7th/8th Grade English/Composition:
Seventh graders will continue their study of parts of speech and sentence structures. Composing interesting sentences, paragraphs, and essays will be the thrust of our efforts.
Eighth graders will be getting into more complicated sentence structures to add life and sophistication to their compositions.
7th/8th Grade Literature/Spelling/Vocabulary:
Seventh Grade:
Classroom Reading: The Miracle Worker, a play by William Gibson, will be our class novel. This play tells the extraordinary story of Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan, her emancipator. Although we cannot understand exactly what Helen and Anne went through, we will participate in some activities that will help to better appreciate their struggles.
Independent Reading: This time around, seventh grade students will be reading a mystery. As they read, they are to make note of 10 important events in order to create a timeline for their novel. This will be due Friday, March 5th.
Eighth Grade:
Classroom Reading: Eighth graders are reading The Lightning Thief, by Rick Riordan. From their comments, it seems to be their favorite novel so far! It will be interesting to compare the book to the movie that's about to be released! (Generally, I find no Hollywood special effects can beat the reader's imagination!)
Independent Reading: Students will be choosing a novel in the fantasy/science fiction genre. They well then create a movie poster for their book. Posters are due Wednesday, March 3rd.
Both grades:
Spelling/Vocabulary: Spelling assignments and tests will continue as usual--work due Mondays, tests on Tuesdays. However, in an effort to promote more frequent and indepth study of the vocabulary words, students will be given a longer span of time between the initiation of the unit and the testing day. This will allow the students more time to work with the words in class and to study at home. Continued focus on the etymoloty of words will also expand their vocabulary knowledge and word attack skills.
Other:
Students, many of you need to replenish or replace school supplies. It's your responsibility to bring this to your parent's attention. :)
God Bless,
Mrs. Eggenberger
