WELCOME TO THE 2007-2008 SCHOOL YEAR!
OUR FIRST THREE DAYS HAVE GONE VERY SMOOTHLY.
WE THANK YOUR CHILDREN FOR THEIR BEHAVIOR IN THE CLASSROOM
DURING THESE EXTREMELY HOT DAYS.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO COOLER WEATHER NEXT WEEK
AND A GREAT YEAR WITH YOUR KIDS.
GOODBYE AND HELLO:
WE ARE OFF TO A GOOD START WITH A GREAT TEAM!
TRAFFIC PATTERN: By now, most of you have figured out the “drop-off” pattern of morning traffic. You may drop off your child as soon as you round the bend by the white statue of Mary and have reached the beginning of the sidewalk leading to the school entrance; this will make morning drop-off more efficient than if every car waited to get to the school entrance before discharging passengers. Please take care not to drive around cars in front of you in line if your child exits your car before you come to the entrance—students may be exiting their cars from both sides of the vehicle, and we want our kids to be safe. Stay in line after dropping your children off and continue with the line of traffic as you exit the school grounds. If your child is a car rider at dismissal, please pull into a marked parking space; children will come out of school and get in their cars before any traffic moves. As soon as the parking lot is clear of students, the teacher with parking lot dismissal duty will signal the cars to exit the lot in order. Again, do not attempt to pass another car or exit your parking space before you are given the signal to do so. By the time cars are ready to leave, the buses that are loading students in the one-lane cafeteria exit have started up Siebenthaler, clearing the way for cars to exit. Walkers will exit with a teacher from the church doors and will already have cleared the driveway crosswalk by the time vehicles reach that area. We feel we have a very orderly and safe dismissal traffic pattern—please help us to keep it that way!
MEET THE TEACHER NIGHT: Plan to join us for Meet the Teacher Night on Thursday, August 30, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Come first to the cafeteria to sign up as a volunteer for various PTO functions, view/order Spiritwear, talk with a Scrip representative, pick up items you may need from uniform exchange, and sample Market Day items. The parent meeting begins in church at 6:45 p.m., followed by three classroom sessions (7:20-7:40 p.m., 7:45-8:05 p.m., and 8:10-8:30 p.m.) You may return to the cafeteria after any session in case you missed anything before the parent meeting. We look forward to seeing all our parents on Thursday.
BOY SCOUTS: A representative from the Boy Scouts will visit with boys in grades 1 through 5 here at school on Wednesday, August 29, for about 15 minutes around lunchtime to introduce them to scouting. He will be here on Thursday, August 30, to meet with any interested parents of boys in those grades from 6 p.m. ‘til 6:30 p.m. (just before Meet the Teacher begins) in the Community Room.
NAMETAGS: All students are required to wear a nametag, which they put on in the morning and leave in their classroom overnight. Most of our returning students are wearing the nametags they turned in at the end of last school year. You will be notified next week if your child is missing his nametag. All new and replacement nametags are magnetic; the replacement cost is $5. (All new students have received their initial nametag at no cost.)
BLUE FOLDERS: Again this year, all students will bring home a blue folder every Friday. Please be sure to go through the information contained in this folder (which will always include this Newsletter) and send the blue folder back to school on Monday with any papers that need to be returned. If your child loses his blue folder, he will have to replace it at a cost of $1. We cannot guarantee that your child will receive weekly information on Fridays if we are missing his blue folder, so please be diligent about returning the folder on Mondays.
ABSENCE LINE: Please remember to use the absence line (852-9391) to call in your child’s absence or tardy. We ask that you make this call by 8 a.m. so that your child is accounted for as early as possible. When you call the absence line, leave the following information: your child’s name, homeroom, the reason for his absence/tardy, and with whom homework should be sent. (This child does not have to be in the same class or grade as your child—ideally, it would be a sibling or someone who lives close to you so that picking up homework is not a problem.) You may also opt to have homework sent to the office so that you can pick it up there. We are in the office (officially) until 3:30 p.m.; after that time, we can place your child’s work in the grey box to the left of the school entrance doors underneath the blue awning so that you can pick it up at your convenience that evening.
DEADLINES: If you would like us to put information in this newsletter, please bring or send it to the school office with your child no later than 9 a.m. on Thursday. You may also email it (thamannc@olshschool.net), also by 9 a.m. on Thursday. Moms will pack student’s take-home folders after the 8:15 a.m. Mass on Fridays, and this newsletter needs to be ready to go in those folders. Please have any fliers that you want to send home with the students in their Friday folders to the office by Thursday morning, also. Thank you for your cooperation.
VOLUNTEERS: We thank all of our parents who have volunteered for this school year. Please know that all volunteers must be fingerprinted and must watch the Child Protection Decree video. Fingerprinting can be done either at the Archdiocese of Cincinnati (100 E. 8th Street, on the corner of 8th and Walnut, across from the Public Library, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. ‘til 4 p.m.) or at St. John Church (9080 Cincinnati-Dayton Road in West Chester on Mondays and Tuesdays from 5 p.m. ‘til 7 p.m., Wednesdays from 10 a.m. ‘til 7 p.m., or Saturdays from 9 a.m. ‘til 11 a.m.). Please call the school office (733-5225) if you need to view the Child Protection Decree video, and we will set up a time when you can watch that here at school.
SPIRITWEAR: Please look for Spiritwear order forms coming home with your youngest today. All orders and money are due by next Friday, August 31. Make your check payable to “OLSH YAC” and send orders to the school office in an envelope marked “Spiritwear”. Items will be delivered to your child’s homeroom in four to six weeks. SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT SPIRITWEAR ITEMS ORDERED IN MAY…Some of the Spiritwear items ordered in May were delivered to homerooms this past week. However, the majority of the items will not be delivered until late next week. This was an unusually large order, and it is taking some time to verify that all of the items are correct. If you have any questions, please call Laura Benson at 984-6984.
MARKET DAY: Look for Market Day order forms coming home today. All orders must be returned to church by September 2 or to the school office by September 6; or order online by Friday, September 7. Pick up your order in the OLSH cafeteria on Wednesday, September 12, between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m.
