CONFIRMATION:  Remember our eighth graders as they are confirmed this Sunday at 3 p.m.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS:  Plan to join us during Lent as we pray the Stations of the Cross.  With the help of our eighth graders, all classes have made large posters of the Stations that have been placed around the school building.  On Friday, March 10 and March 24, we will begin in church and proceed around the school hallways to pray the Stations by each homeroom door.  On Friday, March 17 and April 7, the Stations of the Cross will be said in church.  On Friday, March 31, our sixth graders will perform “Shadow Stations” in the Activity Center; our eighth graders will perform the Living Stations on Holy Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in the church.  All Friday Stations of the Cross will begin at 1:30 p.m.  The Living Stations will also be performed on Tuesday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the church.

PAWS (PAUSE) FOR PRAISE:  Congratulations to the following students who have exemplified Christian behavior recently:  Sydney Burwinkel (1-O), for immediate response to directions given by Mrs. O’Brien with no reminders needed; Catherine Fahr, Matthew Hildebrandt, Olivia Kettler, Henry Kuechly, Kirsten Lucas, Joey Pomeroy, Ben Sieder, and Sydney Zeuch (all in 2-R), for their extra help in Mrs. Rohlfs’ classroom; Taylor House and Zoe Craig (3-P) for helping out friends in need; Matt McFarland, Maddie Rinderle, Sam Sieder, and Dylan Thomas (all in 3-P), for giving up their recess to help Mrs. Peter; James Stall (6-O), who always shows his good manners; and Jonathan Brandstetter (8-C), for being a good citizen and helping in the Computer Lab.

SCHOLARSHIP:  Congratulations to eighth grader Amanda Eagan, who was awarded a four-year partial, renewable scholarship to St. Ursula Academy.

HOOPS FOR HEART UPDATE:  As of March 2, the total amount of money raised for the American Heart Association through their “Hoops for Heart” Program (which took place here at OLSH during the week of February 13) was $3367.  We appreciate the OLSH school community’s support of this worthwhile program, which benefits so many!

FAMILY OF GOD MEDAL:  Several OLSH third and fourth grade girls have earned the “Family of God” medal.  The Family of God program is an official religious recognition program of the U.S. Roman Catholic Church for girls involved in Girl Scouts USA.  Its purpose is to focus on the presence of God in our lives within the family setting and within the Catholic Christian community (God’s “family”); it requires a significant commitment from each participant and takes an average of four months to complete.  The goals of the program are to help each Girl Scout develop:  an appreciation for each unique individual; an appreciation for the glory and wonder of all life created by God; an understanding of the family unit and each individual’s role; an understanding of the parish family and wonders of God’s world; an ability to contribute to her family, community, and church; and an understanding of her own blessings and talents and how to share them with others.  One of the projects these girls and their leaders took on was the weeding and cleaning up of our courtyard in September and preparing the area for winter in November.  Congratulations to third graders Lily Beck, Caroline Gallo, Elizabeth Stevenson, and Jennifer Sutor and to fourth graders Colleen Armstrong, Carly Beckstedt, Kristin Sutor, and Ellie Wessinger.  Their leaders are Mary Beth Armstrong, Suzanne Beck, Nancy Sutor, and Theresa Wessinger.  The girls will be recognized at the 8:15 a.m. all-school Mass on Friday, March 10.

POWER OF THE PEN:  The following eighth graders have advanced to the second (regional) round of competition to be held on Saturday, April 8, at Sycamore Junior High School:  Jonathan Brandstetter, Nick Kallenberg, and Hannah Vogt.  Congratulations to these excellent writers!

LENTEN RAFFLES:  For more than ten years, the OLSH school community has raised money during Lent in memory of Sr. Margie Navarro (the sister of former Auxiliary Clerk Jan Otten), who devoted almost 20 years of her life to the development of the Batahola Mission near Managua, Nicaragua.  Our contributions have enabled the people of that area to build homes and have provided scholarships for area students to complete higher studies.  The mission has grown into a true oasis in a community which knows great poverty.  This Lent, we would like to continue to donate to the center by having raffles of items donated by teachers and our eighth graders.  Raffle tickets (25 cents each or five for $1) can be purchased before 7:45 a.m. in Ms. Schafer’s homeroom. Different raffles will be held each week during Lent.  Ticket prices will always be the same, and winners of each week’s raffles will be announced during song practice on Wednesdays.  The raffles for the week of March 6 include:  a St. Patrick’s Day luncheon (one winner and a friend will enjoy a luncheon on Friday, March 17, hosted by none other than our own favorite leprechaun, Mrs. O’Brien!); Moeller t-shirts (two winners will each win a t-shirt donated by Mrs. Osborne); a candy basket (donated by Mrs. Schworer and Mrs. Eggenberger); a manicure (two winners and a friend each will experience a relaxing manicure with refreshments donated by our eighth grade); and an out-of-uniform pass.   Students can also donate cash—each classroom has its own donation jar.  The jars are brought to song practice on Wednesday mornings and added to the all-school jar.  We thank you in advance for your generosity.

PASSPORT NIGHT:  Plan to bring the whole family to Passport Night next Thursday, March 9. The teachers and your children have worked really hard to ensure that the evening will be fun and educational.   Parents must accompany their children--students may not be dropped off unsupervised.

REGISTRATION:  Registration of new students and re-registration of currently enrolled students (along with the registration fee of $200 per child/$400 per family of two or more children) are due by Tuesday, March 14.  Classes will be arranged according to the number of students registered by that time.  Unregistered and new students will continue to be accepted if space is available.

WORM BIN WORKSHOP:  There is a flyer coming home today to families of second through fifth graders about a recycling program using red worms and microorganisms.  Please check this flyer and return the cut-off portion by Friday, March 17, to register for this informative evening to be held here at OLSH on Thursday, March 30.

VARIETY SHOW:  This is a reminder that, due to a volleyball tournament, the date and time of OLSH’s Variety Show has been changed from the date originally published in our school calendar.  The Variety Show will be held on Monday, March 13, at 6:30 p.m.  The mandatory dress rehearsal is Tuesday, March 7, from 2:30 p.m. ‘til 4:15 p.m. in the Activity Center.  Parents may leave with their children after their act has rehearsed, or they may pick up their children at 4:15 p.m.  Any questions can be directed to Tamara Anderson at 733-3077.   Anyone who would like to make hors d’oeuvres for the evening (whether or not your child will be participating in the Variety Show) should contact Heather VonLehmden at 733-3337.

FISH FRY NEWS:  The OLSH Annual Fish Fry Fridays begin on March 24 and will be held again on March 31 and April 7.  Volunteers are needed—we need approximately 40 workers each night for a successful Fish Fry.  There are three shifts from which to choose:  3 p.m. ‘til 5 p.m. (set-up); 5 p.m. ‘til 7 p.m.; and 7 p.m. ‘til 9 p.m. (clean-up).  Students who volunteer and work their shift will receive an out-of-uniform pass.  (Students in grades one through five must have a parent working with them.)  If you can’t work, please volunteer to donate desserts (pies, cupcakes, brownies, cookies, etc.).  We would like students in grades one through three to bring desserts on March 24, students in grades four and five to bring desserts on March 31, and students in grades six, seven and eight to bring desserts on April 7.  Desserts can be dropped off in the Tiger Room after 10 a.m. on each day of the Fish Fry, or call Mary Beth Armstrong (793-4574) to make other arrangements.  Please see the flyer coming home today and respond by March 10.  Thank you!

MARKET DAY:  Please continue to send in your signed Market Day order sheets.  We ask that you send in the entire order sheet (not just the signed back page), especially if you are placing an order!  We have received several torn-off back pages that indicate a number of items ordered; but, without the entire order form, we have no idea what your ordered items are.  Call Lisa Schoenberger (733-4707) with questions.

YEARBOOK:  2005-06 yearbook order forms are coming home today.  Yearbooks are $14 if purchased prior to April 14; yearbooks purchased after April 14 will be $15.  Call Alison O’Neill (769-4853) with questions.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY DANCE:  Mark your calendars for the sixth annual OLSH St. Patrick’s Day Dance to be held this year on Saturday, March 11, from 8 p.m. ‘til 1 a.m. in the Activity Center.  You must be 21 to attend; ticket donation is $15.  Music this year will be provided by the Bentwood Rockers.  For further information, contact any YAC Board member or Ed Riordan at 769-3893 or via email at eriordan@zoomtown.com.

NURSE’S OFFICE:  Volunteers for the Nurse’s Office for Friday, March 10, are Samantha Blum (8 a.m. ‘til 11 a.m.) and Gina Prickel (11 a.m. ‘til 2 p.m.).  Thanks, moms!
