PAWS (PAUSE) FOR PRAISE:  Third grader Keith Chachoff has been nominated for a “Paws for Praise” award for taking care of an injured first grader on Thursday during recess.  Eighth grader Ben Staley and sixth grader Erik Spraul have been nominated by their teachers as well for demonstrating Christian behavior above and beyond what would be expected.  Congratulations and thank you to Keith, Ben, and Erik.

BULLYING PROGRAM:  We were fortunate to have had Mr. Jim Bisenius with us last Monday, September 18, to present his “Bully-Proofing Today’s Youth” program to all our students here at OLSH.  He also held a special presentation after school for our faculty members.  We have handouts available to any parents who would be interested in reading a portion of the message Mr. Bisenius brought to OSLH.  Just call the school office (733-5225) to have a copy sent home with your child.

EMERGENCY DRILLS:  We held tornado, fire, evacuation, and Shelter in Place drills this past Tuesday, September 19.  All went very smoothly.  Students listened well to all directions, and we feel confident that our plans are very appropriate and provide a high level of safety.

SHADOWING DAYS:  We encourage eighth graders who plan to shadow area high schools to do so on a day when OLSH is not in session.  Since we do not have school on Friday, October 13, Friday, November 10, or on Monday, March 12, these would be excellent days for your eighth grader to visit a high school.  There would be no interruption in teaching and no schoolwork for your child to try to make up.

FAR AND WIDE:  It is interesting to note that we have students at OLSH who come from 12 different school districts:  Cincinnati Public, Deer Park, Indian Hill, Kings, Lakota, Little Miami, Lockland, Loveland, Mason, Princeton, Reading, and Sycamore.  Most of these districts provide bus transportation for our students.  It’s great to have families from so many different areas of Cincinnati choose OLSH for the education of their children!

WITH GRATITUDE:  An OLSH parent has supplied us over the past several years with scrap paper and cardboard from her place of work—materials that would normally be thrown away.  It is always amazing to see how resourceful, imaginative, and thrifty our teachers can be!  Materials like these are snatched up and put to great use.  We thank all parents who donate “scrap” to OLSH.  We are certainly grateful that you think of us.

OLSH PTO FALL MAJOR FUNDRAISER:  We collected $30,000!!!  Awesome job!  Magazines comprised 70% of the sales and Kids Are First products 30%.  The top-selling homeroom and, therefore, winner of the “Bragging Rights” trophy was 5-E.  Way to go!  I have posted lists in the classroom for the students who earned out-of-uniform, Awards Day (as noted below), and End-of-Sale prizes.  I may have overlooked someone, so please contact me if your child tells you that he is not on the list and you feel he qualified for one of the awards.  Out-of-uniform week is Monday, September 25, through Friday, September 29, for any student who sold $100 ($150 for the entire family to qualify).  The Limo Lunch is scheduled for Wednesday, September 27.  Awards Day (Money Wheel, Cheese Derby, Money Machine, and Kick for Kash) is Thursday, September 28, at 1:15 p.m. in the Activity Center.  Parents are welcome to come and watch.  The PTO will host an ice cream social for the entire school on Friday, September 29.  Thanks for your wonderful support!  --Pamela Kennedy (984-4597 or pendres@cinci.rr.com)

DONATIONS FOR DEBI:  We will continue to accept donations for a gift for Mrs. Mace through next Friday, September 29.  We thank you all for your generosity toward Mrs. Mace, who has given selflessly of her talent for many years.

YAC WINTER SPORTS SIGNUPS:  The final weekend for winter sports registrations for girls’ volleyball (grades 3 through 8) and boys’ basketball (grades 3 through high school) is this weekend (September 23/24) after all Masses in the Tiger Room of the OLSH Activity Center.  Registration forms may be downloaded from the OLSH website (“Athletics” “Programs”).  Any questions can be referred to Ken Hoffman at 733-9380 or emailed to him at kdhoffman@fuse.net.

CLASSIC PERFORMANCE:  Parent (and PTO President) Tamara Anderson would like to extend an invitation to the OLSH community to join her for a special, one-night-only performance of “Crazy for Dance, or The History of Dance Is Really All About Annoying Your Parents”.  Tamara is involved with a dance troupe called The Flying Academy of Vintage Dance; she is producing this show with her troupe and several others.  The performance features historically accurate dances, costumes, and music from 1800-1920 and weaves the tale of a contemporary young couple who meet and further their own romantic acquaintance through flashbacks to the ballrooms of Jane Austen, Scarlet O’Hara, the Titanic, and the Roaring 20’s.  The show will take place at Xavier University’s Gallagher Theater on Saturday, September 30, at 8 p.m.  Ticket prices are $12 (adult), $8 (student), and $5 (children 12 and under).  Contact Tamara at 733-3077 for more information or to order tickets.

VISIT ST. URSULA ACADEMY:  St. Ursula will hold its second “Connection Night” (the first was on September 19—we’re sorry we didn’t let you know about that one) on Wednesday, September 27, from 6 p.m. ‘til 7:30 p.m.  All eighth grade girls and their parents are invited to experience the difference that having access to all notes, books, and handouts in one portable electronic package (a Tablet PC) can make for today’s student on the go.  Please call St. Ursula at 961-3410, ext. 416, to R.S.V.P.
