HATS OFF:  Eighth grader Breanne Boyd has won first place in the Catholic War Veterans' Essay Contest.  The title of her essay was "What Does Veterans' Day Mean to Me?"  Breanne also entered the Creative Communication, Inc. essay contest.  The topic for this essay was "What Is Important to Me?"  Her essay had been found worthy of publication, as it was a "Top Ten Essay".  Congratulations, Breanne!

CHRISTMAS MUSIC PROGRAM:  Mrs. Rieman and your children would love to have you join them in the Activity Center next Friday, December 17 for a special Christmas Music Program.  It's the perfect way to spend part of our last day before Christmas break!

SAVE THE CHILDREN:  Dear parents and students--This is the fifth year that OLSH teachers and staff have sponsored a child from Manila through the Save the Children Foundation.  His name is Silvester Aberion, and he is a 14-year-old eighth grader whose favorite subject is Mathematics.  Silvester is the usual shy type of child, and he loves doing creative art.  If you would like to correspond with Silvester and let a new friendship begin, he will be happy to answer your letters.  In this way, we can learn more about each other's culture, lifestyle, and thoughts from across the globe.  You may send e-mails to jdelacruz@savechildren.org or to the following address:  Save the Children, P.O. Box 4448, Manila Central Post Office building, Liwasang Bonifacio, Metro Manila, Philippines.  Last year many of you joined us, and we were able to continue to help and support Silvester and his family because of your generosity.  Again this year, we are inviting you to join us.  We have been blessed with so much.  Christmas time, especially, offers us a great opportunity to share our good fortune with those who are less fortunate.  If you would like to be a part of our sponsorship, please send your donation to school in an envelope marked "Save the Children".  Please make checks payable to the same.  Thank you so much for your help and generosity.

LIBRARY BOOKS TO BE COVERED:  We have entered more books into the library system, and they are ready to be covered.  If you have covered books before or would like to, please stop by the library and pick up a box of books to take home.  Thank you for your help!

MARKET DAY:  Congratulations to Susan McFarland, winner of our Holiday Basket.  December's profit was $533.  January's order forms will be sent home after Christmas break.  Thanks for your continued support!

SCRIP:  Scrip gift certificates will be sold both this weekend and next, December 11/12 and December 18/19.  Stop in the library or click on www.glscrip.com to check out the long list of stores from which you can choose.  Call Sandy Champlin (733-5235) with questions.  She will also be glad to help out with last-minute requests the week before Christmas.

CARTRIDGE RECYCLING:  We are going to begin accepting empty ink and toner cartridges in the school office and at the school entrance in cooperation with Staples, who will pay OLSH $1 for each eligible cartridge.  Please see the flyer coming home today for more information or call Julie Gorsuch with questions (733-5853).

NURSE'S OFFICE VOLUNTEERS:  Nurse's Office volunteer moms for next Friday, December 17 are Melissa Fahr (8 a.m.-11 a.m.) and Penny O'Brien (11 a.m.-2 p.m.).  Thank you, moms.
