SPORTS ELIGIBILITY: Interims will be coming home with your children on Friday, October 5. Please refer to page 31 of the Parent-Student Handbook regarding grade requirements for sports eligibility. This policy will be strictly enforced, and we want you to be aware of it before interims come home so that there are no surprises.
ATTENTION, FAMILIES NEW TO OLSH: As a way to help families new to our school feel more comfortable in our community, a few years ago we established a Buddy Family program. The Buddy Family is your contact for answering any questions you might have throughout the school year. New families will find a note in this week’s Friday folder; this note will have your Buddy Family’s contact information. Welcome to OLSH—we are happy to have you and your children at our school!
PTO FALL FUNDRAISER RESULTS: We collected close to $31,000!!! Awesome job!!! Magazines accounted for 70% of the sales, and Kids Are First product sales provided the remaining 30%. Way to go! We have posted in each classroom lists of students who won the privilege of being out of uniform as well as those students who earned prizes to be given out on Awards Day (see below), participation in the Limo Lunch (7th and 8th graders only), and End-of-Sale prizes. We may have overlooked someone, so please contact us if your child tells you he is not listed and you feel he qualified for one of the awards. Out-of-uniform week is September 24 through the 28th for any student who sold $100 ($150 for the entire family). The Limo Lunch is scheduled for Wednesday, September 26. Awards Day events (Money Wheel, Chicken Run, Money Machine, and Cash Box) will take place on Thursday, September 27 at 1 p.m. in the Activity Center—parents are invited to come and watch. The homeroom that won the “Bragging Rights” trophy for the entire sale will be announced on Awards Day. PTO will host an ice cream social for the entire school on Friday, September 28, after lunch. End-of-Sale prizes and Kids Are First products will be delivered on Thursday, October 4. (Please arrange to pick up your child if you feel he would have trouble getting products/prizes home on the bus on that day.) Thanks for your wonderful support. –Nancy Sutor and Pam Kennedy
PLAYGROUND DUTY: Teachers who have playground duty for grades K through 3 have expressed a desire/need (!) to have an extra pair of hands and eyes during recess for those grades. If you have volunteered for lunchroom duty and you wouldn’t mind staying an extra half-hour after you’ve finished in the cafeteria, please consider helping out on the playground. Recess ends at approximately 12:40 p.m. Your time and help would be much appreciated!
SHADOWING: Eighth graders--if you are planning to shadow at area high schools, we encourage you to make use of upcoming “free” days for those visits. Contact the high school you plan to visit to make sure they will be in session on the day you plan to go. OLSH has no school on October 19—maybe that would be a good choice. High schools limit the number of visiting students they can accommodate on any given day, so plan ahead.
LIBRARY HELP NEEDED: Grade 5S could use volunteers to help out during their library time (Thursdays from 10:05 a.m. ‘til 10:35 a.m.). Please call Heather Von Lehmden (733-3337) if you’d like to volunteer your time. Thank you.
CCD HELP NEEDED: Julie Gorsuch, CCD Coordinator, is looking for a teacher for four-year-olds and for either 5th or 7th grade every Sunday. CCD starts back up this Sunday, September 23; so the need is urgent. Call Julie at 733-5853 if you can help out.
ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS: We will once again be selling Entertainment Books. Next Friday, September 28, each family will receive one book to review. See next week’s Newsletter for more details.
FLASH DRIVES: Every seventh and eighth grade student recently received a 256mb USB flash drive. Students are expected to bring these to EVERY computer class—Mrs. Gorsuch will check for them at the beginning of each class. USB flash drives are used in many of the area high schools; Mrs. Gorsuch feels that this is an excellent way to instill a sense of responsibility where these flash drives are concerned before the students enter high school. These flash drives are small and can easily be lost, left in pants pockets and sent through the wash, or eaten by the family dog. If a student loses his flash drive, he will have to purchase a new one at a cost of $7.
YAC WINTER SPORTS SIGNUPS: This is the last weekend to sign up your child for winter sports (girls’ volleyball and boys’ basketball). Signups will take place after all Masses in the Tiger Room of the Activity Center. NO REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED THROUGH THE SCHOOL OFFICE. Contact Ken Hoffman at 733-9380 if you have questions.
