CONDOLENCES: Please join the OLSH Faculty and Staff in sending prayers to Mrs. Suzanne Fairbanks, our Reading Specialist, whose father passed away the morning of Thursday, January 10.
IN APPRECIATION: Thank you to the parents and children for all the Christmas gifts and cards. A special thank you to the OLSH PTO for all they did to enhance the joy of the season—the Christmas goodies, Santa’s visit, the candy canes and ice cream treats. May you and your families have a Blessed New Year! --Ms. Jo Anne Fischesser
TERRA NOVA RESULTS: Many of you are asking about the results of the Terra Nova tests (standardized tests given in October to students in grades 2, 4, 6, and 8). We have not yet received the Parent Reports. We will send them home as soon as they arrive.
REGISTRATION: Registration for the 2008-2009 school year will be held from January 27 through February 8 for currently enrolled families. Forms will be sent home on Friday, January 25. Note: Next year, half-day and full-day Kindergarten options will be offered. Details (such as half-day dismissal time and tuition) are still being worked out. Stay tuned…
OLSH IN THE NEWS: Hope you caught the front-page picture in the Catholic Telegraph over the Christmas break. Archbishop Pilarcyk was photographed holding cards made by our students! Thanks to all of you who worked on these notes of appreciation for the Archbishop and to Ms. Schafer and her class for the creative card holder.
SERVICE: Parishioner Ted Gramann would like to thank the following eighth graders who helped pack Christmas baskets at the Halker-Flege American Legion Post for needy area families: Abbie Dial, Patrick Goddard, Jenna Kalthoff, Danielle Mitsch, and Katie Rieman.
SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE: The Knights of St. John are offering a scholarship opportunity for current eighth graders to be used for their high school education. Parents of eighth graders, please check with your child for this application form coming home today.
PTO PANCAKE BREAKFAST: Is your family ready for some yummy pancakes? Make plans to fill their tummies after both Masses on January 27. Both the Open House and the Pancake Breakfast will take place following the 8:30 a.m. Mass ‘til 12:30 p.m. on that day. Save some money—make reservations for the Pancake Breakfast early. The discounted pre-sale prices are: $5 for adults and kids 5 and older or $20 per household. Children 4 and under are free. At-the-door prices are: $6 for adults and kids 5 and older or $24 per household. (Children 4 and under are still free!) This offer is good until Saturday, January 26. See the flyer coming home today. Contact Susie Finan (769-5980) or Katie Leary (563-0370) with questions.
PTO NEWSLETTER: Teachers and parents—please remember to submit any newsworthy items to the PTO for publication. We know there are good things going on out there, but we don’t always see or hear about them! Pictures are especially appreciated. Send notes/articles/pictures or even ideas to Katie Leary (Katie.Leary@fuse.net) or to Tamara Anderson (tanderson@cinci.rr.com). Thanks!
HOOPS FOR HEART: During the week of February 4-8, all P.E. classes will be participating in “Hoops for Heart”, a fundraiser for the American Heart Association with proceeds going to help people with heart disease, strokes, or other heart-related conditions. Donation forms are coming home today with each child. The deadline for all money raised is February 14, but donations can be sent in anytime before then to the school office. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Geers through the school office.
MARKET DAY: We would like to thank everyone who supported our December Market Day sale and hope you are enjoying all the delicious items (especially that cookie dough!). The sale earned OLSH $454.21. The total amount earned so far for this school year is $2554.56. Your January order sheet came home last week with your child. When you order at www.marketday.com in January, you’re automatically entered in a contest to win exciting prizes, including a Disney vacation package for four, iPods, and $25 Best Buy gift cards. The earlier you order, the more chances you have to win.
On another note, the current Market Day representatives (Barb Adelmann, Patty High, and Wendy Schworer) assumed this role on a one-year commitment. We really believe that this volunteer opportunity should be done by a parent of an OLSH student. As far as the paper portion of the job goes, Market Day does a great job of having mailing labels ready each month, which are put on an envelope in which a folded order form is placed. The other forms are counted out for each homeroom, the office, and the church receptacles. The “It’s Not Too Late to Order” form is also printed by Market Day but needs to be counted out for each homeroom. The paper orders that are sent in to school must be placed on-line. Many customers do their own on-line ordering. How much time each month for this paperwork? Probably no more than two and one-half hours, some of which can be done while watching TV or while little ones are napping. The pickup dates happen once a month and require about 3 hours of unloading, sorting, and making sure orders go home with the right customers. Please consider volunteering for Market Day next year so that this excellent fundraiser will continue at OLSH. We invite you to call one of this year’s representatives to discuss what’s involved and “shadow” this year to prepare you for taking over next year. You can leave a message for any one of us through the school office.
YAC: YAC spring sports signups will be held after all Masses this weekend (January 12/13) and next weekend (January 19/20). Registration will take place in the Tiger Room of the Activity Center for the following sports: boys’ baseball (grades 3 through 8); girls’ softball (grades 3 through 8); boys’ volleyball (grades 3 through 8); boys’ and girls’ soccer (grades K through 7, or ages 4 through 13); and boys’ and girls’ CYO track (grades 7 and 8). Early registration for Golden Bears football (fall of ’08 season) will also take place for boys who will be in grades 3 through 8 in the fall of 2008. Registrations forms are being sent home in this Friday’s packet or are available at www.olshschool.net under Athletics and Programs. For more information, please contact Ken Hoffman at kdhoffman@fuse.net or phone him at 733-9380.
