OLSH TAGLINE:  You may have noticed the extra line of text in the heading of this week’s newsletter.  “Enriching Souls and Enlightening Minds” is the winner of the most votes for a tagline for OLSH.  We will begin using it on as much correspondence as is appropriate so that people will start associating that phrase with our school.  Thanks to the many parents who took the time to think about all of the tagline suggestions that were sent in and cast their vote for the phrase that best identifies OLSH.  There were many great suggestions, and we would not have wanted to make that choice without your input.  Thank you!

PARENT MARKETING LETTER:  In the October 21 school newsletter, I requested as part of our new marketing procedure that I have as a marketing tool a letter or letters from parents from all grades 1 through 8.  This letter, if sent in on a disk or emailed to me (I would then save it to a disk) could be personalized to send to prospective OLSH parents.  The document should be in a Word document format.  The purpose of the letter would be to explain the benefits of a Catholic school (namely, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) and the worth of that investment.  With over 200 families having children enrolled at OLSH, you know the benefits and the worthiness of your own investment.  At the time of my initial request, I received only one letter.  Now that the holidays are over, perhaps you will have the time to sit down and write a letter for the benefit of our school.  You are our best supporters.  Thanks!  --Mrs. Adelmann

SISTERS OF NOTRE DAME PRESENTATION:  The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur will be at OLSH next week to present to our seventh and eighth graders a documentary on the life and work of Sr. Dorothy Stang, a fellow Sister of Notre Dame, humanitarian, and martyr.   Sr. Dorothy was born in Dayton, Ohio and moved to the Amazon 22 years ago to help rural farmers build independent futures, protect their rights, and defend land reform.  In June of 2004 she was named “Woman of the Year” by the state of Para, Brazil for her work in the Amazon region.  Less than one week after meeting with the country’s human rights office to address threats to local farmers from loggers and landowners, she was shot to death in the Amazon rainforest (February 12, 2005).  The presentation of Sr. Dorothy’s life and work will take place at OLSH in the Community Room at 1 p.m. on Friday, January 13.   We invite you to join us.

MND/MOE LUNCH WITH GRADE 8:  Representatives from the Admissions Offices of Mt. Notre

Dame and Moeller High Schools will be here next Friday, January 13, to meet with all eighth graders at lunchtime to share pizza and pop and to answer any questions they may have following their schools’ Showcase Day/Eighth Grade Day held on Friday, January 6.  All eighth graders used Friday the 6th to visit either MND or Moeller or another high school that they might be interested in attending next year.  Although these reps are from MND and Moeller, they are here to answer any questions about their own schools or high school in general.

TERRA NOVA RESULTS:  Parents of students in grades 2, 4, 6, and 8—please look for an envelope addressed to you and coming home with your child today.  It contains the results of the Terra Nova/In View testing that your child was a part of in October.  There is also a letter from Mrs. Karen Jara, our school Psychologist, explaining these results.  The scores listed below are the median percentile anticipated (what a student is capable of, listed in parentheses) and obtained (what a student actually did, listed second):

CHILD FIND RELEASE:  Our school district needs help in locating children who may have a disability.  Each year, the Reading School District conducts a state-required count of all children with disabilities living in the District.  If you know of a child or adolescent between the ages of birth through 21 whom you suspect may have a disability and who is not currently receiving services, the Reading School District wants to hear from you.  Children who are attending or planning to attend a private school also are included in this count.  Please help the Reading School District locate children and teenagers who may need services.  All information is confidential.  You may contact the District directly or contact your child’s private school or church and ask them to forward the information to the District.  Child Find is a community-wide effort.  The District acknowledges the support of the following private schools that are participating with the District to ensure that all children are located:  Our Lady of the Sacred Heart and Ss. Peter and Paul.

NURSE’S OFFICE:  Volunteers for the Nurse’s Office for Friday, January 13, are Eleanor Bermingham (8 a.m. ‘til 11 a.m.) and Karen Bigler (11 a.m. ‘til 2 p.m.).  Thanks, moms!
