THANK YOU:  The teachers and staff extend to Tamara Anderson, Heather VonLehmden, Julie Curry, and Gina Vonderhaar a huge "thank you" for planning and serving the delicious lunch on Wednesday in celebration of Catholic Schools Week.  We would also like to recognize and thank the many parents who volunteered to cover the cafeteria (Mary Beth Armstrong, Kathy Mahoney, Karla Mitchell,  Michelle Nurre, and Marc Zeuch) and classrooms during indoor recess (Eleanor Bermingham, Sharon Bohlen, Rose and Jacob Carota, Tom and Leah Winkler Craven, Amy Frey, Paul Gallo, Cathy Garbacik, Tom Grau, Lisa Igney, Susan McFarland, Michelle Nurre, Kim Pomeroy, Kim Retta, Miriam Vuotto, and Marc Zeuch).  Because of our generous volunteers, teachers and staff were able to enjoy a delicious, relaxed, worry-free lunch.  We are very grateful.

POWER OF THE PEN:  Six OLSH seventh graders and six eighth graders will participate in a day-long writing competition to be held on Saturday, February 5, at Winton Woods Junior High School.  Students were selected to participate in this district competition on the quality of writings done in Mrs. Creighton's English class; winners at this level will advance to the regional contest to be held on April 2 at Sycamore Junior High.  Good luck to seventh graders Amanda Eagan, Drew Fladung, Missy Gottschlich, Robin Igney, Katie Shadley, and Hannah Vogt and eighth graders Meggie Baker, Andrea Bazzoli, Breanne Boyd, Chris Champlin, Joe Nurre, and Joe Wernke.

MONTE CARLO:  Plan to join your friends and fellow parishioners at the 22nd Annual Men's Club Monte Carlo on Saturday evening, February 5 in the Activity Center.  All proceeds benefit the OLSH Computer Program and the facility.

OPEN HOUSE:  Please join us for Open House this Sunday from 9 a.m. 'til noon.  Teachers will be in their classrooms with planned activities and/or to answer any questions visitors may have.  Please spread the word about OLSH and invite friends and neighbors to see what we have to offer!  If you've been to our Open House in the past, you probably recall that we always have tasty refreshments for our guests.  This year, the Open House is being held in conjunction with Donut Sunday.  So stop by the cafeteria for donuts, juice, and coffee before or after your tour of the school.  See you there!

OPEN HOUSE TALENT TIME:  During the OLSH Open House this Sunday, students will be given a chance to perform.  No auditions are necessary.  Mrs. Rieman will have a keyboard, microphone, amplifier, and CD player set up in the cafeteria.  If you would like to perform, bring your music and any other needed items to the cafeteria.  Please make sure all music is appropriate.  Performances will take place after the 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Masses.  If you're not a performer, come enjoy donuts and juice while watching your friends perform.

DRAMA CLUB:  We apologize for the confusion about which actors had practice last week.  This week, anyone who is in scenes 7 through 12 will practice both Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30 p.m. 'til 3:30 p.m. in the Community Room.  The following students are involved in these scenes:  Erica Brock, Holly Carota, Sara Carota, Keith Chachoff, Evan Curry, Molly Ernstes, Daniel Gates, Taylor Holt, Kiki Isaac, Abbi Kearns,  Christian Kettler, Olivia Kettler, Katie Lenart, Chelsea Mehbod, Sami Mehbod, Ellen O'Neill, Grace Rohs, Jennifer Sutor, Kristin Sutor, and Kaley Zeuch.

READING HIGH SCHOOL VISIT:  Ronda Eisenhard, Reading Jr.-Sr. High School Counselor, will be at OLSH on Wednesday, February 9 at 11:40 a.m. (during lunch/recess) to speak to eighth graders interested in attending Reading High School next year.

CHESS TOURNAMENT:  Students in grades 4 through 8 may sign up now for the chess tournament.  If your child knows how to play, please encourage him to take part in the tournament.  Depending on the number of students playing, there will be a grades 4/5 level and a grades 6/7/8 level.  We may be able to have a novice level for grades 4-8 also.  Research has proven that there are many educational benefits derived from playing chess, including improved reading and math skills, ability to focus, lengthened attention span, even higher scores on the SAT tests.  Now is a good time to get your son or daughter involved in chess.  The tournament will be played on Tuesdays and Fridays during lunch/recess beginning Tuesday, February 15.  If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Rogers.

YOUNG REMBRANDTS ART PROGRAM:  This program is off to a very good start.  The instructor is very impressed with the attitude and good manners of our students.  Their art work is displayed outside Room 2-O.  Parents, please plan to pick up your children after Art Class (3:40 p.m.) outside the cafeteria entrance.  Thank you.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART:  Parents, please remember to send in your child's permission slip for this event, which starts on February 14.  We must have a permission slip prior to that date (no later than next Friday, February 11) in order for your child to participate.  If you wish to make a donation, please send in that money with your child's permission.

FISH FRY:  We need your help to make our Fish Fry a success!  Mark your calendars for March 4, 11, and 18 from 4:30 p.m. 'til 7 p.m.  We are looking for adult and junior-high student volunteers to work any shift.  Please fill out the form coming home in your child's white envelope and return it a.s.a.p.  We also need lots of bakers for the dessert table (i.e., cookies, cakes, brownies, pies, and cupcakes).  Spread the news--our fish is always tasty, and new this year is homemade macaroni and cheese.  Also on the menu are shrimp and pizza; carryout is available.  Thanks for your support!

SPIRITWEAR:  Please look for Spiritwear order forms coming home today.  All orders and money are due by MONDAY, FEBRUARY 14.  Make your check payable to "OLSH YAC" and send orders to the office in an envelope marked "Spiritwear".  Items will be delivered to your child's homeroom in approximately four to six weeks.  NOTE:  Basketball breakaway pants are now being offered in youth as well as adult sizes and are now embroidered with the OLSH logo!

TALENT SHOW UPDATE:  All students should have received an orange note with all the audition and show details for the OLSH PTA Talent Show.  (Please contact Mrs. Rieman if you did not receive the note and are interested in participating.)  Talent Show auditions are Wednesday, February 16, and Friday, February 18, from 2:45 p.m. 'til 4 p.m. in the Community Room.  All "acts" must sign up to audition.  Sign-up sheets are in the Music room on the cabinet doors.
