PICTURE RETAKES:  If your child was absent on the original picture day (October 14), you should have received an order form for retakes to be done on Monday, November 22.  If your child was here on October 14 and will have his picture retaken on the 22nd, please be sure to return his original packet on that day so that the photographer can retrieve information from the bar code on the package.  Lifetouch will reprint the same package you ordered originally.

THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE:  Don't forget to send in items this coming Monday, November 22,  for Student Government's Thanksgiving Food Drive.  Each year this food collection benefits local needy families, and this year we have been asked to fill 35 baskets.  In case you have misplaced your copy of the food drive flyer, following are the items we are requesting from each grade:  Grade 1--16-oz. cans of fruit; Grade 2--16-oz. cans of vegetables; Grade 3--6-oz. Jell-O's and 12-count packages of rolls; Grade 4--16-oz. cans of turkey gravy; Grade 5--13.75-oz. boxes of instant potatoes and 16-oz. cans of cranberry sauce; Grade 6--12-oz. boxes of stuffing mix and 16-oz. cans of sweet potatoes; Grade 7--eggs and bread; and Grade 8--milk and butter.  In addition, we will gratefully accept donations of 12-15-pound turkeys and pumpkin pies.  If you would like to donate staples (sugar, salt, flour, coffee, tea, cereal, cake mixes, soups, pasta) in addition to the items requested above, we would accept those also.  We appreciate the generosity our school community has shown in the past and hope to continue this giving tradition.  Thank you!

GRANDPARENTS/SPECIAL PERSONS DAY:  We hope many of you are planning to participate in our Grandparents/Special Persons Day to be held this Tuesday, November 23.  Our special day begins with a Mass at 8:15 a.m. in the Activity Center followed by donuts and coffee for our guests and entertainment by the primary grades.  Your special persons can then visit students in their classrooms until 10:45 a.m.  Please be sure that your guest brings a self-addressed stamped envelope to give to the room parent in the classroom.  Reservations were due on Monday, November 15; but if you have a last-minute invitee, please call Heather VonLehmden by Monday, November 22.

MARKET DAY:  Thank you to all who sold pies for our Pie Contest!  We sold a total of 268 pies--a record for us!  Our November profit was $1,257, with $737 of that amount being pie profit!  A very big "thank you" to those who donated pies.  They will be donated to our Student Government's Thanksgiving Food Drive.

OVER FOR MORE BULLETIN INFO…

CAMPBELL'S LABELS:  Congratulations to the following winners for October's drawing:  1-O--Henry Kuechly, Kirsten Lucas, and Kelley Peter; 1-P--Sam Miller; 3-P--Christy Kennedy and Megan Mitsch; 4-D--Seth Harris; 4-T--Paige Brown, Ashley Peter, and Jonathan Schworer; 5-S--Zach Frey; 6-R--Luke Shadley; 7-S--Katie Lucas and Joey O'Brien; and 8-W--Chris Frey.  Save yourself from hand cramps--you do not need to write names on Box Tops, as they are not included in the monthly drawings.

SANTA'S SHOP:  It's that time of year, and we are once again preparing for OLSH's Santa Shop.  Sale dates are Thursday, December 9 and Friday, December 10.  The Santa Shop offers our children the opportunity to purchase inexpensive holiday gifts for their family and friends.  Donations of holiday gift items or handcrafted treasures will truly be appreciated!  Individually wrapped Christmas candy is always a big hit, too.  If you can help, please drop off items in the school office.  If necessary, call Julie Mehbod at 733-9636 for pickup.

SCRIP:  Scrip gift certificates will be sold after all Masses for the next several weekends.  Gift certificates make great gifts, and we can order them from nearly 500 stores.  Sometimes they become unavailable as we get closer to Christmas, so order early!  If you have internet access, you can print a copy of all available stores from this website:  http://www.glscrip.com.  Click on "retailers", and there is an option for a printer-friendly version that you can print yourself.  If you have any questions, please call Sandy Champlin at 733-5235.

LIGHT UP READING:  Please see the flyer coming home today.  If you want to order a luminaria, please send your form with payment to the school office by Monday, November 29.  Any questions can be directed to Lisa Schoenberger at 733-4707 or Mike Koewler at 821-4575.

DISTINGUISHED GRADUATE:  During Catholic Schools Week (January 31 through February 4, 2005), we honor a person who graduated from OLSH at least ten years ago and who has made a significant contribution to his/her community or church which reflects favorably on the education received here at OLSH.  A nomination should include the nominee's name, address, year of graduation from OLSH, additional education, and three achievements.  Please send in your nominations no later than Tuesday, November 23 to the school office or the Parish Center.

NEW YAC POLICY:  Effective immediately, coaches are responsible for the timely return of uniforms to the sports coordinator with a complete list of the players and uniforms returned.  The coordinator is responsible for providing a time and location in advance to coaches, giving the coach ample time to collect uniforms.  Any player not returning a uniform cannot participate in the succeeding OLSH sport until the uniform is returned.  That player will be registered with OLSH, will be placed on the roster, and can participate in tryouts.  However, once the YAC President is notified that the player's uniform has not been returned, the player cannot participate in any practice or game until the President is notified that the uniform has been returned.

SWEET TREAT ALTERNATIVES:  A mother has suggested that organizations try to come up with some other form of treats for the students besides candy, cookies, etc.  In just these first months of school, we have had:  a candy reward for Magazine Drive, five-pound Hershey bars, an ice cream social, Campbell labels candy reward, pie and ice cream to the class selling the most Market Day pies, a cookie treat from YAC, and possibly occasional rewards of candy from homeroom teachers.  When I look at this list, it is an eye opener.  This mother also mentioned all the recent press regarding childhood obesity, lack of fitness, and early health problems related to these things.  Perhaps we could all think harder about alternative rewards and treats.  Thank you to this mom for such a good suggestion.
