REGISTRATION:  If you have not returned your "Currently Enrolled" Registration Form (that was sent home on Friday, January 25 and was due this past Monday, March 7), you should be receiving a second notice being sent home today with your youngest.  Please return this form by THIS MONDAY, MARCH 14.   Thank you.

SCIENCE PROJECTS:  Parents and friends are invited to stop in the cafeteria tonight (Friday, March 11) from 6 p.m. 'til 7:30 p.m. to view the seventh-grade's Science projects that are on display.  Enjoy the Fish Fry, then head on over to see the work of Mrs. High's budding scientists!

TALENT SHOW:  Thank you to all those who participated in as well as those who organized the Talent Show that was held last Tuesday evening.  Thank you to the parents who supervised their children while attending.  There were, however, students who were with parents and students who came unsupervised who did not act in an appropriate manner.  The saying "It takes a village to raise a child" is not fair to the parents who do supervise their children and then are expected to tolerate, supervise, or discipline other children when they come to an activity.  --Mrs. Adelmann

Note:  It was nice to see parents who attended the Talent Show even though they did not have children participating.  We hope that parents used this Fine Arts activity as a learning experience and explained to their children that it is impolite to move around during a performance or to leave as soon as the child you came to see has performed.

PRAYER SERVICE:  We look forward to spending TV-free family time together on Thursday, March 17 beginning with a prayer service in church at 7 p.m.  After the prayer service, you and your family will move on to the Community Room to play Bingo while enjoying a treat.  If you did not R.S.V.P. via the flyer that went home last week, please call the school office (733-5225) if you would like to attend.

LENTEN RAFFLE:  The winners of the third teacher raffle for this Lenten season were:  Laura Schneider (5-S)--surprise basket; Kelly Robinson (1-O)--Dairy Queen certificate (the mystery raffle); Meggie Baker (8-C)--"Baker's Dozen" homemade cookies; and Ali Kessling (2-R), Evan Curry (3-P), Grant Garbacik (4-D), Emma Ficke (5-L), Mai Rottinghaus (5-S), Kevin Bishop (6-G), Daniel Widmann and Jonathan Brandstetter (7-S), and Tarah Sand (8-W)--out-of-uniform passes for themselves plus two friends each.

Items in this coming week's raffle (to be awarded on Wednesday, March 16) are:  a basket of candy; a DVD of the award-winning movie The Incredibles; a kit with which you can make 6 sand art projects; and out-of-uniform passes for ten winners plus two friends each.  Tickets are 25 cents each or five for $1 and can be purchased each morning before school in Ms. Schafer's homeroom.  All proceeds benefit our Nicaragua collection.

The total amount of money donated to date to our Nicaragua collection is $525.50.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART:  We are pleased to announce that the grand total of donations made to the American Heart Association through our Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser is $4210.00!  Thank you for your generosity.

YOUNG REMBRANDTS:  The Young Rembrandts Art Program has been very educational and rewarding for those who are participating.  They have learned about and produced artwork reflecting ideas of shape, intricate pattern work, and mirror image (creating fans); elements of Carnival, color, and symmetry (Mardi Gras masks); vanishing points and horizon lines (desert perspective); and surrealism and dreamlike images (Salvador Dali lesson).  This class finishes up on March 23.  We hope to offer subsequent classes and will keep you advised.

OVER FOR MORE BULLETIN INFO…

TARGET:  Thank you to the parents who have used their Target REDcards (Target Visa and Target Card credit cards) to make purchases at Target stores and designate OLSH as the recipient of a percentage of their purchases.  To date, OLSH has received $147.09 through Target's "Take charge of Education" program.  To participate, parents can:  visit target.com/tcoe; stop by the kiosk in their favorite Target store; or call 1-800-316-6142.

CONGRATULATIONS:  Congratulations to eighth grader Breanne Boyd, who entered an essay in the Catholic War Veterans' local Post 1492 essay contest.  Breanne's essay "What Does Veterans' Day Mean to Me?" won first place at the local, state, and national levels.  She will receive a monetary award as well as a certificate.  Well done, Breanne!  Her essay appears below.

SEVENTH-GRADE WRITING SAMPLES:  Seventh-grade writing samples were recently evaluated at a day-long session attended by a group of teachers selected from among several area elementary schools.   Each paper was judged by two teachers and needed to achieve a combined score of at least 5.  We are pleased to report that all of OLSH's seventh graders' writing samples were judged competent.

BOX TOPS:  Don't forget to send in any General Mills box tops that you have at home.  We need to turn in all box tops for this year by March 31 to qualify for a bonus.  Please continue to save them after this date, as we will continue this program during the 2005-06 school year.  Box tops collected over the next few months and through the summer can give us a jump on next year's collection.

EASTER CORSAGES:  The deadline for ordering Easter corsages through Junior Girl Scout Troop 390 is today (Friday, March 11).  Please call Lisa Waitkus at 733-3658 if you still want to order.  Corsages will be ready for pickup on Holy Saturday, March 26, from 4 p.m. 'til 5 p.m.

CAFETERIA BEHAVIOR:  The noise and behavior during the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades' lunch period have reached an unacceptable level.  Students are not being respectful to the cafeteria ladies or to the teacher on duty.  The students (a great number, but of course not all) are ignoring requests to turn down the volume, pick up food, eat with manners, talk with those close to them (and not yell down the table), etc.  They will now be seated in alphabetical order (i.e., assigned seats).  They can still talk (at a reasonable volume); but if the room gets out of control, the teacher on duty will either ring the bell or blow a whistle.  If this happens again, all students will stand silently outside for a period of time during their free time.  Yes, this is their time to socialize; but there is a level of communication that is acceptable, and they have not spent the morning in silence while in class or in the halls--so lunch does not have to be this out of control.
