PTO BREAKFAST:  Plan to join your friends immediately following the final all-school Mass on Friday, June 1, in the Community Room for a breakfast hosted by PTO.  All parents, their young children not yet in school, and our current eighth graders who return that day to attend the Mass and moving-up ceremony are invited to mingle until school is dismissed at 10:30 a.m.  It’s a great way to meet new families and say good-bye for the summer to your OLSH family!

PTO:  Our last meeting of the school year will be this Monday, May 21, at 7 p.m. in the lower level of the Parish Center.  At this important meeting, we will vote to approve the budget for next school year.  Other topics will include the Graduation Reception, Spirit Day, and the Parent Appreciation Breakfast.  Babysitting will be available.  We hope to see you there!

OLSH FESTIVAL MAJOR AWARD RAFFLE RESULTS:  Thanks to everyone who participated in selling tickets for the OLSH Summer Festival Major Award.  Together we raised almost $2900!  That’s about half of the Major Award!  One hundred eleven students sold enough tickets ($20 per student/$50 per family) to earn and enjoy an out-of-uniform day THIS MONDAY, MAY 21.  Mrs. Baker’s top-selling second grade homeroom will enjoy a pizza party on Tuesday, May 22.  Mrs. Pelzel’s first grade and Mrs. Tebbe’s fourth grade homerooms will cool off with a Popsicle party (date to be announced) because each homeroom sold at least $300 worth of tickets.  Thank you for supporting your festival!

KINDERGARTEN VISIT:  Parents—if you have a current kindergartner who will be in first grade at OLSH for the 2007-2008 school year, remember that this coming Wednesday is his/her day to visit our current first grade and Mrs. Pelzel.  This is an informal one-half hour visit that we hope will help acclimate your child to first grade here at OLSH.  While your child is visiting, join other parents in the Community Room to view Spiritwear and uniform exchange items and to get to know each other.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES:  Every child in grades one through seven is bringing home today an order form for pre-packaged school supplies.   WE MUST HAVE THESE ORDERS AND PAYMENT IN THE SCHOOL OFFICE NO LATER THAN NEXT FRIDAY, MAY 25, so that we can place the orders in time to have them available for pickup the weekend of August 11/12.   (This is merely a convenience for you and is not mandatory—you may certainly buy your child’s school supplies on your own.)

PENN ALERT TEST:  Please read the PENN Alert letter coming home today with your youngest.  This letter explains the notification system that will replace our current Hotline.  We will conduct a test of this system this coming Thursday, May 24, at 11 a.m. (early dismissal notification) and again at 6 p.m. (school closing notification).

FIFTH/EIGHTH GRADE PRESENTATIONS:  Parents of students in all grades are invited to a special evening this coming Thursday, May 24.  Ms. Schafer’s fifth grade will present The Rock Slinger and His Greatest Hit—The Story of David and Goliath from 7 p.m. ‘til 7:45 p.m.  After a brief intermission, plan to stay as Mr. Riehle and the eighth graders present Poetry through the Ages.  The students and teachers have worked really hard to make this an evening to remember!

2007-2008 SCHOOL DIRECTORY:  If you have not yet returned your completed 2007-2008 School Directory form, please do so this Monday, May 21.  We will work on this Directory over the summer so that your families can have copies as soon as possible after the start of the new school year.

SPIRITWEAR:  Please return any Spiritwear order forms with payment no later than this coming Friday, May 25.  Make your check payable to “OLSH YAC” and send orders marked “Spiritwear” to the school office.  All orders will be placed over the summer, and delivery will be made to your child’s homeroom sometime during the first week of school.  Call Laura Benson (984-6984) with any questions.

SPRING PICTURES:  If you’ve not yet returned your child’s spring portrait package or payment, please do so NO LATER THAN THIS MONDAY, MAY 21.  Lifetouch will be making a final pickup early next week.

SUMMER FUN:  Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Rohlfs will again be holding two very fun and popular classes this summer as part of Summer Readology—Busy As Bees.  If you have a child who will be in Kindergarten through fourth grade next fall, see the flyer coming home today with details about this program.

LIBRARY BOOKS/FINES:  All library and fines were to have been turned in by Friday, May 18.  If your child still has a book or an outstanding fine, please return either by Monday, May 21 so that our volunteers can close the library for the summer.  Thank you.

EIGHTH GRADE VIDEO:  A letter regarding the eighth grade video was sent home last Friday.  If you haven’t returned the bottom portion of this letter yet, please do so no later than this Monday, May 21.  We are requesting that you return this whether you are ordering a video or not.  All DVD copies must be ordered by this date (May 21)—copies will not be available later.

IGA LABELS:  Send in any IGA labels/UPCs that you may have at home.  Please put them in a Ziploc bag and place the bag in the Campbell’s containers at the church, school, or cafeteria entrances.  These labels are not eligible for the out-of-uniform passes, so there’s no need to write your child’s name on them.  Lisa Schoenberger will be counting labels and will send them in June to be redeemed.

MARKET DAY:  STOCK UP FOR THE SUMMER!  Our final sale for this school year will be on Wednesday, June 6.  All orders are due by Thursday, May 31.  There will be no summer sales.  Our next sale (the first for the 2007-2008 school year) will be on September 12.

SUMMER WORK FOR STUDENTS:  This is a reminder that students currently in grades 2 through 7 have the OPTION of purchasing a Summer Bridge Activity Book to review work done in the grade just completed as well as to preview work that will be covered in the next grade.  (Mrs. Baker will be sending home with current first graders a packet of work which she will use at the beginning of the new school year.)  Any student who returns all his summer work will have his name entered into a drawing for a prize.  We encourage you to keep your children mentally active to maintain and enhance scholastic skills while away from school over the summer!

GIRL SCOUT AWARD:  Junior Girl Scout Troop 390 received the Bronze Award, the highest recognition a Junior Girl Scout can earn, in a ceremony on Thursday, May 17, at OLSH Church.  Reading Mayor Bo Bemmes presented Leah Anderson, Paige Brown, Molly Ernstes, Grace Kallenberg, Ellen O’Neill, and Ashley Peter with their award pin and certificate.  In addition, Mayor Bemmes proclaimed May 17, 2007, “Junior Girl Scout Troop 390 Day”.  In order to earn this award, the girls had to complete requirements for two badges related to the project, spend numerous hours developing their leadership skills, and complete one of the Girl Scout Signs.  The fourth requirement is a community service project.  Our troop worked together to create a variety show based on the theme of friendship.  The girls chose the music, choreographed their own dance, and showcased their individual talents.  The girls took this show “on the road” to the retired nuns at Mt. Notre Dame, the Ronald McDonald House at Children’s Hospital, and to Grace Kallenberg’s grandfather’s nursing home.  Congratulations, Girl Scout Troop 390!

KUDOS:  The OLSH eighth grade boys’ baseball team finished the season in first place in their league and will now be one of four teams in the CYO tournament.  Their semi-final game vs. St. James White Oak is this Sunday, May 20, at 5:30 p.m. at Koenig Park in Reading.  If they win on Sunday, they will play in the finals on Sunday, May 27, at 3:30 p.m. at St. Ignatius #1.  Congratulations and good luck to these boys!

YAC NEWS:  The new OLSH fall pre-school U-6 Candy Soccer League needs more players!  Four- and five-year-olds co-ed teams play three-on-three on Friday nights.  Max:  six players per team.  To register, contact Bill Moulliet at bmoulliet@fuse.net or Ed Riordan at eriordan@zoomtown.com.

FESTIVAL HELP NEEDED:  The Festival Bakery Booth is in need of yummy, tempting baked goods for our pure-profit booth (located, along with the bottled pop and water, under the large dining tent near the grill).  Bring your baked creations during setup the morning of Friday, June 22, or before shifts begin on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.  We need individual treats and whole desserts to sell.   Contact Ann Falci at 793-4431 with questions or for suggestions on what to bring.  The Bid ‘N Buy Booth is looking for some artistic/creative people to paint and decorate some wood items.  Booth chair Julie Gorsuch hopes to have one decorated item per grade, signed by all the students.  Email her at gorsuch_j@olshschool.net.  We can store any items you may have for the Bid ‘N Buy Booth in the school library.  Contact Julie for more info.
