WHY WE PRACTICE FIRE DRILLS:  This past Tuesday, we had the opportunity to test what our students have learned during our monthly fire drills.  Mrs. Gallenstein noticed a smoky odor on her way down the hall.  The decision was quickly made to evacuate all students to the gym.  We called the Reading Fire Department; five firefighters responded within minutes and determined that a compressor in a drinking fountain was malfunctioning.  A firefighter unplugged the fountain, which took care of the problem until Mr. Moeggenberg can replace the compressor.  We are extremely proud of the way our students handled themselves during this “drill”; classes resumed within 30 minutes as if nothing had happened.  We credit our teachers and staff, students, and the Reading Fire Department for their calm reaction to this incident.

JUNIOR CUSTODIANS:  Kudos to our staff and students for their efficient work at dismissal in emptying classroom trash cans and sweeping out classrooms and hallways in an effort to lessen the workload of Mr. Bob Moeggenberg, who is serving on jury duty for three weeks, and in the absence of Mr. Mueller, who is recuperating from knee surgery!  Mr. Moeggenberg stops in every evening to clean bathrooms, attend to repairs that need immediate attention, check that the building is secure, and who knows what else to keep OLSH up and running and to ensure a clean and safe environment for our students.  Bob is a treasure that we are lucky to have at OLSH, and we appreciate what the students are doing to help him out.

MEMORIAL DAY ESSAY CONTEST:  We congratulate eighth graders Daniel Gates and Abbie Dial, who were winners in the Memorial Day Essay Contest sponsored by the Halker-Flege American Legion Post #69 in Reading.  These students’ essays were chosen from among those submitted by OLSH and other Reading area schools.  Daniel was awarded a Gold Medal; he will have the honor of reading his essay at the Memorial Day service at the Reading cemetery on Monday, May 26, at 10 a.m.  Abbie’s essay earned her a Bronze Medal.

GRAND RAFFLE TICKET SALES CONTEST:  Wow!  Thanks to all of your hard work, OLSH students will enjoy an out-of-uniform day on Tuesday, May 27.  (Please see page 28 of the Parent Student Handbook for appropriate out-of-uniform dress guidelines.)  Ice cream will be served at lunchtime as well.  We have reached two of our goals and are only $1000 away from earning a movie day.  Thanks to all of the families who have supported the raffle.  Your help is critical for a successful festival.  If you haven’t turned in your tickets yet, please consider doing so.  We have extended the deadline to Tuesday, May 27.  The holiday weekend is a perfect time to sell tickets to friends and relatives!

RELIGION PLAY/MUSICAL:  Join us on Tuesday, May 27, as our fifth graders present a religious play and students in grades K through 3 provide us with a musical performance, all under the direction of Music teacher Mrs. Cheryl Raine.  Both will take place in the Activity Center at 1 p.m.

HIGH SCHOOL DECISIONS:  Parents of eighth graders—don’t forget to email Lisa Schoenberger at schoenbergerl@olshschool.net or call the school office (733-5225) before graduation next Thursday, May 29, to advise us which high school your child will attend next fall.  We need to know your final decision.  Thank you.

EARLY DISMISSAL:  We will have early dismissal (11 a.m.) on the last day of school—Tuesday, June 3.  The following school districts WILL provide transportation home on that day:  First Student, Princeton, and Sycamore.  If your child normally rides home on a Kings, Lakota, or Mason bus, you must find alternate transportation home for him on June 3, as these three districts are unable to have buses pick our students up at that early dismissal time.

MARCH MADNESS AT OLSH:  Instead of filling out basketball brackets this past March, we filled in our brackets with the names of fourth, fifth, and sixth graders who participated in a chess tournament.  The students have been playing chess during recess on Thursdays in the Learning Center since January.  We finished out the season with a chess tournament.  The “final four” included Kelsey Eagan/Sam Sieder and Patrick Guye/Matthew Hildebrandt.  The semifinals included Sam and Patrick.  The chess master is Sam!  On Thursday, May 8, Sam played and defeated Fr. Ron!  Congratulations to all!

SPIRITWEAR:  Please look for Spiritwear order forms coming home today.  All orders and money are due by next Friday, May 30.  Make your check payable to “OLSH YAC” and send orders to the office in an envelope marked “Spiritwear.”  Parents, please check to see what items your child will need to begin the school year next August.  If items are needed, your order must be placed now.  All orders will be placed over the summer, and delivery will be made to your child’s homeroom sometime during the first week of school.  If you have questions, please call Laura Benson at 984-6984.

SUMMER FUN:  Mrs. Baker and former teacher Mrs. Rohlfs will again be holding two very fun and popular classes this summer as part of Summer Readology—Busy As Bees.  If you have a child who will be in Kindergarten through fourth grade next fall, see the flyer coming home today with details about this program.

MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL:  Please arrange to come in to the school office between now and Tuesday, June 3, to pick up any medications your child may have at school.  We will not send meds home with students; any medication left here after June 3 will be disposed of.  Contact the school office (733-5225) if you are unsure if your child has medicine here.

PTO FUNDRAISER:  We need only eight more towels to reach our goal of 100 and earn a $100 bonus from J&R Fundraising.  Please send in your dingy white kitchen towels to the school office.

MARKET DAY:  Market Day orders are coming home early to give all families the opportunity to stock up for the summer.  You may send orders back to school until the last day, June 3.  Thank you for all your support for Market Day this year from Patty High, Wendy Schworer, and me.  New chairs will be taking over Market Day for the 2008-2009 school year.  Thanks to them for volunteering to continue this wonderful fundraiser.  ~Barb Adelmann

ATTENTION, BAKERS!  The Festival Bakery Booth is in need of yummy, tempting baked goods for our pure-profit booth.  Along with the bottled pop and water, the Bakery Booth will be located under the large dining tent near the grill.  We are asking bakers to bring their creations during set-up on Friday morning, June 20, or before their shifts begin on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday of that weekend.  We need individually wrapped treats and whole desserts to sell.  If you are short on time, bring your treat whole--we will cut and wrap it for you.  Thanks for your help!  Contact Ann Falci at 793-4431 with questions.

LESSONS OFFERED:  Mr. Michael Collins will be offering piano lessons after school during the 2008-2009 school year and is willing to begin lessons over the summer.  If you are interested, please contact Mr. Collins through the church office (733-4950) or via email at mcollins9@fuse.net
