REPORT CARDS:  Fr. Jack will distribute report cards in each homeroom on Thursday, January 20.  Please check with your children for the report cards when they come home on Thursday.

GRADE 6R CHANGE:  Rather than disrupt two classes with a change of teachers, Mrs. Osborne will remain as the homeroom teacher in 6R.  Mrs. Robinson, who will be returning from maternity leave on Tuesday, January 18, will be the floating substitute; when Mrs. Locaputo begins maternity leave in March, Mrs. Robinson will be her long-term substitute.  We will not change the name of the homeroom at this point.  Thank you for your understanding.

TERRA NOVA RESULTS:  Parents of students in grades 2, 4, 6, and 8--please check for the results of the Terra Nova/In View tests your children took in October.  These results, accompanied by a letter from our school psychologist (Mrs. Karen Jara), are being sent home today.  By way of further explanation:  An anticipated score is what a student is capable of.  An obtained score is what the student actually did.  The scores listed below are the median percentile obtained (listed first) and anticipated (listed in parentheses):

Reading                 Language                   Math                         Science                 Social Studies

                Grade 2                   68.8 (64.0)      65.5 (64.3)      69.3 (62.0)      67.0 (62.3)      64.5 (60.4)

                Grade 4                   75.0 (69.0)      74.3 (70.0)      69.0 (72.0)      74.0 (67.0)      83.4 (69.0)

                Grade 6                   63.2 (69.8)      76.0 (72.0)      72.0 (64.7)      71.5 (72.7)      73.7 (70.0)

                Grade 8                   77.7 (70.0)      70.8 (71.3)      81.4 (67.6)      82.3 (71.0)      74.3 (72.5)

COLLECTION FOR TSUNAMI VICTIMS/SURVIVORS:   Thursday, January 20 is the official day of our tsunami relief collection, which will be sent to Catholic Relief Services.  However, donations can be sent to the office any time until the end of January, when we will send all donations in.  Thank you in advance for your generosity toward those suffering half a world away, realizing that disasters of many forms can strike anywhere at any time.  Students who donate at any time up until and including Thursday may be out of uniform on that day only (January 20).

KNIGHTS OF ST. JOHN SCHOLARSHIP:  Parents of eighth graders, please check with your children for the application and recommendation forms for the Knights of St. John Scholarship (a  renewable, partial scholarship to be used for high school) that were sent home with all eighth grade students on Tuesday of this past week.  There are deadlines (noted in the information) for both recommendation forms and for the return of the application.

MARKET DAY:  There will be a Market Day order pickup on Wednesday of next week (January 19).  While we are grateful for the volunteer help we receive each month from both our parents and our sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students, we have had some student discipline problems in the past couple of months and would like to request that students who volunteer to help us come for the right reason (to help sort, pack, and distribute orders--not to run through the school halls and hang out around the parking lot or in the bathrooms).   The moms are too busy taking care of orders to oversee student behavior.  Parents of student volunteers, please talk to your children about this.  We don't want to lose our volunteers, but we do expect them to be responsible and contributing workers.  We offer as an incentive to our workers a Blockbuster gift card, but volunteer students must earn the privilege of being included in this drawing.  Thank you.  --Lisa Schoenberger, Chairperson and Valerie Grein, Co-Chairperson

SAVE THE CHILDREN:  Many, many THANKS to our teachers, staff, and to our students and families who sent donations again this year to support our adopted child from Manila, Silvester Aberion.  We collected $355--enough to support Silvester through this year.  Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity!!  You are making a wonderful difference in the life of this young boy.

AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS:  Because of their high scores (90th percentile or above) on the Mt. Notre Dame STS Placement Test given on November 20, the following OLSH students have been designated at "Billiart Honorees"--Andrea Bazzoli, Breanne Boyd, Alyson Eagan, and Grace Ficke.  They will receive recognition at a special ceremony to be held on Wednesday, January 19 at MND.  In addition, Andrea Bazzoli and Caitlin Bermingham have been awarded scholarships to Mt. Notre Dame.

The Summit Country Day School has awarded high school scholarships to OLSH eighth graders Chris Champlin, Eric Gammarino, Mark Gottschlich, Joe Nurre, and Joe Wernke.  These scholarships have been awarded based on academic achievement, performance on the entrance exam, and demonstration of leadership qualities.

We congratulate these eighth graders on a job well done.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART:  During the week of February 14-18, all P.E. classes will be participating in Jump Rope for Heart.  This is a fund raiser for the American Heart Association, with proceeds going to help people with heart disease, strokes, or other heart-related conditions.  Our goal is to raise $1,500, which averages out to $5 per child.  Parent volunteers are needed to be present at various stations during the event and also to help with the bookkeeping.  Donation forms will be coming home soon with each child.  The deadline for all money raised is February 25, but money may be turned in anytime before then during the child's normal P.E. class time.  Also, students may make a $1 donation in the honor or the memory of friends and/or family members who have experienced a heart condition or stroke.  Please be sure to send in with your money the name of the person being honored.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact Mrs. Geers through the school office.

GEOGRAPHY BEE RESULTS:  In December, students in grades 4 through 8 participated in the 2005 National Geographic Geography Bee.  Congratulations to these homeroom semifinalists:  Stephanie Lyons (4-D), Jessica Bigler (4-T), William Smeal (5-L), James Stall and Kyle Gordon (5-S), Nick Myers and Andrew Pryse (6-G), Patrick Bennett (6-R), Hannah Vogt (7-H), Keith Kennedy (7-S), Davey Stenger (8-C), and Joe Wernke (8-W).   The Championship Round took place on January 10.  Finalists were:  Nick Myers, Joe Wernke, and Hannah Vogt.  Our school champion is Hannah Vogt, whose name will be the first on a commemorative plate.  She also has taken a written test to qualify for State competitions.  Thanks to all participants!  We hope you enhanced your geographic awareness and had some fun, too.

YEARBOOK:  Please send any photos you have for the yearbook to Alison O'Neill (c/o Ellen O'Neill, 4-T).  Photos cannot be returned.  Contact Alison at 769-4853 with any questions.
