THANKSGIVING BASKETS:  Please remember to send in your donations for the Student Government Thanksgiving baskets this coming Monday, November 21.  Each year, this food collection benefits local needy families.  In addition to those items requested from each homeroom, we will gratefully accept donations of pumpkin pies and 12-15-pound turkeys.  If you would like to donate staples (sugar, salt, flour, coffee, tea, cereal, cake mixes, soups, pasta), we would accept those also.  We appreciate the generosity our school community has shown in the past and hope to continue this giving tradition.  We thank you in advance for your support of what has historically been a very successful and generous collection.

PICTURE RETAKES:  Lifetouch will be here on Monday, November 21, for Fall picture retakes.  If your child was here on October 13 and will have his picture retaken on Monday, please be sure to send the original picture package with him on that day so that the photographer can retrieve information from the bar code on the package.  Lifetouch will reprint the same package you ordered originally.  If your child was absent on October 13, he should bring the completed retake order envelope (sent home last Friday) with payment on Monday.

PAWS FOR PRAISE:  We omitted a student’s name last week when we applauded students for exemplary behavior. Patrick Bennett should have been included in the list of students for the month of October.  Congratulations, Patrick.

VOLUNTEER NEEDED:  Would anyone like to do the conference scheduling for next year?  One school we heard about had a mom who set up a spreadsheet on her computer; anyone who wanted a conference called her, and she filled in the slots.  Parents were given one day between the hours of 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. to call.  We could also have early signups at Meet the Teacher Night with a parent volunteer as monitor.   Mrs. Adelmann has done the scheduling for eleven years, spending an entire day scheduling, writing out confirmation slips, and then distributing the confirmations to go home. (Now you can understand the occasional mistake!)  It’s really fun to fit all families with more than one child into sequential time slots!  Please send a note or email Mrs. Adelmann adelmannb@olshschool.net) if you are interested in handling this job.

POWER OF THE PEN:  The Power of the Pen writing competition is open to all interested seventh- and eighth-grade students.  Practice sessions will be held on Wednesdays from 2:30 p.m. ‘til 3:30 p.m. with Mrs. Creighton.  (Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, the next session will be on Wednesday, November 30.)  A panel of judges will determine the top six seventh-grade writers and the top six eighth-grade writers from OLSH; these twelve students will compete in the district competition on February 11, 2006, with the opportunity to advance to regional and state levels.

CARDS FOR SERVICEMEN AND WOMEN:  OLSH students spent part of their school day recently making cards for our servicemen and women.  A total of 275 notes full of thanks were dropped off at St. Joseph to be included in holiday boxes being mailed to our soldiers serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Korea.  According to an e-mail from one soldier,  cards made by other schoolchildren were so appreciated by our troops that the notes were in shreds from being opened and re-read so many times.  They are extremely grateful!

COMPUTER CLASS HAPPENINGS:  Perhaps parents who came for conferences last Thursday and this past Tuesday stopped by the school entrance hallway to talk with Mrs. Julie Gorsuch, our computer teacher, and see what our fifth and sixth graders have been doing in Computer class.  Both grades have made Powerpoint presentations (a Math theme in the fifth grade and Middle Ages theme in the sixth), which Mrs. Gorsuch was showcasing during conferences.  If parents would like to have their child’s presentation, please email Mrs.Gorsuch at gorsuch_j@olshschool.net by December 2; she will forward it to you.

SCRIP CLARIFICATION:  Last week, we sent home information on the new guidelines for designating Scrip profits.  You can designate your earned profits to be used in several ways:  a) toward the tuition of your family or another OLSH school family; b) toward the parish Educational Grant Fund (tuition assistance for parish families); or c) toward the General Fund for the Parish (not toward tuition).  We hope that these options will allow everyone to feel comfortable with where the money is going.  Thanks for your support!

CALENDAR CHANGE:  Spirit Day has been changed from June 1 to May 22.

OLSH SANTA SHOP:  It is that time of year when we once again prepare for OLSH’s Santa Shop.  Sale dates are Thursday, December 8, and Friday, December 9.  The Santa Shop offers our children the opportunity to purchase inexpensive holiday gifts for their family and friends.  Donations of holiday gift items or handcrafted treasures will truly be appreciated.  Individually wrapped candy is always a big hit.  If you can help, please drop off items in the school office.  Thank you.

SOCCER PLAYERS NEEDED:  Any eighth-grade boys who are interested in playing soccer for Reading High School may sign up in the OLSH school office by Tuesday, November 29.  There will be an informational meeting for all prospective players and their parents.  Anyone who signs up will be contacted about this meeting by Wednesday, November 30.

NURSE’S OFFICE:  Volunteers for the Nurse’s Office for Friday, December 2 are Samantha Blum (8 a.m. ‘til 11 a.m.) and Karen Bigler (11 a.m. ‘til 2 p.m.).  Thanks, moms!
