MARDI GRAS: We had a wonderful Mardi Gras
celebration on February 8. The wagon
parade was a great success. If you
donated a wagon to be used in the parade and have not yet picked it up, please
do so. The wagons will be in 2-O or
in the cafeteria and can be picked up after Masses this weekend or during
school hours next week. Thank you.
SPELLDOWN: We wish Keith Kennedy the
best of luck in The Cincinnati Post
Regional Spelldown to be held at Union Terminal on Wednesday, February 23. Keith earned this chance to compete against
other school winners by coming out on top in the OLSH Spelling Bee held last
month. Good luck, Keith!
POWER OF THE PEN RESULTS: In a
challenging District Power of the Pen competition at Winton Woods Middle School
on Saturday, February 5, OLSH eighth grader Joe Wernke achieved "Best of
Round". One hundred twenty-four
eighth graders were presented with a prompt to write a paper based on the
number ten. Joe entitled his paper
"Ten Minutes More." In
achieving Best of Round, Joe received a Best of Round ribbon and a
journal. His piece will be published in
the annual Power of the Pen Best of Round booklet. Joe will proceed to the Regional Competition
on April 24 at Sycamore Junior High School along with fellow OLSH eighth
graders Breanne Boyd, Chris Champlin, and Joe Nurre and OLSH seventh grader
Drew Fladung. Congratulations to Joe
and best of luck to all of our students as they participate in the Regional
Competition. See the back of this
Principal's Bulletin for Joe's winning composition. We think Joe is well on his way to achieving his dream of
becoming a writer!
FISH FRY VOLUNTEERS: We are in
desperate need of additional volunteers for the OLSH Fish Fry Fridays beginning
March 4. We can use adult and
junior-high students for all shifts on all three Fridays (4:30 p.m.-7 p.m. on
March 4, 11, and 18) as well as bakers to bring in goodies to serve at the Fish
Fry. Please turn in your volunteer
sheet or contact Melissa Fahr (761-7332), Marc Zeuch (769-4735), or Mary Beth
Armstrong (793-4574) to volunteer.
Thanks for your support.
NICARAGUA LENTEN COLLECTION: We will
again be collecting money for Nicaragua during Lent this year. Each homeroom will have a container for any
donations you and your children would like to make. For families new to OLSH:
We have raised money for Nicaragua for more than ten years in memory of
Sr. Margie Navarro (sister of former Auxiliary Clerk Jan Otten), who devoted
almost 20 years of her life to the development of the Batahola Mission near
Managua, Nicaragua. Our contributions
have already enabled the people of that area to build two homes near Batahola
following the devastation of Hurricane Mitch in the early '90s. We have already started collecting and will
continue to do so through Wednesday of Holy Week. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
LENTEN TEACHER RAFFLE: Each week
during Lent, four staff/teachers will be donating something for a raffle. The "something" covers a wide
variety of items. This week's
donations are: sundaes for two and three of their friends; McDonald's lunch for
two and a friend each; movie tickets for two and a friend each with a snack
provided; and lunch and game time with Mrs. O'Brien. Raffle tickets are 25 cents or five for $1. Tickets can be purchased before school in
homeroom 5-S. Winners will be drawn at
song practice each Wednesday morning, and new raffle items will be announced at
that time. We will also post the
coming week's "something" in each Principal's Bulletin so that you
can plan with your children what they would like to try to win. All raffle proceeds will go to Nicaragua.
KINGS ISLAND COUPONS: The
youngest in each family will bring home today a discount coupon from
Paramount's Kings Island good for a discounted admission to the park on days
designated on the coupon. Enjoy a fun
day with your family this spring!
ST. PATRICK'S DAY DANCE: Mark your
calendars for YAC's 5th Annual St. Patrick's Day Dance to be held on
March 12 from 8 p.m. 'til 1 a.m. with music by The Remains. Look for ticket information coming home
today with your youngest.
NURSE'S OFFICE: Volunteers for the Nurse's
Office for next Friday, February 23, are Jeff McDonough (8 a.m.-11 a.m.) and
Leah Winkler (11 a.m.-2 p.m.). Thanks,
parents!
LOST AND FOUND: We received a call early
this week from a mom whose son played basketball in our gym a couple of weeks
ago and left a pair of basketball shoes here.
They are black/white/red Nikes and were in a Castaways swim bag. Mr. Mueller has checked the Lost and Found
in the gym and did not see these shoes.
We are hoping that maybe one of our families picked up the bag and was
waiting to hear something about its owner.
We also have in the office a beautiful leather box containing an old PTA
pin connected to a gavel. If you have
any information about these items, please call the school office
(733-5225).
