FALL BOOK FAIR:  The Scholastic Book Fair will be open after all Masses this Saturday and Sunday, October 20 and 21, in the library.  Stop in and check out the holiday books, AR books, cookbooks, and much more!  Proceeds from this Fair will be used to support the school library program.

SCIENCE NIGHT:  Ms. Schafer’s fifth graders will have the opportunity to show off their science skills to second and third graders on Wednesday, October 24, from 7 p.m. ‘til 7:45 p.m. in the OLSH cafeteria.  Parents are welcome to come for a night filled with bursting bubbles, gooey goop, and flying eggs as students get a taste for exploring the world of science through hands-on activities.

LIBRARIAN POSITION:  We are pleased to announce that Heather Von Lehmden has been hired as our interim librarian.  Heather has been a dedicated volunteer in the library for six years.  Donating their time to work with Heather will be Jeanne Schoeny, Ann Hartke, and Terry Donovan.  Their goals are: to go through the books on the shelves to determine which need to be removed or replaced; to update and purchase AR (Accelerated Reader) books and tests; to sort through the books in storage; and to train and coordinate volunteers.  The hiring of an interim librarian was made possible through the use of PTO and Scrip funds.  We want to thank the PTO, Parish Council, and the Finance Commission for their support.  The possibility of hiring a librarian for next year will be considered when the 2008-2009 school budget is developed.  We want to also thank all those who volunteer their time in the library.  We couldn’t provide this service for our children without you!  Welcome, Heather!

SCHOOL DIRECTORIES:  Each family is receiving a 2007-2008 OLSH School Directory, coming home today with your youngest.  A big “thank you” to Gina Vonderhaar, Heather Von Lehmden, and Lisa Schoenberger for their work on this project.

MARKET DAY:  Thank you to everyone who helped OLSH to achieve our October goal.  As a result, the school library will receive $400 worth of books.  You make it all possible!  Thank you to all the adult volunteers who help with delivery and those who make the reminder calls.  Students who help at the sale are doing a fantastic job.  Everyone is much appreciated.  –Barb Adelmann, Patty High, and Wendy Schworer

November is Market Day Pie Month.  We will have two pie-related “activities” coming up.  One of these is “Pennies for Pies.”  We are having a penny collection (although other forms of currency are acceptable, too!) to see how many pies we as a school can purchase to donate for our Student Government Thanksgiving Food Drive (more information on this later).  Each classroom will have its own container where your child may drop in any donations beginning this Monday, October 22.  We will collect “pennies” until Wednesday, October 31.  Last year, we collected enough money to buy pies to help fill 30 Thanksgiving baskets.  Let’s do it again this year!  We are also conducting a pie-selling contest.  For details, please see pie order forms coming home with every student today.  The winning classroom will enjoy a pie and ice cream party on Tuesday, November 20.  Questions?  Call Lisa Schoenberger at 733-4707 or email her at schoenbergerl@olshschool.net.  Thanks for your continued support!

SERVER TRAINER NEEDED:  Parishioners Russ and Jerri Wernke have volunteered their time for many years to train new servers for all Masses and to schedule them for weekend, holyday, and holiday Masses.  Russ and Jerri are ready to pass on this important job and would like to find a volunteer to take it over by this December.  Please call the Parish Office at 733-4950 if you think you would like to serve your Parish in this way.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT HOMEROOM REPS:  Congratulations to the following newly elected homeroom representatives for Student Government:  Caroline Gallo and Jennifer Sutor (5-S), Caleb Von Lehmden (6-G), Chad Crable (6-O), Darcie Gorsuch (7-E), Hannah Kohne (7-M), Sam Wallander (8-H), and Kyle Gordon (8-S).  They will join recently elected eighth grade officers and will work with moderator Ms. Schafer on school- and community-related projects.

SCRIP VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:  We, the current chairpersons of the Scrip Gift Certificate program, are looking for three or four volunteers to take over management of this great fundraiser.  The responsibilities are:  maintaining the bank account and the inventory; recruiting and scheduling volunteers; and managing publicity.  The time commitment is small throughout the year—about one or two hours per month.  During the Christmas season, the time increases to about two to four hours per week.  It would be perfect to have folks in place before we start this Christmas season so that we could start training then.  We will continue to be available for training and consulting.  We have really enjoyed doing this important work; but after eight years and with our youngest children in high school, the program really needs someone who is in touch with what’s going on in the school as well as in the Parish (as half of the proceeds go to the Parish and the other half to the school’s library program).  If you are interested in volunteering  or want more information, please contact Sandy Champlin at 733-5235 or Lori Stroehlein at 984-9313.

YOUNG REMBRANDTS:  We are once again offering a Young Rembrandts drawing class here at OLSH after school (2:30 p.m. ‘til 3:30 p.m.) on Thursdays beginning November 15.  If you have a child from Kindergarten through Grade 5, please see the flyer coming home today.

SKATING PARTY:  Mark your calendars for an evening of fun at OLSH’s skating party to be held on November 8 from 6 p.m. ‘til 8 p.m. at Skatetown USA in West Chester.  This upcoming event is sponsored by PTO and is open only to OLSH families, not to the general public.  A flyer with further information will be included in the Friday, November 3, packet.

STOCKINGS FOR THE SOLDIERS:  Keep those items for the soldiers coming!  We will continue to collect through the month of October.  Thanks!

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL:  Grade 7 girls’ volleyball tryouts will be on Friday, November 2, from 5:30 p.m. ‘til 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, November 4, from 2 p.m. ‘til 4 p.m.  Open gym for Grade 4 will be on Monday, October 29, from 2:30 p.m. ‘til 4 p.m.  Open gym for Grade 6 will be on Monday, October 29, from 4 p.m. ‘til 5:30 p.m.  All other grades will have one team and will not need to be split.  Also, we are in need of Grade 4 and Grade 6 coaches.  If you would like to coach or know someone who would, please contact Laurie Hoffman at 733-9380.
