RED RIBBON WEEK:  Red Ribbon Week will be celebrated at OLSH from Monday, October 25 through Friday, October 29.  Red Ribbon Week began in 1985, when a drug enforcement officer named Salazar was killed by drug traffickers in Mexico.  People in California began wearing red ribbons in his honor.  In 1988 Congress proclaimed the last week in October as Red Ribbon Week, during which time students are educated about the harmful effects of drugs and are encouraged to aim for success.  We focus on taking a stand and reminding ourselves that "Freedom Is Drug Free" through a variety of activities planned throughout the week.

HIGH SCHOOL VISITS:  Several area parochial high schools will visit our eighth graders this week.  These visits precede these schools' Open Houses and Entrance Tests scheduled for November and December.  Your eighth-grade student will bring home literature after each school's visit containing dates and times for these upcoming events.  In addition, we will include Open House and Entrance Test dates and times in future Principal's Bulletins as these dates approach.

PTA SKATING PARTY:  PTA's first skating party of the school year will be held this Tuesday evening, October 26 from 6:30 p.m. 'til 8:30 p.m. at Skatetown USA.  Please check the flyer/permission slip coming home today with your youngest.

KIDS VOTING:  All students will have an opportunity to vote for the following races:  President, U.S. Senate, U.S. Congress, Ohio Legislature, and County Commissioner.  Students will vote online in the Computer Lab on Monday,  November 1.  Their voting will take approximately one minute.  Total results of Kids Voting will be available at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 2 at www.kids-voting.org.  Our own school results will be e-mailed to us, and we will report them in the November 5th  Principal's Bulletin.  ATTENTION, PARENTS:  We could use two volunteers on Monday, November 1 from 9:15 a.m. 'til about noon to help the students vote.  Please call the school office (733-5225) if you have minimal knowledge of the computer and would like to help out.  Thanks.

ENTERTAINMENT 2005 BOOKS:  LAST CHANCE to buy Entertainment 2005 books!  Look for an order form coming home with your youngest child today.  The last day to place an order/return your form is Monday, November 1.  Many thanks to all who supported this program!

WEBSITE UPDATE:  Check out additional items of information now available on our website  (www.olshschool.net):  the 2004-05 school calendar, school forms (access under the "School Info" link), Market Day and Kroger Gift Card programs (access under "Parents"/"Fund Raising" links), and the upcoming Book Fair and Monte Carlo ("News"/"Other News of Interest" link).

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR:  You may win $100 in books at the Book Fair!  The OLSH Scholastic Book Fair is coming to school during the week of November 1 through November 7, and the students will be visiting the Book Fair in the library during their library times.  There they will be able to view and buy books.  They will also have the option of filling out their own wish list to bring home for your approval.  You may return this list in an envelope marked "Book Fair" along with a check made payable to OLSH.  We will fill your order and deliver it to your child's homeroom.  Any student making a purchase will be entered in a drawing for $100 worth of books.  Fifteen additional names will be drawn for our free poster give-away.  Winners will be notified during school on Thursday, November 4 and may make their selections then.  Teachers will have "Classroom Wish Lists" posted so that you may donate books to your child's classroom if you'd like.  On Saturday and Sunday, November 6 and 7, our Book Fair will be open to all parents, students, and parishioners.  Parents, you are also welcome to come during your child(ren)'s scheduled library time, anytime during the school day (between 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.), and during conferences on Thursday, November 4 and Friday, November 5.  Visiting the Book Fair gives you a great opportunity to look for gifts for your children, friends, teachers, and even yourself for the holidays or birthdays.  All proceeds benefit our school library.  A book list that previews only a few of the many books offered at the Fair is coming home with your child(ren) today.

GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL:  All registered players--open gym times for player evaluation are as follows:  Grade 3--Saturday, October 30, 11 a.m.-noon; Grade 4--Wednesday, October 27, 2:45 p.m.-3:45 p.m.; Grade 6--Saturday, October 30, 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m.; and Grade 8--Wednesday, October 27, 3:45 p.m.-4:45 p.m.  In addition, tryouts for Grade 8 will be held on Saturday, October 30 from noon 'til 1:30 p.m.  Additional dates for eighth grade and possibly seventh grade will be announced.  Please call Laurie Hoffman (733-9380) with questions.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT REPORT:  Many times parents don't realize the significant charitable efforts of our junior high Student Government.  While we really do not believe in seeking attention for our "good deeds", we do wish to demonstrate accountability to all those in our school community who so generously donate.  The following donations have been made possible by Student Government so far in 2004:  $500 to Our Lady of the Mountains School in Pikesville/Paintsville, Kentucky; $200 to Valley Interfaith; $100 to Relay for Life;  $100 to Hospice (in memory of Suzanne Harding, former teacher and musician); and $65 for membership in the TCSC National Organization.  Two upcoming events are our annual Busken Halloween cookie sale and the very important Thanksgiving Food Drive.  Last year, we provided holiday meals and basics for 36 families!  We look forward to continuing past traditions and establishing new ones.  Thanks again for your support.  --Ms. Leslie Willet, OLSH Student Government Moderator
