FIRST COMMUNION:  Congratulations to our second graders (both OLSH and CCD students) who will make their First Communion on Sunday, April 24.  They have worked very hard this year getting ready for this most important step in their lives, and we hope this day will be a special one for them.  OLSH second graders will not be in school on Monday, April 25.

CITY OF READING CLEAN-UP DAY:  Last chance to sign up to work at this worthwhile event to be held on Saturday, April 23.  Call Carol Bullock-Carpenter at 733-4857 to sign up or for more information.  See the flyer coming home today with your youngest.

DRAMA CLUB:  We invite everyone to Mrs. O'Brien's Drama Club melodrama production entitled Pies, Ponies, and Pretty Pansy.  An enormous amount of work and time have gone into preparing for this big event.  The play will be presented twice on Thursday evening to accommodate everyone.  It will be held in the Community Room.  Come see some real talent that has been hiding in our students!

LOOKING AHEAD:  There will be no school on Monday, May 9 so that our teachers may attend an in-service.

FROM THE LIBRARY AND SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR:  Congratulations to Eric Hanneken, who was the winner of our "$100 Worth of Free Books" contest.  Congratulations also to the following students who won our poster giveaways:  Tim Koppenhafer, Garrett Patrick, Seth Harris, Kelsey Albrinck, Nick Ford, Nick Payne, Trey Holt, Kristin Sutor, Leah Anderson, Grace Kallenberg, Joseph Bermingham, Mary Kate Waitkus, Luke Kuechly, Daniel Widmann, Kelly Davidson, Sydney Blum, Taylor Holt, Emily Janszen, Allison Vonderhaar, Susan Hoffman, and Kaitlyn Fryman.  MANY THANKS to all who supported our Book Fair, donated books to our school library and classroom wish lists, and to all or our wonderful volunteers who worked at our Scholastic Book Fair and made it so successful.  There would be no Book Fair without you and the help of our most generous library volunteers!  We are happy to report to you that our Spring Book Fair profit was $993.69, most of which will be used to purchase more A.R. tests for our students.  In addition, we received $331.29 in bonus books for our library and donated a number of those books to the homerooms through the classroom wish list program.

We would like to acknowledge two very special people who work every year behind the scenes to make our Book Fairs so successful.  Thank you, Mrs. Ann Hartke, for compiling the list of all of the Accelerated Reader books at our Fair and making tags for those books so that they were so easy for our students to find.  Mrs. Hartke also volunteers many hours at Scholastic Books and donates the books she earns by working there to our school library.  Thank you, Mrs. Terry Donovan, who with Mrs. Hartke spent the entire day Sunday helping to tear down our Book Fair and transition the room back into our school library, ready for classes on Monday.  Mrs. Donovan also spends her Thursdays working in the school library and is responsible for creating and operating the new Publishing Center here at school.  What makes these two moms so special is that they continue to volunteer so many hours here at our school and do not even have children who attend OLSH.  We certainly admire and thank them for their true dedication, hard work, and generosity.  --Jeanne Schoeny

OVER FOR MORE BULLETIN INFO…

ALSO FROM THE LIBRARY:  Mrs. Tracy Engel, another great mom who volunteers in our library three mornings a week and covers most of our books, is making bookmarks for our students out of the Sunday comic strips.  We could use your help.  Please save your Sunday Enquirer comic strips and send them in to the library.  You will soon see your kids come home with some really cute bookmarks, thanks to Mrs. Engel's clever idea and to you!

KUDOS:  Creative Communication, Inc. sponsors poetry and essay contests throughout the year.  This year's topic for the essay contest was "What Is Important to Me?"  Several thousand students throughout the country participated; and OLSH eighth grader Breanne Boyd's essay was selected as one of the top ten among seventh, eighth, and ninth graders.  Congratulations, Breanne!  Please read Breanne's winning entry below.

HIGH SCHOOL DECISIONS:  Parents of current eighth graders--remember to call school or send in a note to let us know which high school your child will be attending next year.  Thank you.

OLSH SUMMER FESTIVAL:  Believe it or not, it is time to get ready for this year's festival; and the Grocery Booth is asking for your help and generous donations.  For bringing in two items, your child will receive an out-of-uniform pass good for Monday, May 16.  Make sure their first and last names and homeroom are on each item so that they get credit for everything they bring in.  Out-of-uniform passes will be distributed on Friday, May 13.  We have broken down the list as follows:  Grade 1--cleaning supplies; Grade 2--paper products; Grade 3--packaged food (i.e., pasta, rice, mac and cheese, etc.); Grade 4--baking goods; Grade 5--cereal; Grade 6--snack food; Grade 7--two liters of soda; and Grade 8--canned goods.

We are also looking for volunteers to work the booth!  This is a great way to meet new people!  If you can donate two hours of your time, contact Lisa McCabe at 755-0893.

MOELLER SPORTS CAMPS:  We have a limited number of brochures in the office for football and lacrosse camps being offered at Moeller High School this summer.  Let us know if you'd like one sent home with your son.

LOST AND FOUND:  A Disney "Kid Clips" cassette player was found on the playground recently.  Please call the school office if it belongs to you.

NURSE'S OFFICE:  Volunteers for the Nurse's Office for Friday, April 29 are Gina Prickel (8 a.m. 'til 11 a.m.) and Jeff McDonough (11 a.m. 'til 2 p.m.).  Thanks, parents!
