PAUSE (PAWS) FOR PRAISE:  Mrs. Schworer would like to thank eighth grader Michael Gallo for faithfully helping a fellow classmate with his bookbag, lunch, etc.  Mrs. Thamann would like to thank third grader Amy Blum for watching out for both her fellow third graders and younger students when they get hurt on the playground during recess.  She is very mothering and attentive, and we and the students appreciate her caring attitude.  Mrs. Raine thanks fifth graders Colleen Armstrong and Madison Todd for helping to decorate the Music Room for Christmas during the Open House.  Thanks girls—it looks great!

OPEN HOUSE:  Thank you to Tamara Anderson and the PTO officers who prepared a warm and welcoming reception for our visitors on the 28th.  Thank you to Sheila Sieder, who coordinated the 28 plus host parents who took our visiting families and children on a tour of our school.  Thank you to those 28 plus parents who were able to give the interesting details to these prospective parents.  Thank you to the students who were in the classrooms to explain activities not only to the parents but also to the students.  Thank you to the teachers for explaining the activities and the daily workings of their classes.  Finally, thank you to Deacon Glassmeyer for coming to help welcome our guests from Ss. Peter and Paul and other prospective families.  –Mrs. Adelmann

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!  Thanks to all who helped make our Open House a success.  We were expecting 42 families and were happily overwhelmed by 78 families!  Our tour guides did a fantastic job of making everyone feel welcome, and the students were excellent ambassadors of OLSH pride.  Thanks also to the entire faculty and staff for doing what they do best.  We are truly blessed to have a community of caring families.  Together we can continue to make Our Lady of the Sacred Heart a wonderful school for our children and our community.  –Sheila Sieder

ProKids DONATIONS:  We thank everyone who participated in this school-wide service project.  You have certainly guaranteed that the teens served by ProKids will have an extra-special Christmas.  We have packed up all donations and have them ready for pickup on Monday, December 4.

THANKSGIVING BASKETS UPDATE:  We were asked to assemble 20 baskets but were able to fill 30 for local needy families so that they could enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner.  We were able to supply several boxes of staple food items for distribution as well.  We appreciate the generosity that our school community has shown and thank you for your support of this historical food collection drive.  Many thanks to Ms. Leslie Willet for starting this program shortly after she started her teaching career here at OLSH more than 40 years ago!  We also thank Mrs. Patty High and Mrs. Lisa Maciulewicz who stepped in to oversee this project in Ms. Willet’s absence this year.  We should mention that, even though Ms. Willet is still recovering from back surgery, she and Terri DeAngelis pitched in by doing paperwork and some last-minute shopping with Lisa Schoenberger on the Monday before Thanksgiving.

PENNIES FOR PIES:  The original intention was to use money collected in this drive to purchase pies from Market Day; however, we had families donate 40 pies from our pie-selling contest (which was more than we needed).  We were able to purchase other needed items for our Student Government Thanksgiving food baskets with the $42 donated in our Pennies for Pies collection.  We truly appreciate your generosity and hope your family had a peaceful Thanksgiving.

MARKET DAY:  It’s not too late to place an order for our December sale and have a chance to win a $25 Market Day gift certificate.  All you need to do is place an order of at least $25 by noon on Friday, December 8.  Also, if you are a “FREEquent” Buyer, don’t forget to order so that you can receive your two FREE Gourmet Seasonings.  If you have any questions, please call Lisa Schoenberger (733-4707) or  Valerie Grein (891-5830).  Thanks for your support.  Happy Holidays!

AUTHOR VISIT:  Don’t miss the opportunity to have a book signed by Debbie Dadey and Marcia Thornton Jones.  You can still send in your order for a book that will be autographed by these two authors when they visit OLSH on February 1.  (The deadline has been extended to next Friday, December 8.)  Extra order forms are available in the school office.

CARDS FOR OUR SOLDIERS:  OLSH students made more than 275 Christmas cards for our soldiers overseas.  Mrs. Gorsuch took these cards to St. Joseph Home, where volunteers will include them in Christmas boxes to be mailed.

MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTIONS:  Please allow up to 12 weeks to start receiving your magazines ordered through the PTO Fall Major Fundraiser.  If your subscription has not started by the end of December, you may call American Publishers at (800) 284-9711 to check on your order.  (This number is also listed on the back of your pink order form.)  Thanks for your support.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR UPDATE:  Thanks to all the families who supported our Fall Scholastic Book Fair.  The totals are in, and we earned $970 in cash profit and books for our classrooms!!!  The cash will be used to purchase tests for A.R. books we already have in our library.  We also received many donations of books to the classrooms and the library.  Thank you!  A very special thanks to all our librarians who helped make the Book Fair such a success.  Special recognition and thanks go to Ann Hartke, who has continued to provide a tremendous amount of time and energy to our Book Fairs even though she no longer has a student at OLSH.  Congratulations to our Grand Prize winners Zach Janszen, William Eades, and Daniel Stroh, and to the 26 poster winners.

YAC:  Here’s your chance!   Tips on operating the scoreboard will be covered on Thursday, December 7, from 6:30 p.m. ‘til 7 p.m. in the gym.  We’ll include a discussion of rules with a basketball referee.

YAC JR. HIGH DANCE:  Don’t miss the YAC-sponsored dance for seventh and eighth graders tonight, Friday, December 1, from 7 p.m. ‘til 10 p.m. in the Activity Center.

FROM THE NURSE’S DESK:  A bacterial disease known as Shigellosis has been increasing in Hamilton County.  School-age children are particularly vulnerable to this disease due to inadequate hygiene skills and close contact with other children.  Because it is a highly infectious disease, you should be aware of how you, as parents, can assist your children in its prevention.  Once the bacteria are ingested, symptoms usually present in one to three days.  The average duration of illness is four to seven days.  For this reason, a Shigellosis infection can impact your child’s school attendance.  Shigellosis causes gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea.  Blood may or may not be present in the stool.  In some children, the symptoms may be mild and go unnoticed.  Since Shigellosis is spread through stool and mouth contact, handwashing (especially after using the restroom) is the key to preventing the spread of this disease.  Extra diligence is needed at this time.  Please make sure to follow up with your children to make sure they have washed their hands well.  Other recommendations include cleaning play area surfaces and toys with a disinfectant/sanitizer.  Keep your bathrooms clean and pay closer attention to toileting areas.  For more information, you can contact the Center for Disease Control (CDC) at http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dbmd/diseaseinfo/shigellosis_g.htm.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT:  Join Mrs. Becky Jones and OLSH’s Beginning and Advanced Band students at a Christmas Concert on Monday, December 18, in the Ursuline Academy Auditorium, beginning at 7 p.m.  Contact Mrs. Jones with any questions (683-8596 or dbjones1@fuse.net).
