AWARDS:  Congratulations to seventh grader Andrew Riordan and fourth grader Sydney Zeuch, who won the Grand Prize and Second Place recognition respectively for the posters they made for the Turkey Bowl in November.  Both students received a cash prize and a ribbon for their artwork.  This competition was sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and was open to all students in grades K through 8 at OLSH and St. Nicholas Academy, friendly rivals in the annual Thanksgiving Day Turkey Bowl football game.

GEOGRAPHY SCHOLAR:  Congratulations to eighth grader James Stall, who is the winner of the OLSH edition of the National Geographic Geography Bee held this past week.  James won over 9 homeroom competitors in grades 4 through 8 in the championship round and so will represent OLSH in the written Geography exam, which he completed and mailed on Thursday.  We’ll let you know how James did when we get the update from National Geographic.

PTO NEWS:  Please remember to submit any newsworthy items to the PTO Newsletter for publication.  We know there are good things going on, but we don’t always see or hear about them!  Pictures are especially appreciated.  Send notes/articles/pictures/ideas to Katie Leary at Katie.Leary@fuse.net or to Tamara Anderson at tanderson1@cinci.rr.com.  (Tamara’s email address was incorrectly listed in last week’s Newsletter.)

SPIRITWEAR:  Please look for Spiritwear order forms coming home today.  All orders and money are due by next Friday, January 25.  Make your check payable to “OLSH YAC” and send orders to the school office in an envelope marked “Spiritwear.”  Items will be delivered to your child’s homeroom in four to six weeks.

OLSH NIGHT:  Thanks to all of the students and parents who participated in the first annual OLSH Nights at the boys’ basketball tournament.  Initial feedback has been very positive, so we anticipate doing this again next year.  We’re asking for your participation one more time—if anyone took digital photos of either night, please let me know; and I will be working on getting those posted on the tournament web page.  We also welcome any feedback/ ideas on how to make this event even more successful next year.  –Mike Benson (phone: 984-6984 or email: irish317@fuse.net)

YAC:  Spring sports signups will take place after all Masses this weekend (January 19/20).  Registrations will take place in the Tiger Room of the Activity Center for the following sports:  boys’ baseball (grades 3 through 8); girls’ softball (grades 3 through 8); boys’ volleyball (grades 3 through 8); boys’ and girls’ soccer (grades K through 7, or ages 4 through 13); and boys’ and girls’ CYO track (grades 7 and 8).  Early registration for Golden Bears football (fall of ’08 season) will also take place for boys who will be in grades 3 through 8 in the fall of 2008.  Registration forms were sent home in last Friday’s packet and are available at www.olshschool.net under Athletics and Programs.  For more information, please contact Ken Hoffman at kdhoffman@fuse.net or phone him at 733-9380.

FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE:  Our school nurse will be conducting the postural screening program for OLSH students in grades 5 through 8 on Thursday, February 14, 2008.  Students in those grades are bringing home today a letter from Mrs. Barbara Buckley, R.N. explaining the process and need for this screening.

SPECIAL OFFER:  The Newport Aquarium is sponsoring a “Faith Weekend” on March 1 and 2, 2008.  The special ticket price of $9.95 is being offered to all Church members and their family and friends.  Please contact the school office if you would like to have an order form sent home with your child.  Orders must be placed before February 25.
