ABSENCE LINE:  Parents, please remember to call your child’s absence in to the absence line (852-9391), not the school line (733-5225).  Thank you.

IT’S A BOY!  Congratulations to Mrs. Jody Pelzel and her husband, Mark, who welcomed Gavin Nicholas to the world on Thursday, May 4.  Gavin weighed 8 lbs. 5 ozs.  Mother and baby are both doing fine!

PAWS (PAUSE) FOR PRAISE:  Mrs. O’Brien recognizes first grader Joey Speed and third grader Jennifer Sutor for their extra helpfulness, and cafeteria worker Mrs. Daniels appreciates fifth grader Sam Ficke’s offers to help clean up in the cafeteria.  We appreciate their Christian behavior!

HIGH ENERGY:  We often see a “natural” surge in energy this time of the school year.  Parents, please watch what your children are bringing to drink in their lunches.  Steer them away from those high-energy drinks like Vault!  Encourage them to make more healthful choices.  Thanks.

PARENT TEACHER REQUESTS:  According to the OLSH Parent Student Handbook, page 29, requests by parents for specific teachers were due by May 1.  We will certainly look at all requests, but the factors listed on page 29 are used for assigning students when there are two classes of a grade.

SPRING PICTURES:  The deadline for returning spring pictures was Friday, May 12.  If you still have money and/or unwanted picture packages at home, please be sure to return them to school with your child NO LATER THAN MONDAY, MAY 15.  Lifetouch will be making a pickup one day next week, and we’d like to hand over all pictures and money at that time.  Thank you.

FINE ARTS DAY:  Our OLSH students will present a patriotic concert on Thursday, May 18, at 12:45 p.m.  The concert will take place in the Activity Center.  We will start with the first grade and progress in grade order.  The fourth grade Beginning Band will perform in this concert, also.  (The fifth grade students are rehearsing for their play and will not perform in the concert.)  Students may wear uniform bottoms (skirts/skorts/shorts) with red, white, or blue tops or ones with a mixture of these colors or a patriotic theme.  No sleeveless tops allowed.  We invite parents/grandparents to this concert and to tour the school hallways after the concert to see the artwork on display there.  We hope to have lots of visitors join us as we celebrate our artistic talent!

FIFTH GRADE PLAY:  The fifth graders will present their Biblical play, Rescue in the Night—The Story of Daniel in the Lions’ Den, next Friday, May 19, at 9:30 a.m. in the Activity Center.  The performance will be repeated at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24, also in the Activity Center.  All are welcome!

EIGHTH GRADE PLAY:  The eighth graders will present The Wizard of Oz on Monday, May 22, from 1 p.m. ‘til 1:45 p.m. in the Activity Center.  (This date is a change from the original performance date of Friday, May 19.)  We hope to see lots of parents there and apologize for the date change.

WRITING STAR:  Eighth grader Meggie O’Brien’s poem, entitled “Dance Down the Street”, has been judged worthy of publication by Creative Communication, Inc.  Congratulations, Meggie!

VIETNAM MOVING WALL:  A half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall is touring the country and will be on display at the Reading Memorial Stadium over the Memorial Day weekend.  Opening ceremonies will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 26.  The Air Force Band of Flight will provide the music for the opening ceremonies, and our own Gina Rieman will lead us all in “God Bless America”.  Dennis Boland, a Reading native and OLSH graduate who was killed in action in Vietnam in December of 1969 and whose name is engraved on the Wall, will be honored.  In anticipation of this weekend

event, we are fortunate to have Mr. John Erby, president of the Vietnam Veterans Association and a Purple Heart recipient, coming to OLSH to speak to our students on Thursday, May 25.  He will address grades one through three at 1 p.m. and grades four through eight at 1:30 p.m.  We urge all parents, grandparents, or relatives who lived during these years and may even have served in Vietnam to talk with their children about this experience and encourage them to ask questions of Mr. Erby when he visits OLSH.  You are all welcome to come and listen to Mr. Erby.   We also suggest that you take the time over the Memorial Day weekend to visit the Wall while it is on display at the stadium.  It is quite an opportunity to pay respect to soldiers of all wars.

SUMMER TUTORING:  Would your child benefit from summer tutoring?  Whether to master concepts not fully understood during the school year or to maintain skills for the next school year, tutoring can be valuable time spent.  My name is Mary Jo Eggenberger.  As you may know, I have been a teacher’s aide/substitute teacher at OLSH for several years.  If you are interested in tutoring for your child (those entering grades 1-6), please feel free to call me at home (563-2079) after 3 p.m. or leave a message for me at the school office.  I will be happy to return your call.

LIBRARY:  As of May 12, students may no longer check books out of the library.  Please make sure all books are returned during your child’s library time this week and that all fines are paid.  Also, thank you to everyone who helped review books for the library this year.  Please return all books and reviews no later than next Friday, May 19.  If you have any questions, contact Alison O’Neill at 769-4853 or alisononeill@fuse.net.

SPIRITWEAR:  Please look for Spiritwear order forms coming home today.  All orders and money are due by Monday, May 22.  Make your check payable to “OLSH YAC” and send orders to the office marked “Spiritwear”.  PARENTS, PLEASE NOTE:  Please check to see what items your child will need to begin the school year next August.  If items are needed, your order must be placed now.  All orders will be placed over the summer, and delivery will be made to your child’s homeroom sometime during the first week of school.  If there are any questions, call Laura Benson at 984-6984.

OLSH SUMMER FESTIVAL:  Believe it or not, it is time to get ready for this year’s festival; and the Grocery Booth is asking for your help and generous donations.  We have broken down the list of items needed for the Grocery Booth as follows:  Grade 1—cleaning supplies; Grade 2—paper products; Grade 3—packaged food (i.e., pasta, rice, mac and cheese, etc.); Grade 4—baking goods (please, no chocolate—it melts!); Grades 5 and 7—cereal; Grade 6—snack foods; and Grade 8—canned goods.  Items can be sent in to school with your child.  We are also looking for volunteers to work the booth.  This is a great way to meet new people!  If you can donate two hours of your time, contact Lisa McCabe at 755-0893.

OLSH YAC FALL SPORTS SIGNUPS:  Signups will take place after all Masses on May 13/14 and May 20/21 in the Tiger Room of the Activity Center for the following sports (all grades are 2006-07):  boys’ football, grades 3 through 8; girls’ basketball, grades 3 through 8; girls’ cheerleading, grades 5 through 8.   We will also have signups for OLSH/SPPS club SAY soccer for current K through 7th grade (ages 6 through 13).  The cost is $35 per sport and $105 for football.   (Jerseys, if needed, cost an extra $30.)  There is a late fee assessed for late registrations (after May 21).  NO REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED THROUGH SCHOOL.  Questions?  Contact Ken Hoffman at 733-9380 or via email at kdhoffman@fuse.net.

READING SOCCER:  Any girls who will be in ninth grade next year and are interested in playing soccer at Reading High School should plan to attend a meeting on Monday, May 15, at 3 p.m. at the high school.

YOUTH WRITING CAMP:  The Ohio Writing Project is holding a Youth Writing Camp on the Oxford campus of Miami University this summer.  The camp is open to students entering grades five through eight.  We have flyers in the OLSH school office if your child is interested.

ALUMNI NEWS:  Eighth graders, keep us posted on what’s happening to you in high school!  We will be posting items of interest regarding OLSH alumni on the bulletin board near the junior high classrooms.  Please send items to the Parish or school office or email the information to us.  We’d love to hear what you (and all other alumni) are doing!
