LOOKING AHEAD:

Sunday, May 14             MOTHER’S DAY

FLOWER SALE:  Our annual Mother’s Day Flower Sale will take place next Friday, May 12.  Please see the flyer coming home today with your child for details about this sale.

PAWS (PAUSE) FOR PRAISE:  Mrs. O’Brien would like to thank third grader Taylor House for offering to help in the mornings before class.

THANK YOU:  Thank you to Mrs. Sheila Sieder, Mrs. Laura Benson, and Mrs. Tamara Anderson for their help on Wednesday, April 26, during the Kindergarten Visit.  Laura had Spiritwear out for new parents to view, Tamara introduced OLSH PTO, and all three moms were on hand to answer any questions new parents had.  It was a good way for parents to wait for their children while sharing some information, enjoying refreshments, and meeting each other.

SPRING PICTURES:  Don’t forget to turn in your money and/or unwanted spring pictures to the school office no later than next Friday, May 12.

SUMMER TUTORING:  Would your child benefit from summer tutoring?  Whether to master concepts not fully understood during the school year or to maintain skills for the next school year, tutoring can be valuable time spent.  My name is Mary Jo Eggenberger.  As you may know, I have been a teacher’s aide/substitute teacher at OLSH for several years.  If you are interested in tutoring for your child (those entering grades 1-6), please feel free to call me at home (563-2079) after 3 p.m. or leave a message for me at the school office.  I will be happy to return your call.

COURTYARD WORK:  You really should check out our beautiful courtyard!  Several of our students joined girls from Amity School in Deer Park last week to spruce up this area.  These girls are members of a Junior Girl Scout Troop who did this landscaping work as part of the service hours required for their Bronze Award.  The OLSH girls are:  Colleen Armstrong, Carly Beckstedt, Christy Kennedy, Olivia Peter, Sabrina Smith, Kristin Sutor, and Ellie Wessinger.  The girls from Amity School who joined them are:  Amanda Fahey, McCartney Johnson, Samantha Moses, Jessica Sharpshair, and Marissa Wallet.  We thank leaders Mary Beth Armstrong, Nancy Sutor, and Theresa Wessinger, along with Mr. Armstrong and eighth grader Lindsey Rinderle (who just showed up and pitched in!).  The work was completed in time for First Communion on April 30, and several attendees remarked on the beauty of the flowerbeds.

FINE ARTS DAY:  Fine Arts Day 2006 will be celebrated on Thursday, May 18.  Our students will present a patriotic-themed concert in the Activity Center, beginning at 12:45 p.m.  It will last about one hour.  Student artwork will be on display in the school and Activity Center hallways.  Plan to attend and celebrate our artistic talent!

LIBRARY NEWS:  Next week will be the last week that students may check books out of the library.  Please make sure your children are current with regard to the library (all books returned and fines paid).

We’d like to recognize the work done by Pam Kennedy, Vicki Koppenhafer, and Bill Moulliet (grandfather of William and Jessica Eades), who have entered over 1700 books into the OLSH library system during this school year.  This is quite a feat, considering that it takes between five and ten minutes to enter each new book.  Special recognition goes out to Bill Moulliet, who comes to work in the OLSH library every Tuesday morning at 7:45 a.m. and leaves at 2:15 p.m.  We also have many parents who volunteer on a weekly basis during your children’s class time.  Our library would not run without our volunteers.  Thank you all.

MARKET DAY:  Congratulations to Linda Hayes (a frequent customer), winner of our spiral-sliced ham.  May is customer appreciation month.  Everyone who orders in May will receive a complimentary item.  You may order online at www.marketday.com (it’s very easy and quick); send your order in through school; or call Lisa Schoenberger (733-4707) or Valerie Grein (891-5830) by Thursday, May 11.  Also, there’s no need to stock up on all your Market Day favorites—we will be having summer sales with pickups on June 7, July 12, and August 16!

EIGHTH GRADE VIDEO:  The eighth grade video is almost ready.  If you are interested in purchasing a video, please send your money ($25) in to Monica Brandstetter (c/o Jonathan in 8-C) by next Friday, May 12.  Make checks payable to Monica Brandstetter.  Thank you.

YEARBOOK:  Attention, parents of second graders—This year, our whole Yearbook page will be dedicated to First Communion.  Please send any photos you would like to offer for inclusion in the Yearbook to Alison O’Neill, c/o Ellen O’Neill in 5-B.  You can email any digital images to yearbook@olshschool.net.

MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTIONS:  You can now order and renew magazine subscriptions online all year ‘round, with 40% of the purchase price going to support our school.  Go to our school website (www.olshschool.net) and click on the following:  fundraising—magazine orders—magazine store—shop online—type in school code W03315—enter the student’s name—start shopping.  Items purchased now under a student’s name will count for the end-of-sale prizes for our PTO Fall Major Fundraiser 2006.  (Turn-in day prizes during the sale in the fall must be submitted on specific turn-in days.)  If you have questions, call Pam Kennedy at 984-4597 or email her at pendres@cinci.rr.com.

NURSE”S OFFICE:  Volunteers for the Nurse’s Office for Friday, May 12, are Shari Torbeck (8 a.m. ‘til 11 a.m.) and Melissa Fahr (11 a.m. ‘til 2 p.m.).  Thanks, moms!
