MAGAZINE DRIVE (PTO FALL MAJOR FUNDRAISER):  We brought in $3000 on Thursday, September 7 (our first turn-in day) in magazine and Kids Are First product sales.  This is a good start.  If you need more order forms, just send a note in to the school office or have your child request a form from the office.  Great job of having your student’s name, homeroom, and dollar amount sold on the outside of the envelope.  This way, we were able to hand your children their prizes quickly on Thursday before school started.  Please follow this same procedure for the next two turn-in days.  Here are some dates to mark on your calendar:  September 11 and 14:  Turn-in dates for fundraising sales; September 25-29:  Out-of-uniform week if you sell $100 as an individual or $150 as a family; September 27:   Limo lunch for qualifying seventh and eighth graders; September 28:  Money Wheel, Cheese Derby, Money Machine, and Kick for Kash prizes awarded; and October 5:  Kids Are First products and end-of-sale prizes distributed.  PLEASE NOTE:  If ordering magazines from the Kids Are First catalog, please follow the ordering instructions on page 28 of the booklet.  Any questions?  Call Pam Kennedy at 984-4597 or email her at pendres@cinci.rr.com.

HIGH SCHOOL ENTRANCE EXAM PREP CLASS:  If you would still like to sign up your eighth grader for the prep classes for these Entrance Exams, please send in your registration form with payment on Monday, September 11.  Registration for these classes will close at the end of that day.

ARCHDIOCESE WRITING TEST:  We just received the comparison of the results of OLSH’s 2005-06 writing scores with those of the Archdiocese:

                       GRADE 3                             GRADE 5                          GRADE 8

                      OLSH:  6.0                          OLSH:  5.8                         OLSH:  6.1

                 Archdiocese:  5.4               Archdiocese:  5.4              Archdiocese:  5.6

Scoring is on an 8-point scale.  Students need a 5 or better to pass.  A score of 6 is considered solidly proficient.  Great job, students and teachers!

EMERGENCY DRILLS:  We will conduct several emergency drills one day during the week of September 18.  These drills are:  tornado, evacuation, and Shelter in Place.  The last two we are required to do once a year.  Tornado drills are done periodically during tornado season.  (Fire drills are conducted once a month.)

VOLUNTEERS:  We must follow Archdiocese regulations regarding volunteers.  All volunteers MUST be fingerprinted and MUST have viewed the Child Protection Decree video.  Dan Hackett will facilitate the Child Protection Decree sessions at 7p.m. on September 18, October 16, and November 13 in the OLSH church Community Room.  Fingerprinting can be done at the Holy Trinity Center in Norwood Monday through Thursday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. or at St. John’s in West Chester on Monday and Tuesday from 5 p.m. ‘til 7 p.m., on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. ‘til 7 p.m., or on Saturdays from 9 a.m. ‘til 11 a.m.

MEET FR. RON:  Over the course of the next few months, the parish would like to organize a series of small, casual gatherings to become better acquainted with Fr. Ron.  We are in the early planning stages and are currently looking for volunteers who are willing to host a small reception in their homes.  If you are interested in being a host, please call Sheila Sieder at 733-9767.

YAC WINTER SPORTS SIGNUPS:  Winter sports registrations for girls’ volleyball (grades 3 through 8) and boys’ basketball (grades 3 through high school) will take place on September 16/17 and September 23/24 after all Masses in the Tiger Room of the OLSH Activity Center.   Registration forms may be downloaded from the OLSH website (“Athletics” “Programs”).  Any questions can be referred to Ken Hoffman at 733-9380 or emailed to him at kdhoffman@fuse.net.

YAC JUNIOR HIGH DANCE:  Your seventh and eighth graders will be bringing home today a permission slip for the YAC-sponsored junior high dance to be held on Friday, September 15, from 7 p.m. ‘til 10 p.m. in the Activity Center.  Please do not return these permission slips to the school office—your child must turn it in at the door on the evening of the dance.  We apologize that we had an incorrect date of September 8 for the dance in last week’s newsletter.

SPAGHETTI DINNER:  Sunday, October 8, is OLSH’s 24th annual Spaghetti Dinner.  Volunteer forms are coming home today with your youngest.  This is a fun way to meet new parents and help OLSH!

MARKET DAY:  Our first Market Day sale of this school year will be on September 20.  If you signed up at one of the Meet the Teacher nights to volunteer for Market Day, information will be coming to you via email by Friday, September 15.

We are always in need of student volunteers in grades 6-8 and will once again be offering an incentive.  This year, we will be offering a different prize each month (i.e., $5 restaurant gift cards, $5 Blockbuster gift cards, etc.).  Your child’s name will be entered into this drawing based on his efforts in volunteering (no goofing off, running through hall, etc.).  This month’s prize will be a $5 gift card to McDonald’s.  Your child must remain in the cafeteria during this time (2:30 p.m. ‘til 5:30 p.m.).  Mrs. Adelmann will announce when the signup sheet is posted in the school entrance hallway, usually at least one week prior to the sale.  If you have any questions, please call Lisa Schoenberger (733-4707) or Valerie Grein (891-5830).

Congratulations to the Boothe, Gates, and Nye families who each won a tub of cookie dough, compliments of OLSH PTO, for filling out an “E-Mazing Giveaway” entry form at our Meet the Teacher nights.  They are also entered into a drawing for a 42” plasma TV, sponsored by Market Day.  If you would like to enter the TV drawing, please send your name, address, phone number, and email address via email to schoenbergerl@olshschool.net.  Entry forms will also be available at our next Market Day pickup on Wednesday, September 20.

CAMPBELL’S SOUP LABELS:  Important change!  The Campbell’s Soup Labels organization has changed the way they are accepting labels.  They would like us to cut out the UPC along with the “little soup boy” instead of the front panel.  I am allowed to send in ONE shipment of front labels; so if you have any at home, please send them in to school as soon as possible.  We will still have monthly drawings for out-of-uniform passes, so please put your child’s name and homeroom on the back of each label (only one name per label).  If you have any questions, please call Julie Brown at 769-8005.
