Friday, August 26                                   FULL DAY of SCHOOL

GOOD-BYE:   We must bid a sad farewell to our Speech Language Pathologist, Mrs. Mary Ennis, after 21 years with OLSH.  Mrs. Ennis and her husband, Greg, have a nearly three-year-old son, Kyle; they will welcome their second son, an adopted baby from Guatemala named Drew, next fall.  Mrs. Ennis wants to spend more time at home with her boys, and her current caseload at OLSH prohibits her from doing that.  She will be the SLP at St. John the Evangelist School in Deer Park, where her caseload will be smaller and allow her to work only one and one-half days a week instead of the three plus days a week she was working here.  We wish her all the fun two boys can bring!  Mrs. Ennis' replacement will be Amy Muche.

2005-06 SCHOOL SUPPLIES:  Each child will bring home today an order form for pre-packaged school supplies for 2005-06.  These orders must be returned to school by our last day, Friday, June 3, so that the orders can be placed with SchoolKidz in time for delivery to OLSH in August.  They will be available the weekend of August 20/21 after all Masses.  Please direct questions to Jamie Brenner at 554-4411.  (If you choose not to order through SchoolKidz, the list of supplies your child will need for next school year will be in the school packets available the weekends of August 13/14 and August 20/21 and can be bought at any store convenient to you.)

MEMORIAL DAY ESSAY CONTEST WINNERS:  Once again, OLSH eighth graders have performed well in the Memorial Day essay contest sponsored annually by the American Legion Halker-Flege Post 69.  Joe Wernke placed first in the boys' division and will read his essay at the Reading Lockland Cemetery following the Memorial Day parade on Monday.  Breanne Boyd's essay came in second in the girls' division.  Congratulations once again to some fine OLSH eighth-grade writers!

EARLY DISMISSALS:  A reminder that we will have two early dismissals next week.  On Tuesday, May 31 (Spirit Day), we will dismiss at 1:30 p.m.   Buses from First Student and Mason only will provide transportation home at this early dismissal time on Tuesday.  We will dismiss at 10:30 a.m. on our last day of school, Friday, June 3.  Buses from First Student, Mason, and Sycamore will provide transportation home on this day.   If your child normally rides a bus home from districts other than the ones listed, you must find alternate ways home on these two days.  No buses will be here at 2:30 p.m. on either of these days.

SPIRIT DAY UNIFORM:  Students should dress for Spirit Day in their gym uniform shorts and any appropriate shirt that will match or contain their team color (which they found out on Friday during the Spirit Rally).

PTA BREAKFAST:  All parents are invited to join OLSH students and staff at the final all-school Mass for 2004-05 on Friday, June 3.  Following the Mass and moving-up ceremony in the church, parents and their younger children not already at OLSH are invited to a breakfast sponsored by OLSH PTA in the Community Room.  It's a great time to wrap up the school year talking with other parents and a perfect way to fill up the time while you wait for your OLSH students to be dismissed at 10:30 a.m.  Join us!

THANK YOU:  We want to thank the many volunteers who help make the school office run so smoothly.  If we tried to list you all by name, surely someone would be skipped; and we suspect there are many parents who work quietly without anyone ever knowing all they do.  We do want to recognize the group of moms, under the direction of Heather VonLehmden, who pack white envelopes every Thursday.  This would be a huge job for one of us to do, and we greatly appreciate your time and cheerful attitudes.  We thank also our Nurse's Office volunteers.   --Lisa and Cathy

FROM THE LIBRARY:  Thanks so much to our many wonderful volunteers as well as everyone who supported our Scholastic Book Fairs, Entertainment Books sales, and Save the Children Foundation.  Next year, Heather VonLehmden and Alison O'Neill have generously volunteered to manage our library and could use your help.  There will be many fun jobs to do, small and large; and if you think you would be able to help out and learn some of the behind-the-scenes tasks, please send a note to the library before the end of this school year and we will contact you.  Have a GREAT SUMMER!  --Jeanne Schoeny

MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL:  A reminder to stop by the office between now and the last day of school (maybe after the PTA Breakfast on the last day?) to pick up any medications you may have sent in during the school year for your child.  We cannot keep meds from one year to the next and will dispose of any that are left here after June 3.

SUMMER TUTORING:  Would your child benefit from summer tutoring?  Whether to master concepts not fully understood during the school year or to maintain skills for the next school year, tutoring can be valuable time spent.  My name is Mary Jo Eggenberger.  As you may know, I have been a teacher's aide/substitute teacher at OLSH for several years.  If you are interested in tutoring for your child (those entering grades 1-6), please feel free to call me at home (563-2079) after 3 p.m. or leave a message for me at the school office.  I will be happy to return your call.

SURVEYS:  Please look in the envelope of your child's report card (available the weekends of June 11/12 and 18/19) for an Administrative Survey.  If you have advised us that your child will not be returning to OLSH for 2005-06, there will also be an Exit Survey in the envelope.  We would appreciate your cooperation in responding to these surveys.  Thank you.

REGISTRATION FEE:  We will reinstate the collection of a registration fee when we have registration for the 2006-07 school year next spring.  This fee will be non-refundable but will be applied to your tuition.

MARKET DAY:  Congratulations to Jamie Brenner, winner of our $25 gift certificate at our May sale.  Would you like a chance to win our Grilling Gift Giveaway?  All you need to do is place an order for our June sale!  There are three ways to place your order:  return your order form in the boxes in the church lobby by Thursday, June 2; order online until noon on Friday, June 3; or call Lisa Schoenberger (733-4707) or Valerie Grein (891-5830) until Thursday, June 2.  Not able to order this month?  We will be having sales through the summer.  Mark your calendars for our pick-up dates July 13 and August 17.  Watch upcoming church bulletins for ordering information.  Thanks for your continued support!

STUDENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:  Betty Lohman, who leads the Vacation Bible School at the First Southern Baptist Church on Jefferson Avenue in Reading, is looking for some current sixth and seventh graders (boys or girls) to help out with crafts and games during the evenings the week of July 11.  Please call her on her cell phone (919-1461) if you are able to volunteer.

THERE WILL BE NO HOT LUNCH NEXT WEEK.

PLEASE SEND A PACKED LUNCH WITH YOUR CHILD ON TUESDAY (IF YOU DID NOT ORDER PIZZA FOR SPIRIT DAY), WEDNESDAY, AND THURSDAY.

MILK, ORANGE DRINK, AND ICE CREAM WILL BE SOLD ON WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY.

FESTIVAL NEWS:

Have you purchased and sold your Major Award and Mega Split-the-Pot tickets yet?  Tickets are on sale after Mass.  Buy them early to be eligible for the $200 Early Bird Drawing on June 6.  Once you have turned in your money and ticket stubs, come back and get some more tickets!  Contact Tom Hartke (769-6351) if you have any questions.

Bid 'n Buy is looking for donations.  Please call Eric or Sherie Fortner (563-4040) to contribute.  If you have contacts with hotels, restaurants, or sports venues, gift certificates and event tickets are always popular.

We are looking for volunteers to help with all aspects of the festival.  COLLEGE-  AND HIGH SCHOOL-AGE WORKERS ARE WELCOME!  We need volunteers to help set up for the festival during the week of June 20 as well as to help in booths during the festival.  We are also looking for one additional Booth Chair.  Contact Randy or Kathleen Flannery (755-1258) for details.  Working at the festival is a great way to have fun, help the parish, and meet new people!

The Grocery Booth needs your donations for this year's festival.  Please bring canned goods and any non-perishable items you can donate to all Masses this and next weekend.  Place the canned goods in the Community Room.  Your generosity is very much appreciated.

Great entertainment is planned for this year's festival!  Friday night's musical guest is 3 Ways Out, Saturday's is The Bentwood Rockers, and Sunday features Stagger Lee.

The Bakery Booth needs bakers for all three days of the festival.  Items wanted include:  cakes, pies, brownies, cookies, Rice Krispie treats, fudge, coffee cakes, etc.  Some items freeze well--so bake ahead!  Call Beth Barnett  (563-8322) if you have questions.  We can pick up goodies from your home as well, if needed.

Finally, a reminder that the final Booth Chairpersons meeting will be held on Sunday, June 12 at 7 p.m.  Key issues will be discussed for our upcoming festival, so it is important that all key people attend this meeting.

SEE YOU AT THE FESTIVAL ON FRIDAY, SATURDAY, & SUNDAY, JUNE 24, 25, & 26!

HAVE A SAFE, RELAXING, AND ENJOYABLE SUMMER!

WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU BACK AT OLSH ON THURSDAY, AUGUST 25

READY FOR THE 2005-06 SCHOOL YEAR!
