FIRST COMMUNION:  We congratulate our second graders and those in our CCD Program who will make their First Communion this Sunday.  Mrs. Baker, CCD instructor Mrs. Gorsuch, and the students have worked hard to get ready for this big day.  We want them to know that they will be in our prayers as they receive this sacrament on Sunday.  PLEASE NOTE THAT THE SECOND GRADERS WILL NOT BE IN SCHOOL ON MONDAY, APRIL 28.

SPRING PORTRAITS:  Today your child will be bringing home his/her spring portrait.  Portrait packages have been printed only for students photographed on April 10—there are no retakes for spring pictures.  If you do not want the pictures, please return them to school immediately.  If you wish to buy all or part of your package, see the instructions included in the package.  Please return all unwanted pictures and/or money by Monday, May 5.  We appreciate your cooperation.

COSI:   Thank you to all the parents who have volunteered to be here to help out when COSI on Wheels visits OLSH with its “Launch into Space” program next Wednesday, April 30.  We are still in desperate need of additional volunteers either all day or (especially) for the afternoon shift from noon ‘til 2:30 p.m.  We cannot have this program presented unless we get a sufficient number of volunteers.  We’d really hate to cancel it at this point.  Please contact Alison O’Neill at alisononeill@fuse.net to help us out.

MAY CROWNING:  Plan to be with us as we honor Mary at May Crowning next Friday, May 2, immediately following the 8:15 a.m. all-school Mass.  Eighth graders Katie Rieman and Daniel Gates will form Mary’s May Crowning Court, with Daniel carrying the crown and Katie crowning Mary.  The ceremony will take place at the Mary statue outside; if the weather does not cooperate, Katie will crown the statue of Mary that is inside church.  We are asking all students to bring flowers from home into school that morning.  These will be arranged into homeroom bouquets and placed by Mary before she is crowned.  If you would like to come into school before Mass and help arrange these homeroom bouquets, we’d love to have you be a part of May Crowning in that way.   Please let the school office know if you can help out.  All are invited to both the Mass and the May Crowning ceremony.

FIRST GRADE TESTING:  Mrs. Nikki Cromer will be administering the School Readiness Test to all current Kindergarten students (both from OLSH and those who currently attend Kindergarten at other schools but who are registered for first grade here for 2008-2009) the morning of Friday, May 2, from 9:30 a.m. ‘til 11:30 a.m.  The testing takes approximately 90 minutes; the children will be given a break and a snack during the testing time.  OLSH Kindergartners will report to school as usual and will be dismissed at the regular time, just like on a regular school day.

CHILD PROTECTION DECREE VIDEO VIEWING:  If you were unable to come to OLSH on Thursday, April 24, to view the Child Protection Decree Video when Dan Hackett was here to facilitate that viewing, please check the Archdiocesan website—www.catholiccincinnati.org—to see other locations where you can fulfill the requirement of viewing this video in order to continue to volunteer at OLSH.

STUDENT GARDENERS NEEDED:  We are looking for student volunteers willing to stay after school on Tuesdays and/or Wednesdays from 2:30 p.m. ‘til 4 p.m. to rejuvenate the courtyard and flowerbed area outside the church/school building.  Mr. Gene Rihm, a parishioner, has offered to assist and direct the students.  Supervision will be provided.  Current seventh graders may use this time to count toward their Confirmation service hours.  Please call the school office if your child is interested in this volunteer activity.

PTO PUBLISHING CENTER:  Handmade books created by OLSH students will be on display next Friday, May 2, in the cafeteria as soon as the area is cleaned up from lunch (approximately 1 p.m.) until the end of the school day (2:30 p.m.) and also on Saturday, May 3, and Sunday, May 4, (still in the cafeteria) after all Masses.  Funded by the PTO, each book project is coordinated with teachers to reflect a part of the curriculum.  Covers are created in Art class.  Some books are handwritten, and others are produced in Computer class.  Parent volunteers prepare the materials and assist the students in binding their books.  Please stop by and see what our kids have been creating.

POSITION OPEN:  PTO is looking for a volunteer to chair the Christmas Shop for 2008-2009.  Please contact Katie Leary (563-0370) if you would like to fill this position.

CHAIR NEEDED:  PTO is also looking for someone to chair the Market Day fundraiser for the 2008-2009 school year.  This requires very little work per month but brings in lots of income for PTO.  Please contact Katie Leary to volunteer for this position, also.

PTO FUNDRAISER:  We still need 34 dingy white towels to reach a total of 100 donated, which will entitle us to a $100 bonus.  Send them in to the school office.

OLSH PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE:  Do you have great news to share about the achievements of OLSH grads?  The OLSH PTO Public Relations Committee is working to maintain the alumni bulletin board in the junior high wing.  Please assist us in collecting news of our OLSH graduates.  Send newspaper clippings of awards, scholarships, promotions, etc. to the school office or send them to Ann Falci (c/o Emma in 1-P) or Yvonne France (c/o Caroline in K).  We can also be reached at annfalci@yahoo.com or eyfrance@fuse.net

OLSH YARD SIGNS:  If you have a yard sign advertising OLSH, we’d like to get those back so that we can re-use them next year.  Please bring them to the office or call us (733-5225) for pickup if your child rides the bus to school (as the “step stakes” are too dangerous to be carried on the bus).

SUA VOLLEYBALL CLINIC:  St. Ursula Academy is offering volleyball clinics June 9, 10, and 11, on their school campus.  Students who will be in grades 3 through 6 in 2008-2009 will have clinic from 9 a.m. ‘til noon; students who will be in grades 7 through 9 in 2008-2009 will have clinic from 12:30 p.m. ‘til 3:30 p.m. on those days.  The cost of $110 includes a long-sleeved t-shirt.  For more information, call Julie Perry at 961-3410, ext. 164 or pull up camp information by going to St. Ursula Academy’s website—www.saintursula.org—and clicking on “Athletics”, “Team Information”, Volleyball”, then “Camp Information.”

READING CLEANUP DAY:  Don’t forget that this Saturday, April 26, (from 10 a.m. ‘til noon) is the City of Reading Litter Cleanup Day.  Please call 842-1677 for additional information.

CITY OF READING COMMUNITY POOL SIGNUPS:  If you are a City of Reading resident or if you are employed in the City of Reading, you may sign up to be a member of the Reading Community Pool.  Signups will take place the first three Saturdays in May (May 3, 10, and 17) at Haffey Fieldhouse.  Please call the City of Reading Recreation Department at 842-1677 for additional information.
