WELCOME TO THE 2006-2007 SCHOOL YEAR!

OUR FIRST WEEK HAS GONE VERY SMOOTHLY,

AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO SPENDING THE UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR WITH YOUR CHILDREN.

GOODBYE and HELLO:  Mrs. Marcia Rogers, our Reading Specialist here at OLSH for the past 23 years, decided to retire at the end of June.  We will certainly miss Mrs. Rogers.  She has been a wonderful asset to our school, and we hope she enjoys her retirement.  Please go to the OLSH website (under “Classrooms”, then “Enrichment”) to read her farewell letter to our school community.  We have two Reading Specialists who will take Mrs. Rogers’ place.  Mrs. Suzanne Fairbanks will be here on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Mrs. Melanie Schatzel will work with our students on Mondays and Wednesdays.  We welcome them both.

OTHER CHANGES…

Mrs. Jody Pelzel has moved back to first grade, replacing Mrs. Marlene O’Brien.

Mrs. Kathy Baker has moved to second grade, replacing Mrs. Kate Rohlfs.

Mrs. Chris Dunlap has moved to third grade, joining Mrs. Laura Peter.

Mrs. Mary Jo Eggenberger has signed on to teach fifth grade, joining Ms. Donna Schafer.

Mrs. Lisa Maciulewicz is the long-term sub for Ms. Leslie Willet, who had back surgery over the summer (and is doing very well).

Mr. Jim Riehle was brave enough to sign on as the only male teacher on our staff and accept the eighth grade teaching position, replacing Mrs. Cindy Creighton.

Mrs. Cheryl Raine has replaced Mrs. Gina Rieman as our Music teacher.

Mrs. Karen Jara will not return; we will not have the services of a school psychologist this year.

Please introduce yourselves when you come across our new staff members and welcome them to our OLSH community.

NAMETAGS:  New this year for all students are nametags (first name and first initial of last name).  Each grade has its own color; students’ nametags will follow them through their years at OLSH.  The children will put their nametags on in the morning when they come to school and will leave them in the classroom at the end of the day.  If you notice that your child has come home still wearing his nametag, please be sure to send him back to school with it the next day.  These nametags will help our new personnel match names with faces and will also allow our upper-level teachers to get to know our new young students sooner.  Please talk with your children about being responsible with their nametags—if a student loses his, he will have to pay $3 to replace it.

TRAFFIC PATTERN:  Please do not pass up cars that are lined up along the sidewalk in the morning to drop off children.  Students are exiting from both sides of vehicles in some cases, and we want morning drop-off to be as safe as possible.  Thank you.

ABSENCE LINE:  Please remember to use the absence line (852-9391) to call in your child’s absence or tardy.  We ask that you make this call by 8 a.m. instead of the previous years’ deadline of 9 a.m.  This earlier time ensures that your child is accounted for as soon as possible.  When you call the absence line, leave the following information:  your child’s name, homeroom, the reason for his absence/tardy, and with whom homework should be sent.  (This child does not have to be in the same class or grade as your child—ideally, it would be someone who lives close to you so that picking up homework is not a problem.)  You may also opt to have homework sent to the office so that you can pick it up there.  We are in the office (officially) until 3:30 p.m.; after that time, we can place your child’s work in the grey box to the left of the school entrance doors underneath the blue awning so that you can pick it up at your convenience that evening.

DEADLINES:  If you would like us to put information in this newsletter, please bring or send it to the school office with your child no later than 9 a.m. on Thursday.  Moms will pack students’ take-home folders after the 8:15 a.m. all-school Mass on Fridays, and this newsletter needs to be ready to go in those folders.  Please have any fliers that you want to send home with the students in their Friday folders to the office by Thursday morning, also.  Thank you for your cooperation.

MEET THE TEACHER NIGHTS:  Plan to join us for Meet the Teacher Night(s).  If you have a student in grades 1 through 4, please come on Wednesday, August 30; if you have a student in grades 5 through 8, come on Tuesday, August 29.  Some of you will have the chance to come both nights!  Both sessions will include the opportunity to sign up to volunteer for various PTO events before and after you visit your child’s classroom.  Uniform exchange will also be available.  We hope to see all our parents there!

MARKET DAY:  We are looking for an organized individual willing to step up as next year’s chairperson.  This year would be spent “shadowing” our current chairperson.  Visit the Market Day table at one of the Meet the Teacher nights for more info.

BAND:  Mrs. Becky Jones of The Music Staff will be our band instructor again this year.  Mrs. Jones will meet with current fourth graders one day next week to talk about joining Beginning Band.  Their practices will be held once a week during their regularly scheduled Music class.  Advanced Band (for students in grades 5 through 8) will meet for practice every Monday during lunch beginning Monday, September 11.

YEARBOOKS:  If you ordered a 2005-06 yearbook, it is being sent home with one of your children today.  Any questions can be referred to Alison O’Neill at 769-4853.

YMCA AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM:  The Blue Ash YMCA offers an after-school program both at Reading Hilltop School and at the Blue Ash Y.  They have a van that comes to OLSH at dismissal to transport students to the program.  Please call Dave Hennessey, School-Age Child Card Site Administrator, at the Blue Ash Branch YMCA (791-5000, ext. 2617) for further information.

MARKETING:  Parents are our most effective marketing tool.  Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School appreciates referrals that school families and parishioners make.  We encourage you to continue this “word of mouth” advertising.

MND FALL THEATRE PRODUCTION:  Mt. Notre Dame’s Theatre Department will hold tryouts for its November, 2006 production of “The Sound of Music” on Friday, September 1, from 3:30 p.m. ‘til 6 p.m. and on Saturday, September 2, from 10 a.m. ‘til 1 p.m. in the MND Salerno Center for the Performing Arts (located in the high school at 711 E. Columbia Avenue).  Auditions are open to students in grades one through eight.

ALUMNI NEWS:  We will be posting items of interest regarding OLSH alumni on the bulletin board near the junior high classrooms.  Parents—send us information about your children who have moved on from OLSH to high school or college.  We’d love to hear what they are doing!
