7th/8th Grade English/Composition:
Seventh graders will be finishing up our study of parts of speech, and entering into more sophisticated sentence structures. Students will be using their new and mastered skills in compositions, assignments, and homework.
Eighth graders will be honing their grammar and applying it to assignments, compositions, and a contest or two.
7th/8th Grade Literature/Spelling/Vocabulary:
Seventh Grade:
Classroom Reading: Our class novel is The Man Who Was Poe, by Avi. It's a spine-tingler! As always, we will be studying the elements of literature as they apply to this novel and genre.
Independent Reading: Students will be reading a non-fiction book about one of the states in the Union. The culminating activity will incorporate our study of media techniques with a presentation inwhich students must "sell" their state as a tourist destination. Yes,parents, part of their preparation is to identify these specific techniques in print and TV ads! Presentations will take place April14th.
Eighth Grade:
Classroom Reading: Eighth graders have finished with The Lightning Thief--by far, our favorite selection! On to The Secret Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, another work by Avi. This historical fiction book fits our year-long theme of identity.
Independent Reading: Students will be choosing a historical fiction novel for their independent reading also. They will need to prepare a timeline as a book report. All students have a handout as a guideline. These are due April 16th.
In addition: As is tradition, the eighth graders will perform a play in May. This year it will be Cinderella, scheduled for May 18th. This will be a part of their literature study of drama and plays. They will be learning about stage production, vocabulary, and direction, as well as teamwork, critiquing, and timing. (Parents, a brief prayer in the months to come for the "director" would be appreciated! :) )
Both grades:
Spelling/Vocabulary: Spelling assignments and tests will continue as usual--work due Mondays, tests on Tuesdays. However, in an effort to promote more frequent and indepth study of the vocabulary words, students will be given a longer span of time between the initiation of the unit and the testing day. This will allow the students more time to work with the words in class and to study at home. Continued focus on the etymoloty of words will also expand their vocabulary knowledge and word attack skills.
Other:
Students, many of you need to replenish or replace school supplies. It's your responsibility to bring this to your parent's attention. :)
I would like to say at this time that I am impressed with the growth I see in the students. Keep up the good work, and let's end this year on terrific note!!
God Bless,
Mrs. Eggenberger
