FIRST RECONCILIATION:   Congratulations to our second graders and our CCD students who made their First Reconciliation this past Wednesday evening (despite the cold, snow, and icy conditions!).   A special “thank you” to Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Gorsuch for helping these children prepare for this important event in their religious lives.

CYCLONES PERFORMANCE:  We hope that our fifth graders are in good voice tonight as they sing our National Anthem before the start of the Cyclones hockey game.  Thank you to Music instructor Mrs. Cheryl Raine for giving them this experience.

RUN, JUMP, ‘N PLAY:  We regret to inform you that we did not have enough children sign up for our OLSH day (Monday, Presidents’ Day) at Run, Jump, ‘N Play.  We needed 75 students to sign up in order to get the discounted rate.  Look for your un-cashed check coming home with your child today.  Hopefully, we can try for another time.

TALENT SHOW AUDITIONS:  Talent Show auditions will be held after school on Tuesday, February 20, and Thursday, February 22, from 2:30 p.m. ‘til 4 p.m. in the Activities Center.  Please make sure that you have signed up to audition on either one of these dates.  The signup sheets are in the music room.  Any questions can be referred to Mrs. Raine through school or to Tamara Anderson at 733-3077.

LENT:  Lent will begin with an all-school Mass on Ash Wednesday, February 21.  The theme this year is “Following the Path of Christ”.  We have several activities planned, including:  the construction of a path of stones along the school walls displaying Discipline with Purpose skills; assignment of prayer partners; Lenten teacher raffle; and Prayer Service/Bingo Night (Thursday, March 22 at 7 p.m.).  Also, we will remember our shut-ins and include in our prayers our eighth graders who will be confirmed on March 13 at 7:30 p.m.  Students will participate in several Friday Stations of the Cross devotions, beginning on Friday, February 23, at 1:30 p.m. in the church and proceeding around the school corridors.  Each Friday’s Stations of the Cross activity will be a little bit different, including a Shadow Stations of the Cross on March 23 at 1:30 p.m. (presented by the sixth grade).  We will end our Stations with a special Holy Thursday (April 5) Living Stations of the Cross at 1:30 p.m. (presented by the eighth grade).  We invite and encourage all parents to make your Lenten season more meaningful by participating with us.

STRAIGHT ‘A’ STUDENTS:  The following junior high students achieved straight A’s on their second quarter report cards and thus were awarded Cincinnati Reds Straight ‘A’ tickets:  Paul Anderson, Nate Brunty, Kelly Davidson, Patrick Goddard, Kyle Gordon, Rachel Grein, Kiki Isaac, Luke Kloth, Carly McFarland, Gabe Rapp, Luke Shadley, and Joey Walsh.  Congratulations!

POWER OF THE PEN:  Fourteen seventh and eighth grade students from OLSH participated in the first round of the Power of the Pen writing tournament held last Saturday.  We don’t know yet whether any of them will advance to the Regionals; but we do know that our boys won the basketball tournament held after the writing competition while they had “down” time during the scoring session!  We’ll let you know how the writing portion of the tournament went!

DONATION:  Money raised from activities held during Catholic Schools Week was donated to Matthew:25 Ministries.  We presented their representative with a check for $166.87.  Thank you for your generosity.

TUITION:  Some families did not receive reminders for the second half of the 2006-07 school year tuition, which was due on February 1.  If you have questions about the amount you owe, please call the Parish Office (733-4950).

BOXTOPS FOR EDUCATION:  Please send in any Boxtops for Education you may have been collecting, as the final submission date for this school year is February 28.  We ask that you put your boxtops in a plastic bag and send them in with your child to the school office so that it is easier for Mrs. Gorsuch to collect them.  Thank you.

KROGER CARD UPDATE:  You can now use your OLSH Kroger gift card to pay for gasoline at Kroger fuel pumps!  The credit card option on the pumps now also includes the gift cards.  Use them the same as a credit card.  (You will still get your 10- or 15-cent rebate.)  There has been some confusion about what purchases earn money for OLSH when using these gift cards.  OLSH is credited as soon as you add money to the card, regardless of what it’s spent on.  Although the KrogerPlus points are affected by what you purchase (some items such as cigarettes do not earn points), that is not the case with these cards.  If you do not have a card or would like more, please stop by the Scrip sale on the second weekend of the month or contact either Sandy (733-5235) or Lori (984-9313).
