BOOK FAIR:  The spring Book Fair will be open after all Masses this Saturday and Sunday, April 1 and 2, in room 7 of the school.  Stop in and check out the Easter books, A.R. books, cookbooks, and much more!  Proceeds from this Fair will be used to purchase A.R. tests for books we have in the school library and to purchase books that teachers have requested for their classroom libraries.

“SPRING” FORWARD:  Remember to set your clocks ahead one hour before you go to bed on Saturday, April 1 (no, this is not an April Fool’s joke!), as Daylight Saving Time starts on Sunday, April 2.

PRAYER SERVICE/BINGO NIGHT:  All families are invited to join us this Thursday, April 6, at 7 p.m. for our Prayer Service/Bingo Night.  We will start out in church and move to the Community Room.  Snacks are provided.  If you haven’t signed up yet, please see the flyer coming home today.  See you there!

PAWS (PAUSE) FOR PRAISE:  We congratulate second grader Keith Chachoff for demonstrating Christian behavior by helping Mr. Mueller clean cafeteria tables last week.  Thank you, Keith!

UNIFORMS:  Monday, April 3, is the first day OLSH students may wear shorts as part of their school uniform.  Please make sure that your child’s (especially the girls’) shorts are the appropriate (fingertip) length.  Refer to pages 23 through 25 for further uniform regulations.  This is also a good time to check that your child has socks that cover the anklebone.  Warning:  Students wearing sweatshirts that are torn, ripped, or cut off in any way will no longer be allowed to wear them during the school day.  Take pride in your OLSH uniform and in how you look (and behave) while wearing it!

RUMORS:  Silly rumors that are myths…here are the facts—

We will be having Music, P.E., and Art classes next year.

Mrs. Baker will not be teaching Music after school next year.

Please share rumors with me so that I can give you accurate information immediately.  It’s silly and detrimental to OLSH to have false information going around.  “A lie can make it halfway around the world before the truth has time to put its boots on.”  (Mark Twain and Winston Churchill)   ---Mrs. Adelmann

LENTEN RAFFLE:  Congratulations to the following winners of last week’s raffles:  Noah Armstrong (spring basket); Grace Kallenberg (Mrs. Baker’s chocolate chip cookies); Grant Garbacik (movie night bag); Ali Kessling and Stephanie Lyons (pizza and pop lunch for each, including one friend each); and Sydney Blum, Molly Ernstes, Grant Garbacik, Chris Meyer, Meggie O’Brien, and Caleb VonLehmden (out-of-uniform passes).  This week’s raffle items are:  Rabble the Dog (a cute stuffed dog named Rabble and a small photo album); a movie night basket (a movie from Blockbuster and treats to go with it, donated by Mrs. Gorsuch); an ice cream sundae party (for two winners and three friends each, donated by Mrs. Peter); bracelet making (two winners and a friend each will make bracelets with the help of some eighth graders); and out-of-uniform passes.   As usual, all raffle tickets are 25 cents each or five for $1 and are sold every school day before 7:45 a.m. in Ms. Schafer’s homeroom.  All proceeds benefit our Nicaragua fund.

SCHOOL SECURITY:  I just wanted to update parents regarding training that key staff personnel have taken and are going through for dealing with disaster emergencies and crisis management.  The Archdiocese and Cincinnati Public Schools, along with multiple public safety agencies, received an Emergency Response and Crisis Management Grant from Homeland Security funding.  So far, a team of teachers and I have been trained in the following:  School Incident Response Team, National Incident Management System, and Threat and Vulnerability Assessment.  Another group of faculty and staff will be trained in these areas on Tuesday, April 4.  The first team has done a preliminary school assessment, and on April 5 a consulting group will be conducting the final Threat and Vulnerability Assessment with my team.  On April 6, we will then take the following:  Emergency Management Planning and Community Emergency Response Training.  On April 20, we will take Weapons of Mass Destruction/HAZMAT training.  Further training (during the 2006-07 school year) will include a Tabletop Drill and a Full-Scale Incident Drill.  I hope we will never need to put this training to use, but we do need to be prepared.  ---Mrs. Adelmann

PAY ATTENTION:  There were two incidents reported this past week of strangers in cars on OLSH grounds.  In both instances, the alert moms took down license plate numbers.  Please watch for: a black Saturn Ion with Ohio plate #EX38PU, seen hanging around the parking lot during Tuesday morning drop-off; and a black Cadillac with tinted windows, Ohio plate #EM06NY, seen after school on Wednesday cruising the lot.  In this instance, a man got out of the car and stood near the Learning Center looking down into the woods toward the lower soccer fields where practice was taking place.  The Reading police were notified in both of these cases.  If you notice anything/anyone suspicious, please call the Reading police at 733-4122 (immediately from your cell phone, if possible).  We would appreciate being advised, also.

OLSH FISH FRY:  The two remaining Fish Fry Fridays are tonight (March 31) and next Friday (April 7) from 4:30 p.m. ‘til 7 p.m.  Plan on attending for great food and good company.  Everyone is welcome!

MARKET DAY:  Are you planning an Easter dinner?  A First Communion Party?  Any get-together?  Do you want a chance to win a spiral-sliced ham valued at $27 to $42 (based on weight)?  Place an order of at least $25 by Friday, April 7, to be eligible.  Order forms were sent home last Friday with your youngest.  You may send in your completed order form through school, order online at www.marketday.com, or call Lisa Schoenberger (733-4707) or Valerie Grein (891-5830).  The drawing will be held on April 12 (pickup day).  Thank you for helping us reach a record number of 131 customers at our March sale!  Our Tally Rally helped us realize a profit of $547.81!

PICTURE DAY:  We could still use one more volunteer to help out on Picture Day (Wednesday, April 12).  Julie Curry has already volunteered (thank you, Julie!).  Please call the school office if you are able to work with Julie on that day.  Thanks.

YEARBOOK:  Orders must be received by April 14 if you want a 2005-06 yearbook.  The number of yearbooks we order from the publisher will be based on the number of orders received by April 14.  We will have few (if any) extra copies to sell next year.  Please contact the office if you need an extra order form.

5K RUN:  The Drop Inn Center is hosting A Celebration of Life and Hope on April 30.  This event includes a 5K Run/Walk in loving memory of Ashley Merritt, baby sister of first grader Chase Merritt.  Just a little history…the Drop Inn Center was founded by Buddy Gray at its present location in 1978.  It is located in Over-the-Rhine and is the largest homeless shelter in Cincinnati and the second largest in the state of Ohio.  It provides many services for homeless men and women, including emergency shelter, food, clothing, medical services, a Substance Abuse Recovery Program, transitional housing, and advocacy.  Please watch for a flyer coming home with your children in the next week or so that includes further information about this event and volunteer opportunities associated with it.

READING LITTER CLEANUP DAY:  Again this year, the City of Reading will sponsor the Reading Litter Cleanup Day.  The event this year will be coordinated as part of the “Keep Cincinnati Beautiful Great American Cleanup” happening throughout the Greater Cincinnati area.  Reading Litter Cleanup Day is planned for Saturday, April 22.  Volunteers will report to Koenig Park at 10 a.m., where plastic bags and rubber gloves will be distributed.  Participation by schools, parent groups, community service organizations, Scouts, and citizens is encouraged.  Contact Carol Bullock-Carpenter, Coordinator of the event, at 733-4857 for further information or to sign up.

NURSE’S OFFICE:  Volunteers for the Nurse’s Office for Friday, April 7, are Shari Torbeck (8 a.m. ‘til 11 a.m.) and Janice Miller (11 a.m. ‘til 2 p.m.).  Thanks, moms!
