PRAYER CAMPAIGN:  During this time of "campaigns", we would like Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School children and families to sponsor a "Prayer Campaign".  This would involve each family saying a decade of the rosary (one Our Father, ten Hail Marys, one Glory Be) each day at home or on the way to work and school.  During this Month of the Rosary, we are seeking the intercession of Our Lady to end the cycle of hate and killing in Iraq, our own city, and around the world.  Many of us feel helpless in stopping these world tragedies; however, we do have the power of prayer.  Let's do our part!

SPAGHETTI DINNER:  Thank you to Mark and Julie Curry and all the parent volunteers who helped make the PTA Spaghetti Dinner a success!  This is a big job, and we appreciate everyone's help.

SCHOOL PICTURES:  School pictures were taken on Thursday, October 14.  If your child was absent on Thursday, please plan for him to have his picture taken on retake day (Monday, November 22).  Class composites will not be printed until after this date so that all retakes (due to absenteeism or an unacceptable original photograph) can be included in the composite.  Also, all "non-buyers" will receive a package containing a sample "proof" image along with ordering instructions (in the event your child forgot his money on picture day or if you were not willing to commit to buying a package without first seeing the proofs).  These proof orders can be mailed directly to Lifetouch, and all portrait packages printed from these orders will be sent directly to the customer's home.

ENTERTAINMENT 2005 BOOKS:  All books or payment were due to be returned to school last Tuesday, October 12.  There are still a few out.  Please be sure to return these books no later than Monday, October 20 to avoid a penalty.

MAGAZINE DRIVE UPDATE:  Next week is out-of-uniform week for qualifying students.  To qualify, students must have sold at least $100 worth of magazines/products individually OR $150 as a family.   The Limo Lunch is scheduled for next Wednesday, October 20.  Seventh- and eighth-grade students who had sales of at least $250 qualify for this award.  Homeroom teachers will have lists of qualifying students for both the out-of-uniform week and the Limo Lunch.  Major Prize awards (A, B, C, D) will also be distributed on Wednesday, October 20.  Finally, the Sport Radio Coolers are still not in.  We have a list of students who qualified for this award, and we will distribute the coolers as soon as they become available.

MARKET DAY:   November is Pie Month, when we will once again have our pie-selling contest.   Order forms will come home in school packets next week (October 22) and will be due back in the school office by Monday, November 1.   Let family members know about ordering their holiday pies from us!

WEBSITE UPDATE:  You can now go to "School Info", then click on "Staff" or "Auxiliary Service".   Both pages allow you to click on staff member names and get directly to their e-mail.

IMPETIGO:  There have been several reported cases of impetigo in the primary grades.  Impetigo is a condition characterized by blister-like, pus-filled bumps which progress to yellowish crusted, painless sores with irregular outlines.  Itching is common.  It is usually found on exposed skin areas and around the nose and mouth.  Transmission is by direct contact with draining sores.  Hands soiled with drainage from lesions contaminate other items, leading to indirect spread of the condition.  Infected persons are contagious as long as drainage is present and should be excluded until 24 hours after treatment has begun and all sores are dry.  Please be responsible if your child comes down with this or other conditions that can spread quickly through school classrooms.  Thank you.

MONTE CARLO/REVERSE RAFFLE:  The OLSH Men's Club 22nd Annual Monte Carlo Night is scheduled for Saturday, February 5.  For those parents who do not know, this is the major fundraising event that directly benefits the OLSH School Computer Program.  A major part of that event is tied in to the sale of Reverse Raffle tickets.  Each ticket is $25, a minimum of 500 tickets will be sold, and the Grand Prize Winner will receive $2500!  Next week there will be a Reverse Raffle Ticket order form sent home with more information about the event and the ticket sale.  Please help the Men's Club make this upcoming Monte Carlo their most successful yet.  Thank you!

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR:  Our Scholastic Book Fair is coming to school during the first week of November (November 1 through November 7) and will be open during conferences.  The location has been changed to the library this year.  More information to come.

VOLLEYBALL NEWS:  Attention, all girls registered to play volleyball--mark your calendars!  There will be open gym on October 30 and again on November 7.  Parents will be asked to attend "Gym Education" and complete forms while their daughters are attending the open gym.  Specifics will be in the bulletin soon.  Please call Laurie Hoffman (volleyball commissioner) at 733-9380 if you have any questions.

SUBSTITUTE TEACHER RECRUITMENT WORKSHOP:  The Catholic School Office is offering professional development sessions that will help recruit and develop substitute teachers for our Catholic schools.  The one-day workshop will on November 28, 2004 from 8:30 a.m. 'til 3:30 p.m. at Bishop Fenwick High School in Middletown.  If you are a college graduate who may be interested in substitute teaching in our Catholic schools, please go online to register (www.catholiccincinnati.org/schools/cstep_progdates.htm.).
