INTERIMS:  Parents—Please check for interims coming home with all students today.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART:  Donations for Jump Rope for Heart were due on Friday, February 23.  If you forgot to send in your donation, please do so NO LATER THAN Monday, February 26.

SCHOOL-WIDE FIELD TRIP:  All students will be going to Ss. Peter and Paul School on Tuesday, February 27, for a drug-free message presented in concert by the band “Most Wanted”.  Every student must have a completed and signed permission slip in order to be able to go on this field trip; these permission slips are coming home today and must be returned by MONDAY, FEBRUARY 26.  No student will be permitted to attend the field trip without this permission slip.  Details are on the form.

LENTEN RAFFLES:  We are continuing the tradition of Lenten raffles.  For many years, OLSH has supported the Cultural Center of Batahola Norte, Nicaragua.  This is the center that the late Sr. Margie (sister of former auxiliary clerk Mrs. Jan Otten) began in 1983.  It has grown into a true oasis in a community that knows great poverty.  Our Lenten raffles are one way students can donate to this worthy cause.  Different items (donated by teachers and eighth graders) are raffled off each week; tickets are 25 cents each or 5 for $1 and can be purchased every morning before school in Ms. Schafer’s homeroom.  The winners of each week’s raffle are announced after song practice on Tuesday mornings.  Please see the list of this week’s raffle items coming home today with your youngest.  In addition, each homeroom has a “Nica” jar in which students can deposit donations; every Tuesday, we will add the contents of each homeroom jar to our all-school container and will send that along with all raffle money to Batahola at the end of the Lenten season.  We thank you in advance for your generosity and your encouragement to your children to be generous as well.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS:  Feel free to join us during Lent as we pray the Stations of the Cross.  With the help of our eighth graders, we have placed large posters of the Stations around the school building.  On Friday, March 9 and March 30, we will begin in church and proceed around the school hallways to pray the Stations by each homeroom door.  On Friday, March 2 and 16, Stations will be said in church.  On Friday, March 23, the sixth grade will present Shadow Stations of the Cross in the Activity Center.  All of these devotions will take place at 1:30 p.m.  Living Stations of the Cross will be presented by the eighth graders on Tuesday, April 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the church and again on Holy Thursday, April 5, at 1:30 p.m. in the church.  We hope this isn’t too confusing, but we have a lot to offer to make this Lenten season meaningful!  As a reminder, we will list all Stations each week in the top portion of this Newsletter.

POWER OF THE PEN UPDATE:  All of OLSH’s participants in the initial round of the Power of the Pen tournament held on Saturday, February 10, received an “honorable” rating.  We are proud to announce that eighth grader Maria Gallagher and seventh grader Carly McFarland both received a “merit” rating, which qualifies them to compete at the Regional level on Saturday, April 14, at Sycamore High School.  We congratulate all of our Power of the Pen writers:  seventh graders Nate Brunty, Theresa Guye, Jenna Kalthoff, Carly McFarland, Danielle Mitsch, and Joey Walsh; and eighth graders Kevin Bishop, Maria Gallagher, Molly Hildebrandt, Kiki Isaac, Katie Lenart, and Luke Shadley.

MORE KUDOS:  We congratulate sixth grader Hallie Sansbury, who has qualified to advance to the State Championship level of the Reader’s Digest National Word Power Challenge.  Hallie will compete with other sixth, seventh, and eighth grade champions from schools across Ohio on March 19.  Good luck, Hallie!

HOTLINE HELP:  If you work full-time and are unable to be at school to volunteer for your child’s class, would you consider helping out with Hotline phone calls?  These initial calls are made to room mothers when Mrs. Adelmann has determined that school cannot be in session due to  weather reasons or building malfunctions.  Mrs. Adelmann activates the Hotline as soon as possible, either the night before or as early as possible in the morning.  “Many hands make light work”--more people making the calls to homeroom moms would mean that parents would be notified in the most efficient manner.  Call Heather VonLehmden at 733-3337 if you’d like to help out.  Thank you.

PTO:  Plan to join us this Monday, February 26, at 7 p.m. in the lower level of the Parish Center for our monthly PTO meeting.  Agenda items for this meeting include the Talent Show, the Fish Fry, Mother’s Day Flower Sale, and Spirit Day.  Remember—only members present can influence the outcome and vote on issues!

PTO NEEDS YOU!  Nominations are needed for the 2007-08 PTO Board.  You can nominate yourself or another parent.  It’s a great opportunity to get more involved with your child’s education.  Our current President and Treasurer intend to step down at the end of this school year.  Nominations are being accepted for all positions—President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.  Contact Alison O’Neill at alisononeill@fuse.net.

YAC:  YAC is still looking for additional soccer players for the spring season for the following divisions:  girls Passers (K-Gr. 1--must be under 8 years of age as of 8/1/07); boys Wings (Gr. 3—must be under 10 years of age as of 8/1/07); and girls Strikers (Gr. 5 and Gr. 6—must be under 12 years of age as of 8/1/07).

YAC DANCE:  Seventh and eighth graders are invited to the next YAC Junior High Dance to be held on Friday, March 9, from 7 p.m. ‘til 10 p.m.  Cost is $7, which includes soft drinks.  Permission forms and details can be found on the OLSH website:  www.olshschool.net; click on Athletics, then Programs, then Jr. Dances to download form.  Parents:  interested in helping to chaperone or in working the check-in?  Contact Ed Riordan or Dan Hackett.

LOST AND FOUND:  Mrs. Geers found a necklace in the gym on Thursday; please call the school office to claim it.  Also, there was a small (5T) grey Old Navy sweatshirt left at the Talent Show auditions on Thursday.  Both items are in the office.
