ACCREDITATION: We have completed the first phase of the accreditation process and will move on to the External Team visit on January 13 and 14, 2005.
TERRA NOVA TESTS: Students in grades 2, 4, 6, and 8 will be taking the Terra Nova/In View tests during the month of October. The test results are used to analyze how well our curriculum meets the needs of student learning. Your child's teacher will let the class know the test schedule.
A good breakfast always gives a child a good start on a test.
MAGAZINE DRIVE UPDATE: Our final total for the 2004 Magazine Drive was $36,743. WAY TO GO! This represents a huge effort by students, parents, and teachers and will amount to about $16,000 in profit for the school. These funds will be used to cover all PTA activities and special projects which will be determined by PTA later in the year. If you have suggestions for projects you'd like to see funded, come to the next PTA meeting on November 17 and share your ideas.
Congratulations to nine homerooms whose students sold over $2000--these homerooms will receive a five-pound Hershey's Bar! Congratulations to the seventh-grade homerooms with nearly $4000 in sales each! And, last but not least, give a big round of applause to the following students who received the $700-level prize: Chris Kessling (4-D); Brian Torbeck (4-T); Nick Payne (7-H); Andrew, Matthew, and Nicholas Pryse (6-G); and Darcie (4-T) and Craig (7-H) Gorsuch.
Please make a note of some important upcoming dates: product delivery--October 6; End-of-Sale Awards Day (Wheel of Fortune, Treasure Chest, Money Machine, and Cash Box)--October 13; and Limo Lunch and Big Prizes (A, B, C, and D)--October 20. Out-of-uniform week will be October 18 for qualifying students. PLEASE NOTE: Students will not receive an out-of-uniform pass; instead, each teacher will have a list of qualifying students. To qualify, an individual must have sales of $100 or more OR family sales of at least $150.
ENTERTAINMENT 2005 BOOKS: The price has been reduced (ONLY $25!), and some new and different restaurants and merchants have been added! Today your youngest child is bringing home one Entertainment Book for you to view. This makes it easy to take the time to look at the book at home to see where you could be saving lots of money. THESE ARE NOT FREE BOOKS! If you would like to keep the book, just place a check (made payable to OLSH) in the original envelope and send it to school no later than Tuesday, October 12. If you choose not to keep the book, place it in the original envelope and return it to school no later than Tuesday, October 12. There is no obligation to buy, and we are not asking the students to sell these books. This is a fundraiser for our school library. Profits will help us purchase more A.R. books and tests for the students, which will give them a larger selection of required reading material. Thank you very much for your support!
THEATER/DRAMA CLUB: The general meeting for Wednesday, October 6 is canceled. We will begin classes for grades 5-8 on October 5 and for grades 1-4 on October 7. Turn in forms to Mrs. O'Brien as soon as possible. Thank you.
HEAD LICE: We have identified several cases of head lice over the past two weeks. Mrs. Joan-Ellen Grattan, R.N., happened to be scheduled to work at OLSH this past Tuesday and did a very thorough job of checking the heads of students suspected of having head lice and then checking all students in classrooms shared by those students. We think it is important to point out that it is a misconception that head lice is a dirty person's affliction; in fact, lice are most attracted to clean hair! A letter was sent home last week to parents of junior-high students; we are again sending that letter home, this time to all families. Please refer to it for complete information on head lice.
LOOKING AHEAD: OLSH's 22nd Annual Spaghetti Dinner will be held on Sunday, October 10. Mark your calendars! If you can lend a hand during any part of the dinner, please contact Mark and Julie Curry at 769-9106. There are many opportunities for you to be a part of this social fundraiser, from set-up to clean-up, serving, and baking desserts. The success of the Spaghetti Dinner depends on you!
PTA SKATING PARTIES: There are two skating parties scheduled for this school year--Tuesday, October 26 and Thursday, March 10. Please mark your calendars and watch for more information as these dates approach.
ONLINE TUTORING: The state of Ohio has received a grant to provide online tutoring for all students in all subjects (except Religion, of course) from 2 p.m. 'til 10 p.m. seven days a week. Students will need Shockwave 8.5, but they can download it if they don't have it. The website is www.knowitnow.org.
YEARBOOK: Volunteers are needed to paste up the 2004-05 Yearbook pages for 1-O, 1-P, 3-P, 5-S, 6-G, 6-R, and 7-H. No experience is necessary, and you need to attend only two meetings (October and May). Call Alison O'Neill at 769-4853 if you're able to help out.
