a lot of press lately because of its resistance to treatment with the usual antibiotics.    It affects the skin with pimples or boils (often mistaken for spider bites) that can be swollen, painful, and draining.  It is spread by direct person-to-person contact with an infected person or indirectly through shared personal articles (such as towels, razors, clothing, or athletic equipment).  It is not spread by coughing or sneezing.  Hand hygiene has been shown to be the most effective method of infection control for MRSA (as well as for the common cold and flu).  Several communities have been affected, but our school community is not one of them.  Please contact your doctor if you suspect you or your child may have this infection; he will tell you what you need to do if it is indeed MRSA.   We will inform our school community if we know of an occurrence here.

OLSH PARISH DIRECTORY:  Volunteers are needed to check in parishioners for their directory portrait sittings.  All volunteers will receive a $50 gift certificate toward the purchase of any portraits.  (Everyone who has a portrait taken will receive a free 8x10.)  Shifts needed are:  Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. ‘til 5:30 p.m. and from 5:30 p.m. ‘til 9 p.m. from October 29 through November 2.  No portrait sittings are scheduled for October 31, Halloween.  We need volunteers for these same times during the following week, November 5 through 9.  Shifts on Saturdays, November 3 and 10, are 10 a.m. ‘til noon, noon ‘til 2:30 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. ‘til 4 p.m.  Volunteers need work only one shift (one time period on one day) to receive their gift certificate.  Please contact Alison O’Neill (alisononeill@fuse.net) if you can help.
