CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK:  We are excited about celebrating Catholic Schools Week!  The theme this year is “Catholic Schools—The ‘Good News’ in Education”.  We have listed the highlights of the week in the calendar above, all in this font.  Please check with your youngest for a complete calendar of events for the week, culminating in our Open House on Sunday, February 4, followed by a special Mass and reception to honor Ms. Leslie Willet’s retirement after forty years of dedicated teaching at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School.  We look forward to seeing and visiting with all of you there!

NO SCHOOL ON FEBRUARY 5:  Due to Open House and Ms. Willet’s retirement celebration the afternoon of February 4, we will not have school on Monday, February 5.  This day off will also give Mr. Moeggenberg an opportunity to check into the numerous power outages that have been occurring.

REPORT CARDS:  Report cards will be coming home with your children on Friday, January 26.  Fr. Ron visited each classroom and handed them out to each student.  Unfortunately, due to Mrs. Osborne’s illness and absence from school most of this past week, 6-G and 6-O report cards will be sent home one day the week of January 29 instead of today (January 26).  In addition, we ask parents of eighth graders to pay special attention to the letter from Fr. Ron included in each eighth-grade report card envelope.

PAUSE (PAWS) FOR PRAISE:  Music teacher Mrs. Cheryl Raine thanks fifth grader Christian Elfers for “pausing” on his way out of the school grounds to help her with a huge armload of materials which he took to her car.  Mrs. Pelzel recognizes first grader Daniel Stroh.  Last week, an eighth grader selling milk accidentally dumped the bucket of straws.  Daniel was the only student who stopped to help him pick them up.  Thank you, Christian and Daniel.

HONOREE:  Eighth grader Sara Carota earned a 92% on her high school entrance exam.  Because Sara has decided to attend Ursuline Academy, she was not included on the list of Mt. Notre Dame High School’s St. Julie Billiart Honorees.  Congratulations, Sara!

SPELLING BEE:  Congratulations to eighth grader Jacqueline Lopez, OLSH’s representative in The Cincinnati Post Spelling Bee held this past Wednesday at Union Terminal.  Jacqueline finished seventh in her division.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART:  During the week of February 12-16, all P.E. classes will be participating in “Jump Rope for Heart”, a fundraiser for the American Heart Association with proceeds going to help people with heart disease, strokes, or other heart-related conditions.  Donation forms are coming home today with each child.  The deadline for all money raised is Friday, February 23; but money may be turned in anytime before then to the school office.  If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Geers through the office.

TALENT SHOW AUDITIONS:  Remember to sign up to audition for the third annual Talent Show.  Auditions will be held after school on Tuesday, February 20, and Thursday, February 22. The signup sheet is hanging in the Music Room.  Contact Mrs. Tamara Anderson (733-3077) with any questions you might have.

KROGER GIFT CARDS:  Thank you to everyone who is using their Kroger cards.  In 2006, OLSH earned $5412 from the use of these cards.  A portion of this income goes to the parish, and a portion goes toward school tuition reduction.  Please continue to use your cards and add additional money to them as needed.  If you would like to get a Kroger card, they will be available at the next Scrip gift certificate sale the second weekend of February.

IGA LABELS FOR LEARNING:  Please continue to save your IGA brand labels/UPCs.  Please put them in a Ziploc bag marked “IGA Labels” and drop them in the Campbell’s containers.  We have many programs using these containers, and bagging your IGA labels will make it easier for each chairperson to retrieve the correct UPCs/labels.  It is not necessary to put your child’s name on the back of the IGA labels, as these are not included in the monthly drawing.  If you have any questions, please call Lisa Schoenberger at 733-4707.

OLSH YOUNG FAMILIES WELCOME BRUNCH:  OLSH’s Young Families Group is a social organization consisting of parents and young children ages newborn to early elementary school.  Families participate in fun monthly activities for parents and children including Mom’s night out, holiday festivities, service projects for the parish, hospitality, and support to families in need.  The brunch will take place on Sunday, January 28, in the Community Room immediately following the 10:30 a.m. Mass.  This is a great opportunity to learn more about the Young Families organization.  Questions?  Call Yvonne France (769-5918) or email her at eyfrance@fuse.net.
