FIRST COMMUNION:  We congratulate our second graders and those in CCD who will make their First Communion this Sunday.  Our second-grade teachers (Mrs. Rohlfs, Mrs. Pelzel, and Mrs. Eggenberger), CCD instructor Mrs. Gorsuch, and the students have worked hard to get ready for this big day.  We want them to know they will be in our prayers as they receive this sacrament on Sunday.  (Please note that the second graders will not be in school on Monday, May 1.)

MAY CROWNING:  We invite you to join us on Friday, May 5, for our 8:15 a.m. all-school Mass followed by our May Crowning ceremony honoring the Mother of Jesus.  Eighth grader Hannah Vogt will crown Mary and will be attended by her first-grade buddy, Claudia Garcia, and fellow eighth graders Sarah Bohlen, Meggie O’Brien, and Mindy O’Brien.  It is always a beautiful ceremony and a wonderful way to dedicate the month of May to Our Blessed Mother.   Reminder--If you did not order a flower for May Crowning, remember to bring one in on Friday.  If you did order a flower, we will have it here for you.

THANK YOU:  To students, faculty, staff, parents, and friends—thank you, thank you, thank you!  The collection for “Nica” was once again a success—the total amount donated by OLSH was $1521.50.  I’m sure that Sr. Margie is smiling down on all of you for all your efforts and your generosity.  I will be giving the checks to Sr. Helen Prejean this Saturday, since the Board of the Friends of Batahola is meeting in Cincinnati this weekend.  Again—thank you for all you’ve given to my sister’s mission.  God bless you all!   --Mrs. Jan Otten

PAWS (PAUSE) FOR PRAISE:  Recognition from Mrs. O’Brien goes to third grader Daniel Vidourek and fourth grader Jared Meyer for their self-motivated helpfulness.  Mrs. Schworer would like to recognize seventh grader Rachel Grein for always doing what’s expected of her (and more!) and seventh grader Alex Daniels for being extra polite and gentlemanly.  We appreciate students who act the way they know they should.

While we’re on this subject, we want all of our students to know that we are proud of the way they handled themselves this past Tuesday when Carson Palmer came to visit.  The representatives of the American Dairy Association commented (positively) on our students’ behavior.  We hope you were able to catch at least one of the newscasts covering Mr. Palmer’s visit to OLSH.  It was a day to remember.  Thank you to sixth grader Patrick Goddard, winner of the contest to have Carson Palmer visit our school.

ANGEL EDUCATORS:  Two of our junior high teachers, Mrs. Patty High and Mrs. Cindy Creighton, were honored this past Tuesday, April 25, at an Angel Educator Award Program held at Mt. Notre Dame High School.  Both teachers were nominated by former students for the impact they made in those students’ lives.  This is the second time Mrs. Creighton has received this award.  We are proud of them both!

SPRING PORTRAITS:  Today your child will be bringing home his/her spring portrait.  (Portrait packages have been printed only for students photographed on April 12; there are no retakes for spring pictures.)  If you do not want the pictures, please return them to school immediately.  If you wish to buy all or part of your picture package, see the instructions included in the package.   Please return all unwanted pictures and/or money by Friday, May 12.  We appreciate your cooperation.

PTO:  The final PTO meeting for the 2005-06 school year will be held on Wednesday, May 10, at 7 p.m. in the lower level of the Parish Center.  Any items you would like to add to the agenda should be submitted to Jamie Brenner no later than Thursday, May 4.  Thank you.

VARIETY SHOW T-SHIRTS:  We have the 2005-06 Variety Show t-shirts available.  Please look for an order form coming home today with your youngest.  The deadline for ordering these shirts is next Friday, May 5.

2006-07 SCHOOL DIRECTORIES:  We are planning to print the directory for next school year over the summer.  Please look for the flyer/order form coming home today and note the due date of May 22.  We appreciate your cooperation in our effort to make this directory available to you as soon as possible in the coming school year.

LIBRARY:  The last week that students may check out library books is the week of May 8 so that we may have a few weeks before school dismisses for the summer to make sure all books have been returned and all fines have been paid.

Thank you to everyone who helped review books for the library this year.  Please return all outstanding OLSH library books and reviews no later than Friday, May 19.  If you have any questions, contact Alison O’Neill at 769-4853 or at alisononeill@fuse.net.  Again, thank you to all of the volunteers who have helped with this project.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR UPDATE:  Thanks to all the families who supported our Spring Scholastic Book Fair.  The totals are in, and we earned $900 in cash profit and books for our classrooms!!!  The cash will be used to purchase A.R. tests for the A.R. books we already have in our library.  We also received many donations of books to the classrooms and the library—thank you!  A very special thanks to all our librarians who helped make the Book Fair such a success.  Special recognition and thanks go to Ann Hartke, who has continued to provide a tremendous amount of time and energy to our Book Fairs, even though she no longer has a student at OLSH.  Congratulations to our Grand Prize winners Kelley Glassmeyer, Kelly Schoenberger, and Patrick Bennett and to the 35 poster winners.  Good news—Sandy Mitsch and Debbie Stroh have volunteered to co-chair the Book Fairs for the 2006-07 school year!

TYSON A+ LABELS:  Please continue to clip and turn in Tyson A+ labels.  We receive 24 cents for each label, which can add up very quickly.  Tyson A+ labels can be deposited in the Campbell’s soup bins along with your Campbell’s soup labels and General Mills Box Tops for Education.  Thank you.

EIGHTH GRADE VIDEO:  The work on the video is almost complete.  Thanks to everyone who has helped out with this project.  A form was sent home the week of April 24; this form needs to be returned.  If you are interested in purchasing an eighth grade video (DVD), the cost is $25.  Please make checks out to Monica Brandstetter and send them to her c/o Jonathan in 8-C no later than next Friday, May 5.

BAND CONCERT:  Mrs. Becky Jones and The Music Staff will present their Spring Band Concerts to be held on Thursday, May 25, at the Milford Main Middle School (behind St. Andrew’s Church) on Main Street in Milford.  The Beginners Band concert starts at 7 p.m., followed by Advanced Band at 7:45 p.m.  Mrs. Jones teaches our Band students here at OLSH—all are welcome to come and hear them perform!

SOCKLOCKER:  There is a new sock out there that promises to solve our student uniform sock appearance problem!  A number of Cincinnati schools are using these socks.  Parents, if you are interested, please visit www.socklocker.com.

MOELLER VOLLEYBALL:  Join us for Grade School Night!  See some of the best high school volleyball in the state when Moeller plays St. X on Tuesday, May 2 at Moeller.  The freshmen play at 5 p.m., JV at 6 p.m., and varsity at 7 p.m.  Admission is free for all grade school students.

CHEERLEADING TRYOUTS:  Reading High School cheerleading tryouts will take place on Friday, May 26, at 4 p.m. in the Reading High School gym.  Clinics will be held on Tuesday, May 23, and on Thursday, May 25 from 3:30 p.m. ‘til 5 p.m., also in the school gym.  Please contact Julie Rostron, RHS varsity cheerleading coach, at 842-5139 or 205-6936.  We have packets of information in the OLSH school office; these packets include a teacher recommendation form that must be returned to our office by May 12.

HIGH SCHOOL DECISIONS:  Parents of eighth graders, please remember to advise the school office by note or phone call (733-5225) of the high school your child will be attending next year.  If you have a Record Release form, please send it in.  Thanks!
