RIGHT-TO-READ WEEK:  Next week we celebrate the simple pleasure and value of reading.  Check with your child to find out what activities are planned in his classroom.  Perhaps your family could turn off the TV one night and devote the evening to reading or discussion of something you have read during the day.

POWER OF THE PEN:  We forgot to list two members of the OLSH Power of the Pen team.  Eighth grader Michael Gallo and seventh grader Jeremy Staley, although alternates, were very much active participants, giving up their Saturday to attend the competition and volunteering to be runners for the judges.  We apologize for leaving them off the original list.

CANCELED FIELD TRIP:  We had an all-school field trip scheduled for this past Tuesday, February 27.  Our students were going to Ss. Peter and Paul School to listen to the drug-free message of the band “Most Wanted”; but one of the singers had laryngitis, so they had to cancel.  The field trip has been rescheduled for Tuesday, March 27.  In a couple of weeks, we will send home new permission slips for parents to complete and return.  Sorry for the inconvenience!

KINDERGARTEN AT OLSH:  Enough interest has been shown to pursue starting a Kindergarten program at OLSH, and we are very pleased to announce that we will have Kindergarten here for the 2007-08 school year!   We have received approval of the School Commission and the Finance Committee.   Registration for 20 students is anticipated.  It will be a full day with the same hours as our other grades.  Bus transportation will, of course, be available as for our other students.  I have asked Mrs. Nikki Cromer, who is the current Kindergarten teacher at Ss. Peter and Paul School, to continue the program next year at OLSH.  The resources and materials of their program will be made available to us.  We still have details to work out, and we will be having a Kindergarten parent meeting in the months to come.  Because we currently have a charter for grades 1 through 8, we are applying for a charter change for a K through 8 school.  This application must be completed in the next two weeks.  If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact the school office.  –Mrs. Barbara Adelmann

CALENDAR FOR 2007-08:  The new school year calendar will be available by April.  We are going to go with trimesters (3 grading periods) instead of quarters (4 grading periods).  Schools in our cluster that have been on trimesters for a few years have given very positive feedback.  Conferences will be held after first interims, which will give students an opportunity to improve their grades before receiving their first report card.  The second trimester will go until the end of February, giving students more grading time (since the holidays fall in this second trimester).  We certainly will evaluate this system at the end of the school year.

LENTEN RAFFLE:  Congratulations to winners of our first Lenten raffle—Caroline Gallo (Tiger Paw pillow made by Mrs. Dunlap); Collin McHugh (I-tunes); Graci Doll (High School Musical DVD); and Ryan Gordon, Kelsey Eagan, Stephanie Lyons, Leighton Vaske, and Katie Stautberg (out-of-uniform passes).  Check your child’s take-home folder for a list of this coming week’s raffle items.  Tickets can be bought every day before school in Ms. Schafer’s room—25 cents each or five for $1.   We have collected a total of $196 to be donated to Nicaragua.  Thanks for your generosity!

FISH FRY:  The OLSH Annual Fish Fry Fridays will be held on March 16, 23, and 30 from 4:30 p.m. ‘til 7 p.m.  Dinners will cost $7; kids’ meals will be $4.  This year, we will feature “Specials of the Day”.  On March 16, we will have baked fish; on March 23, crab cakes; and on March 30, mozzarella breadsticks.  If you haven’t signed up to work and would still like to help out, please call Mary Beth Armstrong (793-4574).  Remember—if you can’t volunteer to work, we can always use desserts.  Please bring desserts of all kinds to the Tiger Room in the Activity Center on the day of the Fish Fry.  Mark your calendars and plan to attend one or all of our great Fish Fry Fridays!  Thank you.

CAMPBELL’S SOUP LABELS:  We apologize for the delay in getting out-of-uniform passes to our December and January winners.  Our winners for December are: Lauren Stevenson (1-P); Brett Elmlinger and Kaitlyn Fryman (3-D); Jennifer Sutor (4-T); Cody Kloth and Danny Miller (5-E); Kristin Sutor (5-S); and Luke Shadley (8-R).  January winners are:  Dakota Handorf (2-B); Henry Kuechly and Ben Sieder (3-D); Caroline Gallo and Jennifer Sutor (4-T); Mary Ann Gottschlich (5-E); Caleb Von Lehmden (5-S); and Leah Anderson (6-G).  Keep sending in your UPCs!  Call Julie Brown (769-8005) with any questions.

YAC JR. HIGH DANCE:  This dance will be held next Friday, March 9, from 7 p.m. ‘til 10 p.m. and will feature DJ Beatzz.  The cost is $7 (which includes soft drinks), and the dance is open to all seventh and eighth grade students.  Visit the OLSH website (www.olshschool.net) for the permission form and details.  Click on Athletics, then Programs, then Jr. High Dances to download the form.  We still need sixth grade parent volunteers (six) for dance chaperones and seventh and eighth grade parent volunteers (six to eight) for check-in, concessions, and outside security and cleanup after the dance.  Please contact Ed Riordan or Dan Hackett if you can help.  Even two hours at the beginning (6:30 p.m. ‘til 8:30 p.m.) or at the end (9:30 p.m. ‘til ?) for cleanup and taking down decorations will be a great help!

ST. PAT’S PARTY:  Join us at our Parish St. Pat’s Party on Friday, March 16, from 9 p.m. ‘til 1 a.m. (after the first OLSH Fish Fry of the season).  The cost is $15 per couple/$8 individual, which includes snacks and soft drinks.  YAC extends special “appreciation rates” for OLSH sports coaches and guests.  Music is by Debbie the DJ; you must be 21 to attend.  Groups—reserve your tables now!  Contact any YAC Board member for tickets and details.

LOST AND FOUND:  A small gold necklace found in the gym on February 22 is still unclaimed.  Two more necklaces were found in the gym this past week.  Please call the school office if you think any of these items belong to you.
