TEACHER ASSIGNMENTS FOR 2007-2008:  We regret to announce that Mr. Jim Riehle will be leaving OLSH.  However, we are thrilled to tell you that he will be entering the Seminary to study for the priesthood.  Mrs. Mary Jo Eggenberger will be moving into Mr. Riehle’s teaching position for next year and will teach the same subjects he did this year.  She and Mrs. Lisa Maciulewicz (who will continue in her teaching assignment) will have seventh grade homerooms.  Mrs. Patty High and Mrs. Wendy Schworer will have eighth grade homerooms and will continue to teach their same subjects.  We know you join us in wishing Mr. Riehle the best of luck, and we hope to see many of you when he celebrates his first Mass some years from now!

PAUSE (PAWS) FOR PRAISE:  Mrs. Medl, mother of Matthew in Grade 1, would like to thank first grader Austin Lawson for helping Matthew carry out his birthday treat containers after school on Thursday.  That was very kind and helpful of you, Austin!

YAC FALL SPORTS SIGNUPS:  This weekend is the last one for you to sign up your child to play YAC fall sports (basketball and cheerleading for girls in grades 3 through 8, soccer for girls and boys in grades K through 8, and Golden Bears football for boys in grades 3 through 8).  Signups will take place in the Tiger Room of the Activity Center after all Masses this weekend.

FINE ARTS DAY:  We invite all parents, grandparents, and friends to join us for Fine Arts Day “Rock ‘n Roll Show” on Thursday, May 17, beginning at 12:45 p.m. in the Activity Center.  Mrs. Cheryl Raine, Music teacher, and your children have been working hard on the music portion of this program.  Stop in the school afterwards to view your children’s artwork, which Art teacher Mrs. Terry Carpenter will have displayed on the hallway walls.  The artwork will stay up through next weekend.  Come see the talent we have here at OLSH!

SPRING PORTRAITS:  Today your child will be bringing home his/her spring portrait.  Portrait packages have been printed only for students photographed on April 19—there are no retakes for spring pictures.)  If you do not want the pictures, please return them to school immediately.  If you wish to buy all or part of your package, see the instructions included in the package.  Please return all unwanted pictures and/or money by Friday, May 18.  We appreciate your cooperation.

KINDERGARTEN SCREENING:  If you have an incoming Kindergartner for 2007-2008, your child has a screening appointment with Kindergarten teacher Mrs. Nikki Cromer on Friday, May 18.  Please call the school office (733-5225) if you have any questions about this.

KINDERGARTNERS’ VISIT DAY:  All current Kindergartners who will attend first grade at OLSH in 2007-2008 are invited to spend a half-hour with current first graders on Wednesday, May 23.  If you have not yet scheduled your child’s morning (10 a.m. ‘til 10:30 a.m.) or afternoon (1:30 p.m. ‘til 2 p.m.) visit, please call the school office to do that.

FIRST GRADE SCREENING:  2007-2008 first graders will meet one-on-one with first grade teacher Mrs. Jody Pelzel for a screening test made up of hands-on, fun activities.  The dates for this screening are Tuesday or Wednesday, August 14 or 15, from 8 a.m. ‘til 2:30 p.m.  Please call the school office if you have not yet scheduled this screening.

SUMMER WORK FOR STUDENTS:  This is a reminder that students currently in grades 2 through 7 have the OPTION of purchasing a Summer Bridge Activity Book, the original summer learning program which consists of daily activities in Reading, Writing, Mathematics, and Language Arts with bonus activities in Science and Geography.  These books are available from School Time in Blue Ash, Joseph-Beth in Norwood, any Barnes and Noble, or from Holcomb’s KnowPlace.  When you purchase a book, be sure to look for the book geared to the grade your child was in this year and the grade he will be entering in August.  (For example:  if your child was in sixth grade and will be going into seventh, purchase the Summer Bridge Activities for 6-7.)  You will find that the activities review the completed grade as well as preview the next grade.  Mrs. Baker, second grade teacher, will be sending home with current first graders a packet of work which she will use at the beginning of the new school year.  AN INCENTIVE:  Any student who returns all his summer work will have his name entered into a drawing for a prize (competing against students in his grade only).  We encourage you to keep your children mentally active to maintain and enhance scholastic skills while away from school over the summer.

SUMMER TUTORING:  Would your child benefit from summer tutoring?  Whether to master concepts not fully understood during the school year or to maintain skills for the next school year, tutoring can be valuable time spent.  Mrs. Mary Jo Eggenberger, current OLSH fifth grade teacher, will again be offering tutoring sessions this summer at OLSH.  If you are interested in tutoring for your child, please feel free to leave a message for her at the school office (733-5225) or email her at eggenbergerm@olshschool.net.  She will be happy to respond to your request.

OTHER TUTORING HELP AVAILABLE:  Mrs. Marlene O’Brien, former first grade teacher at OLSH, is also offering tutoring.  Please call Mrs. O’Brien at 791-5199 if you would like to have her tutor your child this summer.

FESTIVAL NEWS:  Help support the OLSH Summer Festival by selling Major Award raffle tickets.  These were sent home with each child last Friday.  The last day to turn in sold tickets for out-of-uniform passes is this coming Tuesday, May 15.  Right now, 4-T is in the lead for the pizza party being offered to the highest selling homeroom; any homeroom reaching its goal of $300 worth of tickets sold will be eligible for Popsicles.  Remember also to send in your items for the Basket Booth and to volunteer for your individual homeroom booths.  YOUR FESTIVAL NEEDS YOU!

LIBRARY:  Friday, May 11, was the last day for students to check out library books.  All books must be returned by next Friday, May 18.

SUMMER YOUTH CHOIR:  The adult choir breaks for the summer after the Memorial Day weekend.  Mr. Michael Collins, OLSH Music Director, is putting together a Summer Youth Choir for students who will be in grades 8 through 12 in 2007-2008.  Please see the flyer coming home today with all seventh- and eighth-grade students for details.

SPIRITWEAR:  Please look for Spiritwear order forms coming home today.  All orders and money are due by Friday, May 25.  Make your check payable to “OLSH YAC” and send orders to the office in an envelope marked “Spiritwear”.  PARENTS, PLEASE NOTE:  Check to see what items your child will need to begin the school year next August.  If items are needed, you must order now.  All orders will be placed over the summer, and delivery will be made to your child’s homeroom sometime during the FIRST WEEK of school.  If you have any questions, please call Laura Benson at 984-6984.
