Monday, May 29              MEMORIAL DAY—NO SCHOOL

EARLY DISMISSALS:  We have two early dismissals coming up.  On Thursday, June 1 (Spirit Day), students will be dismissed at 1:30 p.m.  The following school districts will provide bus transportation home on that day:  First Student and Princeton.  Students who normally ride Indian Hill, Kings, Lakota, Mason, or Sycamore buses will need to find alternate rides home on June 1.  On Friday, June 2 (final day of school), students will be dismissed at 9:30 a.m.  The following school districts will provide bus transportation home on that day:  First Student, Princeton, and Sycamore.  Students who normally ride Indian Hill, Kings, Lakota, or Mason buses will need to find alternate rides home on June 2.

PAWS (PAUSE) FOR PRAISE:  The following seventh graders have been nominated for a “Paws for Praise” award:  Ben Staley, nominated by Mrs. Wendy Schworer for being chivalrous; and Nick Pryse, Luke Shadley, and Ben Staley, nominated by Mrs. Cindy Creighton for being helpful with her stage props.  In addition, eighth grade teachers Mrs. Creighton and Mrs. Schworer do not want to see the following eighth graders who often show good Christian behavior in their daily lives leave OLSH without being recognized for that:  Sarah Bohlen, Tim Koppenhafer, Eric Leeker, Nathanial Martin, Jake McCabe, Colleen McDonough, Matt Mulderig, Meggie O’Brien, Mindy O’Brien, Zach Radcliff, and Zach Sand from 8-C; and Drew Fladung, Josh Fouchey, Eric Hanneken, Jessica James, Chris Kalthoff, Keith Kennedy, Jeff Marksberry, Alex Moorman, and Libby Prickel from 8-S.  Congratulation to all of these students—we hope you will continue to be shining examples of the type of behavior you know is right!

MATH KUDOS:  We have a large number of eighth graders who have tested into the higher levels of Math for their freshman year at their chosen high schools.  We feel that this is a reflection not only of these students’ abilities but also of the quality of the Math curriculum and teachers here at OLSH.  Congratulations, hardworking students and OLSH Math teachers!

SPIRIT DAY:  Spirit Day 2006 is Thursday, June 1.  You will receive two items pertaining to Spirit Day in your child’s weekly folder coming home today—a Spirit Day volunteer form and a Spirit Day lunch order envelope.  Regarding the lunch envelopes:  each child must turn in his own envelope; we prefer cash in the correct amount in each envelope, but you may write one check (made out to OLSH) for all your children and put it in one of their envelopes.  Just be sure to stick a note about the check in the other children’s envelopes so that we know their lunches have been paid for.  Eighth graders—we welcome you back for Spirit Day, especially if you wish to volunteer!  If returning eighth graders would like to order a lunch, send in to the school office an envelope with your order and money.  Please indicate number of slices and kind of pizza (cheese or pepperoni at $1 a slice) and drink (Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, or bottled water at 50 cents each).  Be sure to include your name on your envelope.

END-OF-YEAR SURVEY:  Starting Monday, May 22, teachers will have on their class web pages a survey which you may complete.  I, too, will have a survey on the Principal’s Page (which is under “School Info”).  There will be instructions on how to complete and submit these surveys.  These will take the place of the survey sent home at the end of the 2004-05 school year and will be available for parent completion for only one month, after which time they will be deactivated.   We thank you in advance for your input.  –Mrs. Adelmann

BIRTHDAY TREATS/REWARDS/HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS:  The news has been filled recently with articles regarding children’s health/weight issues.  Every school that participates in a federally funded lunch program must write and implement a “Wellness Policy”.  Suggestions for the Wellness Policy that I must write for OLSH consist of looking at our other school-based activities and how we use food for rewards, birthday treats, and holiday celebrations.  I plan to write our policy encouraging the use of non-food items for rewards, non-food and non-beverage items for birthday treats, and healthy food items for holiday celebrations.  If you have a concern about this and would like to give some input, please email me at adelmannb@olshschool.net.  Thank you.

“BUSY AS BEES” SUMMER PROGRAM:  Mrs. Rohlfs and Mrs. Baker will again hold their very popular summer readology program, “Busy As Bees”.  This is a program to help your child get excited about reading.  There are two three-day sessions:  “Bee a Chef”, which runs from July 11 through July 13; and “Bee a Toymaker”, which runs from July 18 through July 20.  Parents of students currently in grades one through three should look for a flyer/registration form in their child’s weekly folder today.  The program is also open to students currently in kindergarten.  We hope to see you there!

SUMMER TUTORING:  Mrs. Mary Jo Eggenberger, former teacher’s aide here at OLSH and current long-term sub for Mrs. Jody Pelzel, is offering summer tutoring for students entering grades 1 through 6.  If you think your child would benefit from Mrs. Eggenberger’s help, please call her at home after 3 p.m. (563-2079) or call the school office to get a message to her.

CAMPBELL’S SOUP LABEL WINNERS:  Our May out-of-uniform winners are:  Renee Finan (1-O); Henry Kuechly and Joey Pomeroy (2-R); Ellie Wessinger (4-D); Paige Brown (5-B); James Stall (6-O); Tess Sharkey (7-W); and Daniel Widmann (8-S).  We will pick our next winner in August.  Keep saving your labels.  Have a great summer!

FESTIVAL NEWS:  Continue to send in items for the OLSH Summer Festival Grocery Booth and Basket Booth.  All items can be sent in to school.  Make sure your child’s name and homeroom are on all items brought in for the Basket Booth so he/she may be entered into a drawing.  Call Lisa McCabe (Grocery Booth chairperson) at 755-0893 or Sue Kettler (Basket Booth chairperson) at 769-4583.

2006-07 CALENDAR:  An abbreviated calendar for the 2006-07 school year is being sent home today with your youngest.  A more detailed calendar will be included in family packets that will be available for two weekends in August prior to the start of the new school year.

FALL SPORTS SIGNUPS:  This is the final weekend to sign up for OLSH YAC fall sports (boys’ football, girls’ basketball, girls’ cheerleading, and OLSH/SPPS SAY soccer).  Signups will be held after all Masses this Saturday, May 20, and Sunday, May 21, in the Tiger Room of the Activity Center.  Contact Ken Hoffman at 733-9380 or at kdhoffman@fuse.net.

SPRING BAND CONCERT:  Join OLSH Band members and teacher Mrs. Becky Jones at their Spring Band Concert this coming Thursday, May 25, at 7 p.m. at Milford Main Middle School (behind St. Andrew’s Church on Main Street in Milford).  Questions?  Call Mrs. Jones at 683-8596.

YEARBOOK:  Please submit any sports team photos or candid shots of sports for inclusion in the 2005-06 yearbook.  Send photo prints through Ellen O’Neill (5-B) or email digital images to yearbook@olshschool.net.  We want to have as many teams represented as possible!

MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL:  Please arrange to come in to pick up any medications your child may have at school.  We will not send meds home with students; any medication left after June 2 will be disposed of.  Contact the school office (733-5225) if you are unsure if your child has medicine here.
