LOOKING AHEAD:  There will be no school on Monday, October 10 so that our teachers may attend a retreat.

TERRA NOVA TESTS:  Students in grades 2, 4, 6, and 8 will be taking the Terra Nova/In View tests during the month of October.  The test results are used to analyze how well our curriculum meets the needs of student learning.  Your child's teacher will let her class know the test schedule.  A good breakfast and plenty of sleep will always give a child a good start on a test.

HOTLINE:  We will be testing the hotline on Wednesday, October 5 starting at 6 a.m.  If you are a volunteer caller, you will be receiving your packet today.

PET BLESSING:  Plan to join us on Wednesday, October 5, as we celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi (which actually is October 4) by having Fr. Jack bless your pets.   Bring the family dog/cat/snake(!)/other domesticated animal and meet your child at 1:20 p.m. at the church entrance.  If you don't have a pet or can't bring yours, your child can bring a photo or a stuffed animal to the blessing.  Your child may leave with you after the blessing--you should have returned to school the note indicating whether your child would be leaving after the blessing or staying until regular dismissal.  If your child participates in the Young Rembrandts Art Program, he can either stay at school or go home with you after the blessing and return at 2:30 p.m.

OLSH PTO MAJOR FUNDRAISER:  Kids First and Magazine Drive End of Sale prizes will be delivered and distributed to the students on Thursday, October 6.  If your child will be loaded down with products and prizes on Thursday, please make arrangements for his transportation home.  The winners of the Pig Pageant were 4-D's "Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle" for best-dressed pig and 7-H's "Hamlet" for best-named.  Congratulations and thanks again for your support of this fundraiser!

RECOGNIZING GOOD BEHAVIOR:  Twenty-four of our junior-high students earned a "limo lunch" from sales during the Magazine Drive.  They went to Skyline Chili in Reading on Wednesday, September 28.  The seventh-grade students' behavior was remarkable enough to impress an elderly customer, who bought them all ice cream!

LIBRARY CHALLENGE:  Your child should have brought home last week or is bringing home today information from the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County regarding the Public Library Challenge, a program they are sponsoring in partnership with the Cincinnati Zoo.  Please take time to look over this information, fill out the library card information requested, and return it to school NO LATER THAN THIS MONDAY, OCTOBER 3.  (If your child already has a library card, put his card number on top of the form.)  Our students could win a visit from the Cat Ambassador or Wings of Wonder programs from the Cincinnati Zoo.  If we get 100% participation, we will receive a Gold-level banner from the Public Library.  In addition, your child will receive half-price admission to the Zoo between October 1 and November 30 when he shows his red library card.

ENTERTAINMENT 2006 BOOKS:  Today your youngest child is bringing home one "Entertainment Book" for you to view.  This makes it easy to take the time to look at the book at home to see where you could be saving lots of money.  THESE ARE NOT FREE BOOKS!  If you would like to keep the book, just place a check (payable to OLSH) in the original envelope and send it to school no later than TUESDAY, OCTOBER 11.  If you choose not to buy the book, just place it back in the original envelope and return it to school no later than OCTOBER 11.  There is no obligation to buy, and we are not asking the students to sell these books!  This is a fundraiser for our school library.  Profits will help purchase more A.R. books and tests for the students, which will give them a larger selection of required reading material.  Thank you very much for your support!

HURRICANE RELIEF:  Thank you for your generosity toward the victims of Hurricane Katrina.  We sent a check for $1787 to Catholic Charities USA.  OLSH's Student Government contributed $1000 of that total amount.  We thank our Student Government for providing fundraisers that collected that amount of money.  All Student Government fundraisers for the 2005-06 school year will designate victims of Hurricane Katrina/Rita as recipients.

FAMILY OF GOD MEDALLION:  Several Girl Scouts from OLSH are working toward earning the Family of God Medallion.  One of the requirements of this award is service to church or school.  Third graders Lily Beck, Caroline Gallo, Taylor House, Elizabeth Stevenson, and Jennifer Sutor of Brownie Troop 8724 (led by moms Suzanne Beck, Nancy Sutor, and Theresa Wessinger) and fourth graders Colleen Armstrong, Carly Beckstedt, Sabrina Smith, Kristin Sutor, and Ellie Wessinger of Junior Troop 6754 (led by moms Mary Beth Armstrong, Nancy Sutor, and Theresa Wessinger) are working toward this goal.  Their project is the OLSH courtyard.  They have already worked two days weeding and cleaning up; in November, the Junior Troop will return to prepare the area for winter.  It looks great!  Kudos to these girls and moms.

CHAIRPERSONS STILL NEEDED:  PTO still needs a chairperson for both the Children's Christmas Shop (December 7-9) and the Spirit Day games (June 1).  Reminder--if we don't have a chairperson for these events, they will have to be canceled.  If you can volunteer, please call Heather VonLehmden (733-3337).

FINGERPRINTING:  In last week's newsletter, we notified chairpersons of all organizations that they are responsible for making sure all of their volunteers complete the requirements of the Archdiocese.  One of these requirements is that all volunteers view the Child Protection Decree video.  This video may be viewed every Thursday here at school at 1 p.m.   Please call the school office (733-5225) to make an appointment.  In addition to this, all volunteers must be fingerprinted (Ohio BCI).  If you have not lived in Ohio for the last five years, you must also have an FBI check.  Both the fingerprinting and the FBI check may be charged to OLSH Parish.  Fingerprinting sites are:  Archdiocese of Cincinnati (100 East Eighth Street, 8th floor), Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. 'til 4 p.m.; and St. John-West Chester (9080 Cincinnati-Dayton Road), Monday and Tuesday 5 p.m. 'til 7 p.m., Wednesday 10 a.m. 'til 7 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. 'til 11 a.m.

YEARBOOKS: Yearbooks are here!  If you ordered a 2004-05 yearbook, it will come home with your child today.  We ordered a few extra books; if you didn't order a yearbook and would like to have one now, send $13 to the school office in an envelope marked "Yearbook".  Make checks payable to "OLSH PTO"; we will send a book home with your child.  Direct any questions to Alison O'Neill (769-4853).

AFTER-SCHOOL TUTORING/HOMEWORK HELP:  Could your child benefit from tutoring?  Would extra explanation and practice increase his/her understanding of assignments/homework?  Mrs. Mary Jo Eggenberger offers after-school/evening tutoring and homework help.  If interested, please contact her at 563-2079 to schedule a day and time.  Group rates are available for two or three same-grade students.

NURSE'S OFFICE:  Volunteers for the Nurse's Office for Friday, October 7 are Kathy Mahoney (8 a.m. 'til 11 a.m.) and Leah Winkler (11 a.m. 'til 2 p.m.).  Thanks, moms!
