Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas celebration, a restful break, and abundant blessings in the New Year! The new year brings review of where we've been and where we're headed academically.  Subject matter will increase in complexity and assignments and responsibilities will be more demanding.  Don't worry, some fun will be mixed in there too!

7th/8th Grade English/Composition:

Seventh graders did well on the archdiocesan writing wamples.  The writing prompt had to do with choices.  Since we had just finished reading The Giver, this prompt coordinated nicely with our recent classroom discussions!  Many students employed the five-paragraph-essay format for this composition.  Seventh graders will continue their study of parts of speech.  They will work on improving their writing skills as well.

Eighth graders have weathered their intense prepartation for the high school entrance exam.  We will continue to study parts of speech and delve into more complex sentence structures.  This knowledge will be applied to their writing assignments.

7th/8th Grade Literature/Spelling/Vocabulary:

Seventh Grade:

Classroom Reading:  As mentioned above, the seveth grade has finished reading The Giver, by Lois Lowry.  Next we will be reading The Miracle Worker, a play written by William Gibson.  This play tells the extraordinary story of Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan, her emancipator.

Independent Reading:  Seventh grader students will be reading a biography or autobiography, as always, with teacher approval.  The project that goes with this genre is a mobile displaying five important events in that person's life.  More details will be forthcoming.  This project will be due Thursday, Jan. 28th.

Eighth Grade:

Classroom Reading:  Eighth graders will begin the new year with one of my favorite novels, The Lightning Thief, by Rick Riordan.  If the students don't know much about Greek mythology, they will by the time we finish reading!

Independent Reading:  The next genre for independent reading is mystery.  As always, students must show me their choice for approval.  When finished, students will be expected to complete a cause and effect chart pertaining to their novel.  More details will be announced when school resumes in January.  This project will be due Tuesday, Jan. 26.

Both grades:

Spelling/Vocabulary: Assignments for spelling and vocabulary were intermittent in December due to the many and varied activites and changes to the schedule.  When school resumes in January, so will the regularity of these assignments.

Spelling:  work due Mondays, tests Tuesdays

Vocabulary:  work due Thursdays (7th)/Wednesdays (8th), tests Fridays

To enhance work attack skills, we will take a closer look at the etymology (history and meanings of roots, prefixes, and suffixes) of the words being studied.  This will be of immense help with everything they read!

Students, many of you need to replenish or replace school supplies.  It's your responsibility to bring this to your parent's attention.  :)

God Bless,

Mrs. Eggenberger
