UPDATE:  On Monday, October 23, Parish Council, School Commission, and Finance Committee called a special meeting to discuss educational options for our school.  The outcome of the meeting was as follows:  OLSH is not closing, and we will be accepting registrations as usual for the 2007-08 school year.  School families and parishioners will be kept abreast of event updates as they occur.

TIME CHANGE:  Daylight Saving Time ends officially at 2 a.m. on Sunday, October 29.  Remember to set your clocks BACK one hour before you go to bed on Saturday.  Remember also to change the batteries in your smoke detectors.

SCHOOL UNIFORM:  Tuesday, October 31, will be the last day (until April 1) that students are allowed to wear shorts as part of the school uniform.  Beginning Wednesday, November 1, all students must wear either long navy (grades 1-8) or khaki (grades 7 and 8) pants or the school jumper (grades 1-4), plaid skirt (grades 5 and 6), or plaid skort (grades 1-8).  Please refer to pages 23 and 24 of the Parent-Student Handbook for complete dress guidelines.

ALL SAINTS DAY:  Wednesday, November 1, is All Saints Day, a Holy Day of Obligation.  Masses at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart are on Tuesday, October 31, at 7:30 p.m. and on Wednesday, November 1, at 8:15 a.m. (All-School Mass).  Masses at Ss. Peter and Paul are noon and 7:30 p.m. on November 1.

HOTLINE:  The Hotline was tested this past Wednesday morning.  We received no negative feedback about missed calls.  Please call the school office if you have anything to report.

SCHOOL DIRECTORIES:  We hope you are all happy to have received your 2006-07 school directories.  A big thank you to Heather Von Lehmden, Lisa Schoenberger, and Gina Vonderhaar for their work on this project.

SERVICE PROJECTS:  Please check your youngest child’s weekly folder for several upcoming service projects…

ProKids:  We have chosen this agency as the recipient of our school-wide Advent service project. ProKids has a real need for gift items for teenagers who live in foster care.  The flier coming home today lists recommendations for donations and dates they will be gratefully accepted.

THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE:  We will be carrying on the tradition of filling Thanksgiving baskets for needy families in our community.  Please check with your youngest for a flier coming home today with information about the food we need to fill these baskets.  (May we request that all food items be newly purchased, fresh items.)  We have been asked to supply enough food to fill 20 baskets.  This means that we need 20 turkeys—one for each basket.  We’ve had a hard time in past years getting enough turkeys.  If you can donate a frozen turkey, please call the school office no later than Friday, November 10, to let us know that.  Non-perishable food items can be sent in to school at any time beginning this Monday, October 30; perishables (bread, butter, milk, eggs, etc.) can be brought/sent in on Friday, November 17, or on Monday, November 20.  Frozen turkeys can be sent in on Monday, November 20 by 9 a.m.  Baskets will be assembled and picked up after school on Monday, November 20.

We thank you in advance for your generosity in helping us with both these projects.

MARKET DAY:  November is Market Day Pie Month.  We will have two pie-related “activities” coming up.  One of these is “Pennies for Pies”.  We are having a penny collection (although other forms of currency are acceptable, too!) to see how many pies we, as a school, can purchase to donate for our Student Government Thanksgiving Food Drive (see article above).  You may send in your donation with your child; there will be a container at the school entrance beginning Monday, October 30, where your child may drop in any donations.  We will collect “pennies” until Wednesday, November 8.

We are also conducting a pie-selling contest.  For details, please see pie order forms coming home with every student today.  The winning classroom will enjoy a pie and ice cream party on Tuesday, November 21.  Questions?  Call Lisa Schoenberger (733-4707) or Valerie Grein (891-5830).  Thanks for your continued support!

BOOK FAIR:  Fall Book Fair is just around the corner!  Mark your calendars for the week of November 12.  Students will shop the Book Fair during their regular library times.  Parents are invited to join them or shop after Masses on Saturday and Sunday, November 11/12, November 18/19, and during conference times on Wednesday, November 15.  Proceeds from this Book Fair will be used to purchase teacher-requested books for classrooms and to purchase A.R. tests for books we currently have in the library.

GRANDPARENTS/SPECIAL PERSONS DAY:  Save the date of Tuesday, November 21, for our Grandparents/Special Persons Day.  Look for details and invitations to come home next Friday, November 3.

SANTA SHOP:  Believe it or not, the holiday season is fast approaching; and we are beginning to prepare for OLSH’s Santa Shop.  Sale dates will be Thursday, December 7, and Friday, December 8.  The Santa Shop offers our children the opportunity to purchase inexpensive holiday gifts for their family and friends.  All of the children look forward to this event each year.  Donations of holiday gift items or handcrafted treasures will truly be appreciated.  Individually wrapped Christmas candy is always a big hit!  If you are able to donate items, please drop them off in the school office marked “Santa Shop Donations”.  Thank you.

YEARBOOK:  We still need a volunteer to organize the first grade page in the 2006-07 yearbook.  This requires a minimum time commitment and can be done mainly from home on your computer.  Please contact Alison O’Neill at alisononeill@fuse.net if you would like to help.

VOLLEYBALL TRYOUTS/OPEN GYM:  Tryouts for eighth grade will be on Saturday, November 4, from 1 p.m. ‘til 2:30 p.m. and on Sunday, November 5, from 5 p.m. ‘til 6:30 p.m.  Open gym for sixth grade will be on Wednesday, November 1, from 6 p.m. ‘til 7 p.m. and for fifth grade on November 1 from 5 p.m. ‘til 6 p.m.  All other grades need not attend and will be contacted by their coaches regarding practices.  Any questions can be referred to Laurie Hoffman at 733-9380 or via email (lauriehoffman@fuse.net).
