OUR LADY OF THE SACRED HEART PARENT-TEACHER ORGANIZATION
SPECIAL MEETING - JUNE 27, 2007
DISCUSSION OF LIBRARIAN PROGRAM
INTRODUCTIONS - Everyone introduced themselves. There were 20 people in attendance.
FACILITATOR - Mr. Ray Guye facilitated the meeting.
OPENING PRAYER - The meeting was called to order by Tamara Anderson. A prayer was read by Katie Leary.
HISTORY OF LIBRARY PROGRAM - Tamara reviewed the history of the library program. Two years ago, the librarian position was eliminated due to budget constraints. The librarian was responsible for entering books in the system, entering AR’s in the system, removing old books from the shelves, handling requests from the teachers, managing the students during their library time and training library volunteers.
CURRENT SITUATION - These librarian duties are currently being handled by volunteers. There has been a lack of continuity between the classrooms and the library.
This March, three members of the PTO board attended a fund-raiser seminar at the Cincinnati Zoo. At this seminar, they discovered that St. James (Wyoming) PTO funded a part-time librarian position.
Tamara discussed the idea with Fr. Ron, Mrs. Adelmann, and Mr. Joe Dierkers. On May 17, Fr. Ron and Mr. Dierkers agreed that the parish would support the librarian position and would commit to paying up to 50% of the salary, with PTO providing the additional funds. The librarian position could not exceed 19 hours per week.
On May 24, this information was shared at the regularly scheduled PTO meeting. A majority of the membership voted to support the library program.
For the 2007-2008 school year, PTO could use the Scholastic Book Fair and Entertainment Book sale money (approximately $3000) to support the library program.
DISCUSSION AND ISSUES
Ms. Joanne Fischesser discussed her experience with the librarian positions at the different schools where she was employed. She will be responsible for the hiring of the librarian.
Parish Council and Finance Committee must still provide their approval for the librarian position.
To help PTO in determining the amount of funding for the librarian, Ms. Fischesser advised us to assume that the high end salary for a part-time librarian would be $15,000.
Is there a contract/salary guarantee? Per Ms. Fischesser, all Archdiocese teachers are contracted for one year.
Could SCRIPS money be used to support the librarian position? What portion can be allocated to the library program? Tom Stautberg will discussed with Fr. Ron.
What hours will a librarian be needed? Generally 1 class period (40 minutes?) for each homeroom . Additional hours will be needed for library updates and organization.
What amount of money in the current library account (approximately $4000) can we use for the librarian position this year? Ms. Fischesser said as far as she knew, we could use all of it.
PTO needs to provide Fr. Ron and Mr. Dierkers with an outline on how we (PTO) plan to come up with the money for the librarian position this year (2007-2008 school year). Tamara will develop.
