2008-2009 SCHOOL CALENDAR: We are sending home today an abbreviated school calendar for 2008-2009. You will receive a more detailed calendar at a later date, but this will let you plan for the start and end dates as well as breaks scheduled during the school year.
SCHOOL UNIFORM: Tuesday, April 1, is the first day OLSH students may wear shorts as part of their school uniform. Please make sure that your child’s (especially the girls’) shorts are the appropriate (fingertip) length. Refer to pages 26 and 27 of the Parent Student Handbook for further uniform regulations. The Easter break would be a good time to make sure your children’s uniform clothing is in good repair.
SERVICE HOURS: Don’t forget to turn in your service hours being done in honor of Pope Benedict. Details were included in a letter sent home in last week’s Friday folders.
LENTEN RAFFLE: The winners of the last Lenten raffle items were: Matthew Hildebrandt (4-T)—Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium DVD and candy; Kory Boothe (5-S)—Easter decorations; Luke Mitsch (3-P)—chocolate bunny; Kristen Elmlinger (3-P)—craft basket; and Elisabeth Orr (1-P), Maria Spaeth (1-P), Kamryn Vonderhaar (1-P), Kristen Elmlinger (3-P), Brett Elmlinger (4-T), Dan Vidourek (5-S), Michelle Niesen (6-G), Grace Rohs (6-O), Ryan Boothe (7-M), and Molly Ernstes (7-M)—out-of-uniform passes. We thank all teachers and staff who donated raffle items and all our students (and parents) who donated to our raffles and our homeroom Nica jars. All the money we have raised will go to the Batahola Mission in Nicaragua. We will let you know the grand total of our donation when we return from Easter break.
FISH FRY UPDATE: Thank you to all the people who volunteered, attended, or baked desserts for the Fish Fry Fridays. Without your help, we could not have been successful. We had a terrific crowd last Friday and wish to thank everyone who supported us. When final profit numbers are available, we will let you know our total donation.
JOIN THE PTO BOARD: We are currently looking for candidates for the PTO Board positions (President, Vice-President, Treasurer, and Secretary). Please consider joining this team of parents who work with the PTO membership to ensure the success of the fundraisers that support educational programs for our children and teachers. If you are interested in any of these positions, please contact Alison O’Neill at 769-4853. Election of new officers will occur at the April PTO meeting.
OPENING DAY PARADE: Tune in for the Cincinnati Reds Opening Day Parade on Monday, March 31, at 11 a.m. being broadcast on Channel 5. Our fourth graders will be marching in the parade thanks to a winning essay on “What Opening Day Means to Me” submitted to The Cincinnati Enquirer by Patrick Guye. Patrick interviewed an elderly doctor who shared with him his memories of all the Reds Opening Days he had attended. This contest was open to all fourth-grade students in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana; Patrick was the overall winner. Congratulations, Patrick!
SPRING PICTURES: Spring pictures will be taken on Thursday, April 10. Look for a flyer coming home today with your child. Students may be out of uniform on Picture Day—please refer to page 28 of the Parent Student Handbook for guidelines concerning appropriate dress. All students in attendance on Thursday, April 10 will be photographed and will have a portrait package printed; you can decide when you receive your child’s pictures whether or not you want to buy them and can fill out the order form that will come home with the pictures. You are not obligated to buy—if you decide you don’t want them, you just return the portrait package to the school office. We will need two parents here on Picture Day to help with the flow of classes. The photographer starts at 8 a.m. and is usually finished before noon, so we would need any volunteers to be here at 7:45 a.m. and stay until all pictures have been taken. Please call the school office (733-5225) if you’d like to help out. Thank you.
VARIETY SHOW T-SHIRTS: Order forms to purchase OLSH Variety Show t-shirts are coming home today. T-shirts are available for $7.50 each; checks should be made out to OLSH PTO. Orders must be returned by Friday, April 4. Contact Alison O’Neill at alisononeill@fuse.net with any questions.
SUMMER CAMP: Blue Ash is holding “Laffalot” Summer Camp in June. Flyers are coming home today with students in grades 1 through 3; the camp is open to children through grade 6. Please visit www.laffalotcamps.com for more information and online registration.
MND DANCE TEAM: Do you want to dance on the best dance team in Ohio? Current sixth, seventh, and eighth graders are invited to open practices and tryouts for the State Champions Mount Notre Dame Junior Varsity and Varsity Dance Teams. Practices and tryouts will take place in April; a Dance Team Clinic will be held on Saturday, April 19 in the MND gym. Visit their website at www.MNDDance.com and click on the “Tryouts” button for additional information.
