FIRST DAY:  Our first day went very smoothly.  We thank the students for their cooperation and the parents who got them to school on time and prepared to start the school year.

HELLO!  We welcome two new staff members for the 2005-06 school year.  Mrs. Julie Gorsuch will be teaching Computer class.  She will be here on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.  Ms. Amy Muche is our new Speech Language Pathologist, replacing Mrs. Mary Ennis.  She will be here on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  Welcome!

TRAFFIC PATTERN:  Please do not pass up cars that are lined up along the sidewalk in the morning to drop off children.  Students are exiting from both sides of vehicles in some cases, and we want morning drop-off to be as safe as possible.  Thank you.

ABSENCE LINE:  Please remember to call in your child's absence/tardy by 9 a.m.  Dial 852-9391 and leave the following information:  your child's name, homeroom, the reason for his absence/tardy, and with whom homework should be sent.  (This child does not have to be in the same class as your child--ideally, it would be someone who lives close to you so that picking up homework is not a problem.)

VOLUNTEERS:  Thank you, parents, for the generous response to volunteer at OLSH!  Please come to the school office and sign in before going to help in the classroom, cafeteria, etc.  If your child becomes ill or is injured, we need to know where to reach you.  We also need to know the number of people in the building for safety reason (i.e., fire drills, etc.).  Return to the office and sign out when you are finished.  A reminder:  the Archdiocese requires that all volunteers in a parochial school be fingerprinted.  If you have not been fingerprinted, please contact the Archdiocese at 421-3131 or St. John Church (West Chester) at 777-6433 to find out when fingerprinting can be done.

DEADLINES:  If you would like us to put information in this newsletter, please bring or send it to the office with your child no later than 9 a.m. on Thursday.  Moms will pack packets on Fridays after the 8:15 a.m. all-school Mass, and this newsletter needs to be ready to go in those packets.  Thanks!

MEET THE TEACHER NIGHTS: Plan to join us for Meet the Teacher Night(s).  If you have a student in grades 1 through 4, please come on Tuesday, August 30; if you have a student in grades 5 through 8, come on Wednesday, August 31.  Some of you will have the chance to come both nights!  Both sessions will begin in the church with a prayer by Fr. Jack, followed by introduction of the "specials" teachers.  You will then go to your children's classrooms to meet their teachers.  Stop in the cafeteria sometime during the evening to sign up as a volunteer for one (or more) of the many opportunities that our PTO has available.  You can also pick up an order form for Spiritwear, which will be on display.  In addition, check out the school apparel items available through our uniform exchange.  We hope to see all our parents there!

OVER FOR MORE NEWSLETTER INFO…

BAND:  Mrs. Becky Jones of The Music Staff will be our band instructor again this year.   Mrs. Jones will be here on Thursday, September 1 to talk with all fourth graders during their Music class about joining Beginning Band.  Practices will be held every Thursday during Music class beginning the following Thursday, September 8.  Advanced Band (grades 5-8) will meet for practice every Monday during lunch beginning Monday, September 12.

JURY DUTY:  Fr. Jack had been called to serve jury duty.  As a result, we welcome Fr. Pat Crone from St. Saviour Parish, who will be the celebrant for our all-school Masses on September 2, 9, and 16.

HELP OLSH PTO EARN UP TO $500!  OLSH PTO has been asked to participate in a market research study on Friday, September 9, with individual times scheduled from 2 p.m. 'til 5:30 p.m.  The study will take place in the OLSH Activity Center, and babysitting will be available.  You will spend 45 minutes tasting food products, filling out questionnaires, and perhaps be asked to do some other type of testing.  Please call Vicki Koppenhafer at 769-4318 to schedule a time.  Look for complete details on a separate flyer coming home in packets today.

AFTER-SCHOOL CARE:  As you know, we no longer have the services of the Powel Crosley YMCA at OLSH for after-school care.  The Blue Ash YMCA does offer an after-school program.  They are waiving their registration fee, and they will pick children up from OLSH and transport them to their facility in Blue Ash.  Please contact Mr. Dave Hennessey, School-Age Child Care Site Administrator, at the Blue Ash Branch YMCA (791-5000, ext. 2621) for further information.  We also have brochures available in the school office.  Parents--if you decide to take advantage of this service, please contact us in the school office (733-5225) to let us know if your child will be riding the YMCA van from school to the Y.
